WIBU to have kicked these dogs?

We're on holiday and walked to the (very quiet, dog friendly) beach. DP realised we'd forgotten DD's bucket and spade so he walked back to the caravan with DS in the sling. Me, DD and Ddog walked onto the beach with Ddog on her lead (I wasn't going to let her off till we had got way further down to a clear part of the beach). There was a group of adults with a few dogs to our right so we walked the other way.

All of a sudden one of these dogs (turns out there were 3) ran at us barking and snarling and started to try to bite poor soft friendly lump Ddog. Two other dogs from the same group, again not on lead and again barking and snarling, followed and joined in attacking Ddog. DD got knocked over and was screaming.

A protective red mist kicked in. I kicked the dogs. Hard. Repeatedly until I managed to extricate Ddog and DD and the stupid feckless owner who fucking SAUNTERED over came and got them. I then gave him an earful and a half.

WIBU?

Yes it's a dog friendly beach but surely that only applies to dogs who can behave off the lead and who won't attack other (well behaved) dogs?

I Love dogs but YANBU I wouldn't have just kicked the bloody dogs neither.

Thank God your LO wasn't hurt and that your Dog is okay.

Honestly I would have called the Police, those idiots are the sort that give all Dog owners a bad name.

Poor dog and dd :( yaDnbu! I'd have stamped on their heads (and arsehole 'owner's) if I thought my Ddog and child were in danger. Mum rage is a dangerous thing to deal with, especially if you're the one on the recieving end! In fact it's so dangerous that my DM punched a swan (or goose) in the face for biting my toe!! I was only a toddler though and usually DMs Practically a tree hugger Grin

Yanbu

DH once propelled one across a beach that was attacking our small dog. Owner somehow decided this was our fault. I thought dh might propel owner as well tbh.

Keep an eye on ddog, ours never really recovered and became very dog anxious after that. He didn't like other dogs at all and never really tolerated any until the day he died.

Don't feel a moments guilt, id have done exactly the same as you.

Our spaniel was attacked last summer by a staffy, the owner shouted across the field at me "she doesn't like other dogs" as her dog had ours in it's fucking mouth. I got the dog by it's neck, picked it up and our dog was still in it's bloody mouth, vile thing, I punched it in the side of it's head, it dropped ours and I booted it hard as I could up it's arse. The owner was going bezerk watching me do it, I sent DH home with the dog and DCs, followed her back to her house and phoned the police on my way, all the time she was going mental at me. Turns out it wasn't the first time she'd been in trouble for the dog and it ended up being destroyed. I don't feel a moment's remorse. Dogs like that need to either be muzzled permanently or destroyed. No middle ground.

You don't dick about when it comes to protecting your DCs and your pets. The owner was an utter dick and you were completely right.

YANBU. Your poor dog and DD.

I honestly don't think you could have done anything different that would have stopped the dogs from attacking, your dog would have ended up in a right mess.

Snapes Shock

Good for you!

DancingDinosaur · 05/07/2015 23:18

It doesn't sound as though you had a choice op. I would have done the same. I wouldn't want to, but if my child and dog are at risk, then there is no choice.

Backforthis · 05/07/2015 23:19

I just woke DH up laughing at your mother punching a swan MeowImACatfish. I think I need to make a donation to the RSPB as penance Blush

BettyCatKitten · 05/07/2015 23:19

Snapes I don't blame you.

Mil was in a park with her small dog when another dog came for him. Mil picked her dog up to protect it and kicked at aggressive dog, some teens came to her rescue and eventually the owner got the dog under control. Poor mil rang us in shock and tears, she was still shaking.

Blimey. Op YWNBU! I would do the same in a heartbeat. I hate badly behaved dogs and ignorant owners. When my old boy was a pup I had to hoist him above my head when two enormous collies tried to have a go at him. They were off lead so I thought we'd be ok. Thank god Barney was on a lead or God knows what could have happened. We met one of them again a few months later, both passed each other, both on lead, when the collie launched itself at us and sank it's teeth into Barney's back leg. He seemed ok but the next day I discovered the wound. Unfortunately it was Christmas Day and the vets were shut. Had to wait until the next day. Poor old boy.

Ah, back mermaid I talked to Dm this morning, it was definitley a goose. Not as exciting as a swan.. But apparently my grandad just stood and stared then walked off with me in the buggy and pretended not to know the crazy goose-ist woman following him Blush

WendyTorrance · 07/07/2015 16:54

I've read this thread with interest as a first-time dog owner. My dog is 16 months old and a big 44kg lump of a dog. Daft as a brush too.

Because of his size I exercise him off lead only in a remote area of the park and then put him back on his lead when we wander around. People are wary of him.

Without fail, whenever we walk past the kids play area/cafe part of the park, a small dog will fly out of nowhere and have a go at my dog who either looks worried or bemused. They're vicious little buggers with some idiot owner looking on. I've often wondered how to handle it if a dog bites him and considered wellying the offending dog. I don't understand why these owners think that just because their dog is small it's ok to be off lead. If mine carried on like that the police would be called.

TheChandler · 07/07/2015 17:46

YANBU OP. In fact you are probably doing the dogs and other people a favour. I was bitten by a dog once, one which was well known for attacking other dogs, and if someone had kicked it hard in the past, it might have learned a lesson. I only wish I had kicked it but being bitten by a dog is actually pretty terrifying and I froze.
