To think that the vast majority of people are self centred?

I have had a very difficult time lately with various things and it has really dawned on me just how self centred most people I know are.

In my experience, most people just want to talk about themselves, don't listen to others, and run a mile if they have to give even a miniscule amount of sympathy or support to anyone.

So many people that I speak to do things such as talk incessantly about themselves and then if someone else speaks they glaze over, or start fiddling with their phone. So rude!

AIBU to think most people are like this?

Just to add that people will want to speak to someone amusing, witty with funny stories as it cheers them up, they won't want to speak to someone who has sad tales only.

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.". Quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, think it's very apt.

You say you're having a difficult time ATM and so you wish people would listen to you. Maybe these people are having their own difficulties and are wishing that you would listen to them?

There are definitely some people who are more in to giving monologues about themselves and their issues than having a conversation where you take it in turns to speak. They tend to avoid pauses in conversations in case you dare to put your point of view. I tend to avoid having these people as friends.
They're the people who start talking the moment they see you and don't stop for about 10 minutes. They're just as bad on the phone.
I'm not sure how some people develop so little self awareness.
If you have lots of friends like that you're not fussy enough.
