To think there is no way to completely stop nuisance calls?

We got a landline a while ago, after seven years of just having a mobile. I have yet to give the number to anyone except my Mum, yet already I am getting calls about life assurance, PPI etc. We selected to be ex directory, and are on the telephone preference service. I know my in-laws get several nuisance calls a day and they have always had the pref service too. Is there anything I can do? Thanks!

I am tps registered, ex directory and opted out of the edited electoral roll. I always try and avoid adding a phone number to any form I fill in and always tick the don't call me, don't pass on my details boxes. I get very very few calls. If they do call I ask for company name then tell them I am tps registered and will report them. They haven't called back.

We're with the TPS, but it doesn't stop the deluge of calls from India asking us about accidents. DH and I just wind the call centre monkeys up now. Example:

  • Hello, ma'am, I am calling about the accident you had.
  • Oh, what accident was this?
  • We have information that you had an accident in the past three years.
  • Oh yeah, what was the date and what were the circumstances?

(Cue blustering from the caller)

  • Since you know so much about it, you can surely tell me the details of the accident you say you know that I had?
  • We cannot reveal that information to you, ma'am.
  • Why not?
  • We are under the child protection act. [I HAVE NOT MADE THIS UP].
  • That's nonsense. Take this number off your database at once and never call this number again.
  • Ma'am, I am just calling about your car accident.

I might have to look into call guardian as I'm getting pissed off with the Microsoft scam calls.

I did tell the last one that he'd called the police control room and that Interpol were tracing the call. Am hoping that results in my number being removed from their database.Grin

We actually bought new phones as I was so utterly pissed off by the amount of Indian call centres phoning me. They wouldn't even ask for me half the time, they'd ask for the previous owner. I had one argue with me once that I really was the previous owner. We have blocked international calls now and we hardly get bothered by them at all. It absolutely warms the cockles of my heart to think of them dialling our number and just getting a dead tone. It's making me smile right now just thinking about it.

We can block numbers too. Some solar power company rang the other day. She tried to arrange for someone to come and visit me but I said sorry, we're not interested at the moment. I wasn't rude. She just put the phone down on me. I took great delight in blocking the number. Try that again you cheeky cow.

Another happy TrueCall customer here. You can set it up with a PIN for callers, or ask callers to announce themselves. You can also have different settings for mobile numbers, international numbers and they can be handled differently depending on whether it's day or night, and you can specify what is day/night to you.
