I have £45 in vouchers. Some ran out at the end of the month and I could only buy clothes.

So I went to a big store in a city centre. I wandered around the ladies section. I don't wear trousers and skirts so yes that cut my choice right down but a lot of what I saw I didn't fancy anyway.

I thought I would chose a pretty summer dress. I'm in my 60s and most of what i saw was just plain frumpy, horrible material or more than I wanted to pay. £80 for a pretty plain summer dress when I have prettier at home.

So I decided to buy a couple of bras. Ineed a white one for my up and coming wedding but it's now appointment only and I wasn't able to make that time.

So I just decided to go with the size I wear. ( the three assistants that were chatting could have whisked me into a cubicle and at least measured me while they waited for their next client/ victim to show up) in the time I told them my measurements, they got their tape measures out and converted my statistics to a bra size.

So I bought two very ordinary white ones...£22-50 each. Plain, ordinary boring white just to use the vouchers. A couple of weeks ago I bought a much prettier one for £10.

I'll probably take them back and get a credit note and see if anything else comes in....I'm not holding m breath.
I was so looking forward to a nice treat but came away thinking ....just who are they designing for?

Oh, and that dreadful ad with Doreen Lawrence and Nicola Adams, amongst others. Were we supposd to be inspired? I like both women, but they can't sell me clothes.

Ketchuphidestheburntbits · 24/06/2015 22:33

YANBU.

It's years since I bought clothing from M&S other than underwear. Their menswear is also terrible as my DH hates their shirts (Asda are better for work shirts as they don't crease, are a nice soft fabric and are less than half the price). Last time I looked round M&S my eyes hurt from all those garish prints in horrible colours!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/06/2015 22:54

I've read through these posts and YY some of the clothes are Confused
But the top I saw was self coloured oink, the jumper was black/white and the trousers were black. I'm very wary of patterns and randomly added tat.

I was in Primark with DD last week and everything I touched was synthetic and felt either crispy or plasticy.
If I wore them, I'd likely combust through static.

Archer26 · 24/06/2015 22:56

I agree with PP up thread about per una. It's the patterns! Some horrid lime green and pink swirly combination that they'll then make into a seersucker skirt and throw some random sequins at it and add a plaited leather belt.
Sorry. I find m&s riles me up somewhat.

elly333pink · 24/06/2015 23:06

Totally agree. Dreadful patterns and colours and 'granny-style' mid-calf skirts. Yuk yuk yuk????. They did sort of get it right about two years ago when they had a nice range of retro-print tops etc but it was short-lived! I reckon they must have some middle-aged men as buyers who think they know what women of a certain age will go for. So disappointing.

I do find M&S to be very overpriced.

YANBU

lemonade30 · 24/06/2015 23:29

buy bras.

I'm a 30F and find their bras to be fab.

Summerisle1 · 24/06/2015 23:36

They just miss the mark every single time. The hems are unfashionably or unflatteringly low or high, never quite right. The necklines aren't right

This ^

They also have the weirdest colour combinations that manage to be drab and yet horribly bright at the same time. Who on earth wants to wear that particularly insistent shade of magenta, let alone when it is combined with a shade best compared to cat sick? And then there's the horrid shiny materials and the turnip shaped trousers.

To be honest, it's a dismal experience strolling through M & S.

Becles · 24/06/2015 23:53

My friend and I spent £275 total during their 20% off day on Monday. Blush We quite like some of their stuff

BuggersMuddle · 25/06/2015 00:15

YANBU - most M&S stuff, even their attempts at 'fashion' can be spotted a mile off because they just don't get it quite right. Per Una sticks out a mile as try-hard hippy casual.

Their underwear is fairly horrible. Their nightwear is junky and doesn't wash well. (Both previously M&S staples).

These days I just buy tights (and even then only some of the time - more often in John Lewis).

Pico2 · 25/06/2015 00:24

I wanted to buy DD a few bits of school uniform from M&S online and fancied getting myself a few summer tops to bump the order up to free postage. I trawled through pages and pages of tops (no sleeve/neckline filter like the JL website) and couldn't find a single top I liked. How hard can it be?

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 25/06/2015 00:28

I have £20 in vouchers and can't find anything to buy.....

ChickenMe · 25/06/2015 06:13

Their cardigans are ok, their packs of knickers are alright too but the quality isn't what it used to be as the knicker material is now very thin.
I go to Matalan now - miles more funky and generous sizing (M&S sizes are very generous)

PunkrockerGirl · 25/06/2015 06:20

YANBU. I went in at the weekend looking for holiday clothes and couldn't find a single thing. I wouldn't even pay sale price for the drab load of tat that was on offer.

NoahVale · 25/06/2015 06:31

I was really disappointed in a bigger branch of M & S the other day, hardly any of their tops were cotton, i walked around and around and eventually found something I quite liked but still wasnt sure about.

I thought it was becuase my local branch was naff but this bigger branch very disappointing as well

NoahVale · 25/06/2015 06:33

I ended up in BHS Shock

Tinklewinkle · 25/06/2015 06:37

YANBU

I want to like M&S, I really do, but it's just so awful.

I was given £100 voucher by my boss for Christmas and I just can't spend it. I've been in several times but there's nothing I fancy.

Everything is just wrong - lengths not quite right or the colour isn't quite right. Then someone who appears to be high has been let at it all with a load of embellishments and what was an OK cardigan now has a random frill and jaunty buttons

We had a BBQ with some friends a couple of weeks ago, I spent it on food and wine

Their website is awful - I ordered a load of school uniform last year. All in stock when I ordered it, then a couple of weeks later the whole order was cancelled as it was now out of stock.

There are hundreds of threads like this all over the internet, they just don't seem to be listening to their customers

confusedandemployed · 25/06/2015 06:48

Another who would love to love them but just can't. It's always just a bit out.
A few months ago I did buy a nice pair of wedge sandals which I've worn loads - but only because I have a foot issue and can't wear heels ATM, they were reduced from £40(Shock! For sandals!) to £28 and I was desperate to find shoes I could wear without amputating my toe.

QueenofLouisiana · 25/06/2015 06:52

Glad it isn't just me! I'm 39, a size 14 and a teacher- their target market I would have thought? But everything is just slightly off, or out of stock.

I wanted to buy DS some school trousers, the skinny fit ones- no chance. Nothing on his size (11-12, not exactly a niche size).

I opt for pretty much anywhere else- supermarkets are fine for the uniform (all trashed by footie at playtime anyway).

YesThisIsMe · 25/06/2015 06:56

I like some of their shoes, Brazilian knickers, and Rosie bra and pants sets. I got a lovely slouchy casual handbag there last year which is lasting very well, and their camisole tops in the underwear section are good, cheap and come in lovely colours (unlike the current attack of peach and lemon yellow in the actual clothes section).

I do try to support them because they're a British company with reasonable ethics who pay their taxes but the outer garments very rarely catch my eye.

Sausages123 · 25/06/2015 07:11

The per una stuff is horrid and like boden and joules you can spot their clothes a mile off, however, I do like their jeggings though they fit me as they do a short length and they are fairly cheap.

I spent my energy vouchers on food though!

YesThisIsMe · 25/06/2015 07:11

Nice heeled sandals. IMO Insolia does actually work to make them more comfortable.

Not too bad if you want bodycon and don't mind those colours? they're not my colours but they're not actively offensive.

I genuinely like this dress for a wedding but too short for me and who the hell styled it with that horrible clashing fascinator?

manchestermummy · 25/06/2015 07:16

I like their Footglove shoe range as I have wide feet and am a half size, but in general YANBU.

I feel I ought to be in the target market - mid-30s, professional, have no particular interest in being 'trendy' but like to be smart and not frumpy - but they are just getting it wrong.

For me, it's the prices of things like dresses. I wear dresses for work - almost always, in fact - and I'll see something I like that'll cost £70. The length will be all wrong (I'm short) and the material will be odd. I'd sooner order from somewhere like Boden or Seasalt and get something that fits and is reasonable value!

Like others have said, a simple cardigan will have bits all over it.

I sometimes like the kids' clothes but again, it's expensive. I convinced myself that I must buy school uniform from there when dd1 started school but the white polo shirts were yellow by the end of September and the pinafore was so stiff dd refused to wear it.

beedeepullen · 25/06/2015 07:24

m&s clothing range is disgusting no matter your age.

you should take the over priced bras back and get a credit note, you can use it in the food department treat your self to a nice meal, bottle of wine and desert
