Son not wanting a story

Ok it was my sons bedtime, i offered to read him a terry Pratchett story ( who he loves) so i was offering a late night, and he refused.
He hardly ever lets me read to him now.

AIBU unreasonable to cry?

He is almost 9

I just went in, and he quickly hid something and pretended to be asleep, when told i just heard him hide something he cant pretend to be asleep.

"I am listening to stories" "show me!" He was watching minecraft videos on his DS. Now not crying but swearing.

Oh come on, bedtime needs to be calm and restful, not all full of melodrama. Couldn't you just calmly take the device away and say "You know it's not time for screens at night- let's have a story and settle down"?

Aw the day my DS tells me he doesn't want a story any more my heart will break, YANBU!

But in all seriousness I do think perhaps banning screens at bed time would be a good idea, surely the stimulation from watching games or the like would keep them up? I don't know...I was always told as a child I could read in bed to get to sleep, tablets/DS/laptops etc weren't around as much in the 90's (I certainly never had one!!) and I didn't have a TV in my room, so now I can get to sleep reading one or two pages of a book! Something I want to encourage in my son. I've never suffered with insomnia or sleeping issues.

We always make sure all devices are downstairs and no where near bedrooms! Never used after bath/shower as no access to them. DS (similar age) wouldn't want us to read to him either - prefers to read to himself.

There has been no drama that he has seen, i offered to read to him, he said no thanks and ran upstairs, well now i know why.

I did just calmly take the device away, but he is on the top bunk, so i needed him to give it to me as i couldn't reach it. And he could have been listening to stories like he told me he was, which i would have been perfectly happy with.

He knows all about the white light disrupting sleep, nothing needed saying.

He knows he was being naughty, which was why i heard the hurried secret hiding of stuff as i walked in, haven't i already said that bit ( on my ipad so can't check before posting this.)

Aw Yanbu! Mine is just 3 and would never turn down a story. In fact his catchphrase at bedtime is 'can you give me some lovely thoughts?' Ie a nice story to give him nice dreams.

However tonight he was messing and I ended up threatening to get cross if he didn't lay down which made me feel guilty.

I don't think you would be unreasonable to ban the DS at bedtime, if he didn't have it he's probably be grateful of a story!

YANBU. dd is 12 and I haven't read her a story at bedtime for ages. I miss it. Tonight she wanted me to help her practise for a test at school tomorrow, so she came into my bed and I tested her with stuff from her revision book. Not nearly as good as a story, but it was nice to have that time together.

btw, I think the hiding electronics when they hear footsteps is pretty common. dd has never been allowed gadgets in her room at night, but I've caught her out loads of times when she's sneaked things in that I thought were safely downstairs.
