I spose there has to be a cut off somewhere, and I spose it helps that I dont earn £30,000,
no doubt if it was just in the bracket I might feel a bit peeved.

usual Yes, that happened a fair bit. Whole streets where l'm from.

usualsuspect333 · 05/07/2015 17:19

If people did move out, there would still be people moaning that benefit scroungers got 4 bedroomed free houses.

TTWK · 05/07/2015 17:24

The average worldwide income is £11,300. But remember that no one is more that £11,300 worse off than this, but lots of people earn millions.
The median worldwide income is about £925. That's right....£925 a year, well under £100/month.

So those people complaining that £30K is rich, in worldwide terms £1K a year is more than most people earn. So maybe those on £12K a year should stop moaning, as you're all loaded.

But we're talking about the UK, not the world, and in the UK in 2015, £30K/year is not rich, and not even close to being a high earner. It doesn't matter is it's in the top 30%, or more than double NMW, it still doesn't make you a high earner.

To suggest otherwise is delusional.

Market rent for our property would be £650 - £700 a month, we'd be fucked as the wife is term time only so some months her take home is less than £600.

Wheretheresawill1 · 05/07/2015 17:49

If that's the case I want the standard of my home to match those at market rent- dishwasher please... Replace my 25 yr old not fit for purpose kitchen please... It works both ways

Wheretheresawill1 · 05/07/2015 17:53

It makes no sense to kick out the people who are working- I will be 2k over. I might decide to drop some hours now. I will be paying the same to rent a 1 bed ha flat as my brother pays for his 300k semi detached home- all because I got unwell and lost my career. I go to work even though I'm not always 100% well yet people who sit on their arse will not be affected by this. So disappointed in the Tories if this is true.

Ledare · 05/07/2015 18:07

Why would you be disappointed in them? Did you honestly think that they really give a shit about working people like you, or did you vote for them just to punish the people you see as scroungers?

Most people are scroungers to this lot. Ironically, as they didn't work for their millions.

Wheretheresawill1 · 05/07/2015 18:10

I'm disappointed because my family did well under the Tory government- by working hard we got reward. There's a difference between someone who works and someone who is scrounging lying in bed all day. I had hoped the Tory government may recognise that

Ledare · 05/07/2015 18:14

Mine did too. I'm a carer, but my son isn't in a wheelchair so I'm just a dosser as far as my neighbours can tell, and to the government too. And as for how they see my son... Sad

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 05/07/2015 18:16

If more private rents were longer term and not all short lets, maybe people would be more willing to privately rent.

I would. I live in a council house in the NE. The average rate round here is another couple hundred a month. If there was household earnings over £30K in my house (which there isn't ATM - Im 15K, DH is SAHD getting a carer's allowance for DS who has Autism and therefore DLA) I could afford it, but I can see how others can't. The only reason why I would stay would be the security. Part of me would love to rent privately, but I dont fancy the worry about finding the money to move every year.

Problem with this country is that buying your own home is seen as the be all and end all. Its all about getting on the property ladder and owning. In other countries there is a better system for renting with long term tenancies. Why cant it be like that here? Id certainly consider leaving my council home for another family to have, but as I have security Id be mad to. If the government would see that buying a house isn't always the best thing to do then maybe they would look to doing something about the private rental market.

Social Cleansing then MoreMeta ? Because YOU and YOUR family moved out everyone should ? We do not have the "Right"? Well my elderly Nan and Grandparents are here , in London, where they and my parents and I were born and bred . and staying !

DFO , GF

Viviennemary · 05/07/2015 22:01

People live where they can afford. Of course it's their choice where they live. But I don't think they can expect the rest of the country to carry on subsidising inflated rents in the South. It's just pushing up rents higher and higher and higher and really isn't helping anybody but buy to let landlords.

keepitsimple0 · 05/07/2015 22:08

No one should have a right to live in social housing on benefits in the most expensive part of the UK when people who do work in essential services on not very high pay are commuting for hours (eg emergency service workers, medical workers). My sister has lived in London for 25 years, lived in social housing had two children never worked other than minimal amounts cash in hand, exploited right to buy and basically worked the system and made £250k tax free. She had no connection to London just wanted to live there.

not going to popular here. some people think a good use of public money is supporting people to live in Chelsea. of course, those funds could be used for the NHS, education, universities, transport etc.

it's hard for people to understand that when they have to move countries to find work. if you can support yourself, then fine. but the whole country should support people in the most expensive part of the EU?

TTWK · 05/07/2015 22:13

That's great. I live in London too. So long as they can afford to fund it themselves, then good luck to them. But whilst I expect my taxes to be used to help put a roof over the heads of those who can't afford a roof, I don't expect that roof to be in an expensive location of the person's choosing.

southeastastra · 05/07/2015 22:16

london is having all the life sucked out of it.

keepitsimple0 · 05/07/2015 22:18

london is having life sucked out of it. but we need a better solution than endless housing benefit.

Edenviolet · 05/07/2015 22:21

Is it only earnings that are taken into account or earnings and benefits ?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 05/07/2015 22:26

a better solution than housing benefit is to build more social housing - the average HB payment to those in private accomodation is £110pw whereas the average HB payment to those in social housing is £70pw.

More social housing = lower housing benefit :)

half of london it sold as investment, just build affordable housing that people don't need benefit for.

an even better solution is more social housing, more private housing and better protection for private tenants.
