Are you a saver or a spender? Are you good with money or living from one pay day to the next?

I'm a bit rubbish with finances while DH is very good.

Im a spender, you cant take it with you Grin

YaTalkinToMe · 25/06/2015 19:23

I am amazing with money now (was shit previously), I think money management is one of my best skills.
I am a saver/spender and like to always have something in back up.
I hate debt.

NinkyNonkers · 25/06/2015 19:34

Used to be awful... credit card debt etc. I grew up with a very comfortable lifestyle and went on spending to match. I had a highish salary in my twenties and just spent! Now I am better, I huge money around and manage the finances quite well. We are coming out of a tight time with home moves,me being off for a few years etc but always stayed in the black, even though it was close by the end of the month! We bought a house smaller than we could have done and are putting any extra towards clearing the mortgage, which whilst it isn't massive compared to many, is still there. We have one car which again, isn't the smallest but much needed and bought for cash, a caravan for holidays etc. Dh barely spends anything day to day, I try to be careful.

AyeAmarok · 25/06/2015 19:46

Always save, and if you get a pay rise, save the extra. Always have a buffer and don't live in a way that your finances are stretched to the limit.

And don't buy anything that you can't afford to buy outright without going into debt (mortgage excepted, and probably a car).

HerrenaHarridan · 25/06/2015 19:50

I used to be awful, but I think I've finally got a grip.

I'm also better off.

I think for many of is there is a correlation between being poor and spending unwisely, if you don't know if there will still be money there at the end of the week you tend to buy x while you've still got the money etc
Whereas once you get to a point that you actually have cushion you can tell yourself you could have it any time so it can wait ifysiw

That's so true. If you go shopping with no money you see everything you want, but if you go with plenty you can never find anything you might want to buy!

CallMeExhausted · 25/06/2015 19:56

In my head I am good with money, but we still never have enough.

DD's disability brings with it a load of extra expenses, so we are often pretty skint at the end of the month.

With that said, we have put away a significant amount into the education savings for DS and a trust fund for DD. That part is non-negotiable to me.

chanie44 · 25/06/2015 19:56

I'm not bad, but not good either. There isn't much left over at the end of the month as we have a high outgoings (mortgage and nursery).

I have made some good chances over the past few years - I barely spend any money during the working week, shop in lidl, bargain hunt for everything.

Money can still slip through my fingers as there is always something that is 'needed' at home or for the children. This and savings are the two areas I need to work on.

MsRinky · 25/06/2015 19:59

Until I was 35 we pretty much spent everything we earned. Then I had a bit of a lightbulb moment and went super frugal, paid my mortgage off by 40. Then relaxed for a bit. Back to frugal now, so I can cut my hours back at work and enjoy myself with time instead of money.

Pointlessfan · 25/06/2015 20:04

Pretty frugal really, I've taken a huge pay cut since having DD so have had to take care of the pennies.

redskybynight · 25/06/2015 20:16

I'm a saver. I really begrudge spending money on anything - to the point that my socks have more hole than sock and DH is wondering how long it will be before I buy some new ones.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/06/2015 20:17

bit of both - I save a little, have enough to cover my bills etc and spend anything that's left on shite

ThreeLeggedHaggis · 25/06/2015 20:19

I try to be a saver but every time we get a decent amount in the savings account, something big happens and we have to empty it. Sad We don't have any debt though and always have at least a little surplus at the end of the month.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 25/06/2015 20:24

Pretty rubbish, although the bills get paid. Definitely a spender rather than a saver. My brother died when he was 27 and he was really, really worried about money at the time. After he died it transpired he was so worried as he owed £500 on an overdraft, which isn't a huge amount in the grand scheme of things. Always vowed never to let money get me down or rule my life. If we've got it, we spend it, if we haven't we dont.

VinoTime · 25/06/2015 20:24

I'm...a bit of both.

I pay all my bills first and foremost come payday. I budget well and bargain hunt like you wouldn't believe when it comes to buying groceries, toiletries, clothing, etc. I pay a little extra into my pension pot each month so that I feel a bit more secure when it comes to the future. But I'm also a firm believer in that good old saying: You can't take it with you. I save a little for both DD and I, but I certainly don't hoard most of my income in my ISA. I don't really see the point - I'm alive now and I work hard. I want some experiences behind me and the odd luxury to enjoy. We don't have loads of money, but a recent job change means we are a lot more comfortable now than ever before.

Want to pay for a holiday? I pay the deposit and then pay it up as and when. Something goes wrong in the house? Call the landlord. My house gets robbed? Contents insurance can cough up. I've photographed everything for the buggers Grin Something happens to the animals? Pet insurance can cough up. I need to buy something 'big'? I can either buy outright and be a bit stretched for the month or I can pop it on my Very account and pay it off over a couple of months interest free. I don't own a car, so no worries or financial outlays there. Everything in my house, at this current time, is owned outright. Should I die, DD gets a cushy amount from my work and everything in the house.

All is well and good and we have lots of things booked/planned to look forward to. I feel like we've got quite a nice balance - I don't go too far one way or the other.

avoiretre · 25/06/2015 20:25

I never get into debt, not even an overdraft...golden rule.
I don't save massively either though. In a society where rich people can make huge sums through buying up property and renting it out (among other things), I'm not going to deny myself some enjoyment for the sake of saving a few quid.

Sceptimum · 25/06/2015 20:28

Saver on a good proportion and spender on what I don't whisk out of my paycheque to save. :)
I'm pretty good and have a decent buffer, pay bills etc easily and still have plenty of fun money but I was broke all though my 20s, only got good at budgeting in my 30s when I realised saving was the only way I had out of permanent crisis mode.

PumpkinPie2013 · 25/06/2015 20:39

We are both savers and very good with money.

When I was growing up, my parents weren't good with money and often worried about bills and debts.

I never wanted to worry like that so I save, only spend what I can afford. We are not materialistic although we have a nice home (everything is paid for ).

We have savings too which we don't touch.

Just glad DH is the same as me Grin

lilacclery · 25/06/2015 22:51

Bit of both more a spender, have debt from when I was on short time at work & my mat leaves and once last Mat leave was over set up a spreadsheet to tackle this.
I pay my bills first, then debt, then have a little left for living well. I'm not willing to have dds memories be of scrounging just to pay back debt a couple of months earlier. Living within my means. But have a second job to help clear debt that bit faster.

I divide all major bills by number of weeks until they're due & this is saved in a separate account.

Example I found a cheap holiday & am saving through Christmas club at work for it. In December when this pays out it covers spending money, balance due on holiday, paying childcare while we are away etc

I work best with a target in mind

whois · 25/06/2015 22:53

I am both good and bad.

Good as in I've never been in debt apart from mortgage, student load and student overdraft.

Bad that I could save a lot more, but I want to have fun.

JaceLancs · 25/06/2015 23:51

I am terrible with money
I have very little of it to start with
Most of it goes on bills etc inc a large mortgage
I get so depressed about not having any - I spend money I don't have to cheer myself up!

MiddleAgedandConfused · 25/06/2015 23:54

Was a spender until I was made redundant and I realised I had no savings. I could have lost my house - huge wake up call. After that I became a saver.

teacher54321 · 26/06/2015 06:09

All bills are always paid on time, both of us have good pension provision etc. However since going on maternity leave 3 years ago and then being part time since and buying the dream house last year I've always been in my overdraft and have had money on my credit card. I have a new full time job starting in September-salary doubling and am DETERMINED to pay those things off within a year. Am sick of being broke!

overreactionemoticon · 26/06/2015 06:35

I'm pretty good. I'm on a minimum wage, term time only salary, but all bills are paid and I manage to save a little too.

A 'friend', however, lectures me for not saving enough because he saves 75% of his income. What he doesn't seem to realise is that because he is a high earner, and I am not, the amount he is left with after saving 75% is still almost double my entire income. He'd find it hard to live on what I do I think.

I'm not driven by money though, hence the shite job. I could do better for myself and my future if I'd chosen a career based on salary. So maybe I'm actually shitq with money?
