To not want my dd to stay in her PE kit all day?

Dd is 8, Year 3. They have PE once a week on a Thursday. The arrangement is that the PE kit is kept at home, they wear it to school on Thursday and go home still wearing it. PE is the penultimate lesson of the day, then they have one more lesson then home (although dd stays for Art club after school so I don't collect her till 5pm).

Apparently there 'isn't enough time' for them to change. I don't really like the idea of them staying in the same clothes all day especially when the weather's warm. They get hot and sticky during the day and then have to wear the same clothes for PE and then keep them on for another couple of hours (in dd's case).

Is this the norm in primary schools these days? AIBU?

Do you want lesson time spent on teaching, or getting changed?

For little ones, dressing/undressing skills are hugely important. Yes, it's the parents' job to teach this but practice at getting changed reasonably quickly is important.

I suppose it just bugs me that everything is done for speed or convenience these days and academic learning is the main focus even for little ones.

Good point about the washing though!

No of course it's not a big issue and I'm not THAT bothered, I just wanted some views.

It seems that the answer to small children taking too long to get changed is = don't get changed. Couldn't it be = more practice?

I have to say I much prefer my dcs to be in PE kit all day in summer than in winter. Imagine being in short and a tshirt all day in the middle of winter? And then expecting to be outside on the playgroup?
Now that would bother me.

MamanOfThree · 25/06/2015 21:10

More oractice should be done at home though...

BreadmakerFan · 25/06/2015 21:42

Ihatemytoes- why don't you tell your child to bring their kit home to Wash?

BreadmakerFan · 25/06/2015 21:44

So many parents who moan about smelly kits but don't think to get their child to bring them home more regularly than half termly.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 25/06/2015 21:45

Wouldn't bother me: they're not doing a cardio workout in PE are they? Saves a days uniform to wash.

cariadlet · 25/06/2015 21:46

Imagine being in short and a tshirt all day in the middle of winter?

Our PE kit is shorts or joggers. We have the shorts for indoor PE and outdoors in the summer. We really encourage children to bring joggers in the winter but only the minority do - and the others get freezing even if we only go outside for 15 minutes because of the cold.
If they were in PE kits all day then maybe they'd all come in joggers and we'd stay out for longer.

Dancergirl · 25/06/2015 21:49

Just out of interest, how do you know what your dc do in PE? At dd's school they have a specialist PE teacher and I assumed they were being worked hard!

Think its preferable in primary to do it that way. can't see any problem. would be suprised to have any issue re sweat at 8 yrs tbh.

MasterchefIwish · 25/06/2015 21:50

Penultimate lesson, fine to me even if she stays later. Pack her some baby wipes and antiperspirant. You may find she'll need them without the PE as it gets hotter.

switswoo81 · 25/06/2015 21:50

I'm in Ireland and have never heard of a school where children change for p.e. Ours wear a tracksuit bottoms and hoody all day twice a week. Or if uniforms are dirty/torn, or a school trip they wear the school tracksuit.
Never had a problem with stinky children.

treaclesoda · 25/06/2015 21:52

I have no idea what my DD does in PE. I don't even know how many days a week she does it. What happens at school stays at school...

RobotLover68 · 25/06/2015 21:54

can I give the opposing view - I'm a sports coach - last year, I was contracted to give a class of year 3s - 6 x 1 hour lessons in my specialist sport - I carefully plan the lessons to cover everything I need to so that we can move on the next week

one week they took so long to get changed that I ended up having them for 25 minutes - I barely scratched the surface of what I needed to get done - then they had to go 10 minutes before the scheduled end and get changed back into the uniform - I think it's a sensible approach by the school - YABU

Denimwithdenim00 · 25/06/2015 22:00

I am pleasantly surprised school are so sensible.

lljkk · 25/06/2015 22:03

yabu

Ihatemytoes · 25/06/2015 22:10

They weren't allowed to bring their kit home in term time.

TwoTribes · 25/06/2015 22:14

But isn't she doing it anyway, just doing it at home rather than in the classroom?

It's a few hours and she's not a "little one" aged 8.

manicinsomniac · 25/06/2015 22:27

YABU

If I were you my issue would be with them doing games only once a week!! That's crazy.

Seriouslyffs · 25/06/2015 22:28

It's very sensible for primary achool children. They did it at one of my dcs' primary schools and, even better, the uniform at another one was suitable for sports. Brilliant!

SevenEleven · 25/06/2015 22:32

Our school brought this in a couple of years ago. 2 days per week they go in in their pe kit for pe days. Winter is a school logo hoody, T-shirt and joggers, summer is t-shirt and shorts. I think it is great as less kit goes missing, less time wasted on changing, and we only need 3 days worth of proper school uniform.

whois · 25/06/2015 22:35

I bet she gets her normal uniform all hot and sticky at break and lunch just as badly as the PE kit gets during PE.

Of all the things to worry about, this is not one of them. Life is too short.

whois · 25/06/2015 22:37

I def used to run around for far longer and for far harder playing tag at break and lunch than we ever did during PE which was all 'stop and am start' 'watch this' and 'practice this skill'
