Elderly dog over-heating in hot weather - HELP

sadwidow28 · 02/07/2015 00:01

My 16 year old Border Collie is hardly able to move in this hot weather. He doesn't like water so I can't give him a cooling bath.

He is panting 24 hours a day. He had a full check-up in March - and all okay. (Heart and kidneys)

I am wetting towels to keep him cool - but he hates wet towels on his back.

I can't find the MN area to speak about dogs.

Please can anyone help?

My gsd normally doesn't like being bathed etc but yesterday I watered her down with a watering can of cold water...she actually seemed to like it, and then had a run around the garden after pointless

MrsRossPoldark · 02/07/2015 07:51

I have a wire haired fox terrier (triple coat!) - I dress him in a child's wet tshirt. He hates having it put on but once he realises that he feels cooler, he doesn't mind. You can then re-wet the tshirt when you need to.

OttiliaVonBCup · 02/07/2015 07:54

I let my boy lay on the stones in the shade with a wet towel under his tummy to cool him down.

I don't use ice cubes because they upset his tummy.

PumpkinsMummy · 02/07/2015 08:14

MrsRossPoldark that's a genius idea, I am pinching this for my pug who will not tolerate any of my (frankly ingenious) methods of trying to keep her cool. She has not yet discovered how to undress herself though!

OP, you can freeze hot water bottles and cover them in a blanket and pop in his bed for night time if he will tolerate something in his bed. (Princess pea pug will not).

gobbynorthernbird · 02/07/2015 09:36

I 'shower' our 10yo collie cross with a watering can. She hates it but it works.

HagOtheNorth · 02/07/2015 09:41

I regularly meet someone on walks with an elderly Newfoundland. She has a paddling pool, and her dog stands in it, or lies in it for ages. Apparently, the fastest way to cool down her dog is for all four paws to be in cool water.

Mrsjayy · 02/07/2015 09:58

My dog lies in the hall on hot days i have flooring though last year i wet towels for him but he loves rolling in wet towels its horrible for them. Btw whats a fuminate i have a collie cross with a double coat sounds like something i should have

littlefrenchonion · 02/07/2015 10:11

Clip him - he's old, presumably you don't walk in when the weather is really harsh anymore because of it, so losing any insulation won't be an issue.

Ask the groomer to shave his belly bald - you won't really see it when he is stood up but it'll give him a large surface area to lose a bit of heat from.

Other than that - wet towels, wet feet, indoors at all times, put some bottles of water in the freezer for him to lie against of he choses. Maybe fill a Tupperware with water and a few dog biscuits and freeze that too to give him something to lick?

You could even give him a cool bath.

I love the oldies Smile

VacantExpression · 02/07/2015 10:52

We've done wet towels here on tiled floor to lay on (was still nice and cool and damp this morning) and "lollies"- few treats and kibble frozen in v dilute stock in Tupperware worked a treat yesterday.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 02/07/2015 10:58

My border collie is a young thing but we take her for walks with a water pistol on hot days.
We spray it at her and she snaps at the water spray and chases it, it gets on her tongue and wets her coat so she can run around without overheating.

It makes us look quite mean though!

Dawndonnaagain · 02/07/2015 12:40

Don't put ice cubes in his water! It can cause stomach torsion which is when their stomach twists.
It really doesn't. Ice cubes for dogs are fine.

Dawndonnaagain · 02/07/2015 12:48

Ice cubes for dogs are good in hot weather

AnulTheMagnificent · 02/07/2015 13:21

I have the same problem with my cat. I use ice blocks (the ones for lunch boxes/cooler bags) under his bed, and direct a fan on him from above and keep him out of hot rooms/sun. I also use frozen bottles of water alongside him, if you can use the big bottles and direct a fan towards them the air will be cooler as it reaches him.

Melonfool · 02/07/2015 13:32

We use water spray for disciplining so can't use it for cooling.

I think freezer blocks in the bed, wet towels over and under them, paddling pool in garden, walks after dark. Fan over a bowl of water.

We don't have our own dog but we foster and look after other people's dogs, we have two this week. Luckily they both like water so have been having hose pipe sprays outside.

rumbleinthrjungle · 02/07/2015 17:56

Wet kids t shirt. Damp it down, put it on over head and front legs. It's light and once it's on mine forgets about where towels she hates. She sleeps with hers on damp as she's been miserably hot the last couple of nights.

Thank you once again to everyone who has offered suggestions for my elderly dog - to help him cope in this heat.

He is still panting if he is indoors (with windows and door open) but it stops when I put him on a towel over ice cubes, or a towel that has just come out of the freezer (thank you for that suggestion Rainbunny ). He is now barking when he sees 'his' blue towels, and runs on the decking to show me where he wants it.

Thanks also to Dawndonnaagain I have discovered that the dog doesn't mind a 'mist spray' of cool water on his back. He was abused and controlled with a water hose-pipe before he came to me, so he won't go in water and it took me 2 years to get him to accept bath-time without him thinking he was being punished. He may be old, but he has figured out that his mist-spray is kept in the fridge and he stands looking at the door to signal to me that he needs to be 'misted' again.

minesapintofwine I don't clip this dog - he is a short-haired BC, but the double coat is a problem in this heat. I know they are not supposed to be furminated too often (about once a week) but the heat is making the double-coated dogs shed far more. I am having to hoover my lounge twice a day to deal with the hair shedding.

MrsRossPoldark I did try the wet t-shirt, but his arthritis suddenly improved and he bounced away up the decking Grin I think the look on his face said, "I may be old but I still have my dignity and I am not wearing a girl's t-shirt" Sad

HagOtheNorth My dog won't go near water because of water abuse before I adopted him. When I take him to the beach, he thinks that the little ripples of waves are coming to get him on his ankles! Having said that, he has swum in the sea twice! (1) To round up 3 boys who were visiting from Germany and staying with us. The boys didn't understand the ledges we have on NW coast and they over-stepped. He swam out and did the Border Collie 'round up' whilst he got the boys back onto the beach. (2) I took my brother to the sea for one last time before he died. My dog swam after him when he started to struggle.

(I am a proficient life-guard and was watching both times but my dog didn't wait to see if anyone else was going to the rescue - he faced his terror to save his humans.)

littlefrenchonion He is only walked in early morning (6am) and late evening (7pm) in this weather. He is allowed to sit on the shaded decking during the day - but no walks. He would collapse with the heat. He doesn't have fur on his belly because he is a short-haired BC. But furminating was the way to go the other night.

He already had one fan blowing on his big dog bed - now I've put 2 more throughout the home.

For those who have dogs with double and triple coats, this is the furminator demo video:

I brush my dog every day - but every week he is furminated.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS SUGGESTED HELP FOR MY DOG. I did feel alone and quite useless when I posted. I know I have to lose him one day fairly soon, but I always want to do the very best for him because I have been privileged to have him in my life since he was 6 years old, and to get him to 16 years old is such an honour - and a testamant to the friendship we have had for the last 10 years.

Aw, your stories of him helping his human pack made me cry. I love Border Collies, they're so empathetic and intelligent.

LeoandBoosmum · 04/07/2015 23:42

You could try one of these? This is a really great brand (friend's two dogs have their coats). Follow the guidelines for the best fit for your dog.
