To be completely furious with my daughters school?!

So yesterday I picked my children up from school, dd1 was crying at the door, so I asked her what was wrong and she told me that whilst practicing for sports day she had fallen and hurt her foot, she refused to walk properly, I asked her if she'd been to the medical room (because only the week before she collapsed after school, after not feeling well, the school told her to have a drink and she'd be fine) she said she had and that they'd put an ice pack in it and sent her on her way, they didn't even remove her sock.

Fast forward a few hours, I knew something was wrong, so took her to a&e and sure enough it's broken, she's now in q cast for 4-6 weeks.
Aibu to be furious that they didn't call me, and left her in agony and unable to walk for 2 hours? She was clearly in pain and had been crying and after her collapsing last week I specifically asked them to keep an eye on her.
I'd like a meeting with the head teacher, I won't lose my temper but I'm very upset, is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance

goodbyetoallthat

I doubt if there was a school nurse on site. Most school nurses work out of a central base, usually a health centre, and come into school on request.

bigfam · 25/06/2015 17:50

From what I've learned today (from them)she was treated by office staff

It is generally office staff. The teacher sends an ill child to the office. They are just as likely to be first aiders as teachers.

This happened to me when I was 9, I shattered my ankle playing rounders and got told that I should be a big girl and was sent back to class. I couldn't weight bear. Sad turned out i had multiple ankle fractures.

Not helpful but I'm saddened to hear it's still happening. Even then it was a school that was very poorly run and this was one of the incidents that caused them to pull me out of the school.

scribblegirl · 25/06/2015 19:29

Oh this was the mid 90s.

hollieberrie · 25/06/2015 19:47

I'm a teacher and this is not ok. They should have called you. If in doubt we always call and suggest the child goes to A&E, better safe than sorry. Definitely ask for a meeting with the head to express your concerns.

Becles · 26/06/2015 07:17

I twisted my ankle on the way to school and it was a bit achy, but because I was prone to sprains we just carried on walking the rest of the mile to school.

After first break, it was a bit sore so I asked the teacher to call my mum who was not best pleased to leave work and took me home for fussing. The next morning I couldn't weight bear so we went to casualty to double check and she made me walk the full length of the hospital car park because she thought I was being a drama llama.

Result of the xray? Broken ankle still hurts so many decades later.

This is awful

I would be going bat shit

Mehitabel6 · 26/06/2015 07:22

You can't win really. I have seen threads on here with people moaning because schools play safe and call parents in over any slight bump.
I think you need to go in and have a chat, but certainly not with guns blazing. If doctors can miss the same thing in their own child then anyone can!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/06/2015 09:35

She's only 6!!! For some reason I assumed we were talking about a much older child.. I was picturing secondary school! I would be furious!

GoblinLittleOwl · 26/06/2015 10:27

Why do you need to discuss this on mumsnet first? If you are genuinely concerned, as you have a right to be, you contact the school immediately and ask for an appointment and an explanation.
The school offered first aid, clearly didn't recognise the seriousness of the injury, but should have informed you when you collected your daughter from school. They should have given you a notification of incident and treatment; our school always does.

Floggingmolly · 26/06/2015 10:34

Sorry, But " Fast forward a few hours, I knew something was wrong so I took her to A & E" is completely different to "I immediately knew something was wrong so took her to A & E".
Why use that ridiculous phrase at all if there was in fact no time delay?
Op changed her tune when people pointed out that she hadn't noticed for a while either.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 26/06/2015 10:35

Flogging she has clarified that she meant fast forward a few hours from the accident.
I don't know why people bother posting on Internet forums if they are going to assume the poster is lying. Surely you have to take what they say at face value as there's no proof otherwise?

bigfam · 26/06/2015 13:49

I didn't change my tune, I can see how it reads to some people looking back at it, but to me it made sense
