To be pissed off that our neighbour is mowing the lawn right now at 9pm?

Kids have just been woken up, he started about 15mins ago, currently doing hos section of the communal green space outside, I'm guessing he's then going to move on to his front and back gardens. It's a petrol one too so effing noisy!

He's retired. All I have heard on the news all day is warnings for elderly people to stay out of the heat. He may have felt he couldn't go out until then, and the hot weather is predicted to last.

It's only once and if otherwise he's a good neighbour it's a minor annoyance not worth causing a fuss over.

Mintyy · 01/07/2015 21:37

9pm is definitely unreasonable! Come on all you naysayers. Of course it is.

AnyoneForTennis · 01/07/2015 21:37

Well it gets cooler up mountains. Good day for it

Corygal · 01/07/2015 21:37

It's fine. No doubt he has to put up with other people's shrieking kids through the summer, which is a lot worse.

Wideopenspace · 01/07/2015 21:38

Scarlett 7.30?

That is very early. And how are you meant to know if there are young children living nearby? (I mean, I do, but that's because there is one in the same house Grin)

And people don't break if there is some noise.

clam · 01/07/2015 21:38

Maybe the pensioner was trying to have a nap earlier on today when your kids were running around outside squealing? He might have been pissed off with you too.
Everyone has different priorities in life.

Bonfire is awful. Think illegal too.

Mowing the lawn. Probably when my kids were little it would have pissed me off but then kids need to
Learn bed means bed and get on.

You can't expect the rest of the world to stop at toddlers bed time.

9 though would be a cut off point for me.

IUseAnyName · 01/07/2015 21:42

Clam my kids were in school/nursery. No one home till 6, they played in garden for half hr. No noise making children today.... Even so, is it unreasonable for my kids to enjoy the sunshine in the middle of the day if I have a retired person next door?

SoupDragon · 01/07/2015 21:43

Garden bonfires aren't illegal under normal circumstances.

WayneRooneysHair · 01/07/2015 21:43

You do realise that doing the lawn in 30+ degrees is insane, particularly if it's a pensioner? I don't blame him for doing it when it is cooler.

WayneRooneysHair · 01/07/2015 21:44

And yeah, WTF at bonfires being illegal?

SuchSweetSorrow · 01/07/2015 21:44

We did ours at 8pm yesterday. However, we have the only children on the street (they weren't bothered by it at all!), we wouldn't have done it otherwise

Wideopenspace · 01/07/2015 21:44

If it's not UR for your kids to enjoy the sunshine in the middle of the day, when Mr Pensioner is having a lovely afternoon nap, it's not UR for him to mow the lawn now.

paulajcomp · 01/07/2015 21:44

It wouldnt have crossed my mind that this was unreasonable. If its light enough to cut the lawn, its a reasonable time to cut it I would have thought. Well maybe not at 4.00am, but in the evening surely? We used to wait until Ds was in bed before we cut it otherwise he got in the way and was a danger.

Postchildrenpregranny · 01/07/2015 21:45

I'd be more annoyed if he did it at 7.30 am but then I'm retired too.I did ours this morning (because it was trying to thunder) but it was uncomfortably hot.So as one -off yes YABU .But maybe if he makes a habit if it I'd point out that you do have young kids .Though to be honest I never tried to get mine to sleep early in extreme heat .Just made them
lie quietly and read

Blu · 01/07/2015 21:45

I don't really think you can complain about noise until 10pm.

IUseAnyName · 01/07/2015 21:45

He's done the front, he's on to the back now. Kids back in bed thankfully! But now I have to wait to go to bed for him to finish.... 6am start to go to work and up the same mountain, which only drops in temperature marginally, esp in the warmer months.

SoupDragon · 01/07/2015 21:46

Anyway, how long does it take to mow a lawn? Not long. It's not as if he's doing it every night for hours and hours.

minibmw2010 · 01/07/2015 21:47

Mowing can wait till a weekend !!

SoupDragon · 01/07/2015 21:47

Why do you need to wait to go to bed? Confused

ScrambledEggAndToast · 01/07/2015 21:47

Is he doing it naked?

Then I'd be annoyed. (Unless he was fit)

Otherwise YABU because 9pm isn't that late really, especially during the summer when it's light and people generally stay up later.

Postchildrenpregranny · 01/07/2015 21:47

PS I love to hear children playing in the gardens around us .Next door neighbours granddaughter splashing in paddling pool this afternoon -took me back

Cheby · 01/07/2015 21:48

It's just a lawnmower, they're not exactly eat splitting and it's a constant drone type noise so easy for kids to sleep through (certainly no louder from inside than running a fan in your bedroom which presumably the majority of the country are doing right now).

DrFoxtrot · 01/07/2015 21:50

OP I don't think YABU, I have thought about doing my lawn in the evenings before but would always do it before 7pm. Even though some kids are playing at that time etc, I feel that the lawnmower is too noisy and disturbing for the neighbours.
