Totally depends on the pool - we have two local ones, DTs are nearly 4 and can still only handle about 20 mins in it it is freezing, the other when they've been able to stay in for the whole 45 min session since they were 1.

For those wondering, the oral rotavirus vaccine is live and is excreted in nappies, hence the nurse telling you to take extra precautions washing your hands for a week afterwards. I probably wouldn't take baby swimming the week after those vaccines just in case.

About half hour max. I took ds from six weeks and he loved it. Sometime only ten minutes sometimes longer. Believe me they'll tell you Grin

Thanks Peace - my relevant child is 19mo now so I was clawing back the memory!

The cold virus multiplies best at just below body temp - so if you lower your body temp eg going out with wet hair then they can multiply enough to cause the cold infection - obvs the effect of getting cold can be more drastic in babies such as increased risk of hypothermia and they are more susceptible to viruses and bacteria that could be in the pool so play it by ear and follow her lead, take an extra towel to wrap her in while changing and bobs your uncle - also some community pools do baby sessions where they turn the heat up in the pool and one I go to has a baby pool which is warmer than the main pool.

I took mine from 6 weeks old and he loved it. We went in for 15 min to start, but now (1 year) he would stay in all day. We went yesterday and he shrieked with laughter the whole time. It was definitely as much for his benefit as mine, though I obviously love it too.

I took 2 towels plus a blanket to wrap him in after when he was really little.

I took both of mine from 8 weeks with no ill effects - my 7yo is entering her first gala next weekend and my nearly 3yo starts lessons without me on Sunday . Both lasted around 20 mins at first.

The official advice is that whilst you need to make sure you wash your hands after handling nappies after the rotavirus vaccine swimming is fine.

Enjoy! Smile

I first took DS swimming at 7 weeks- after I'd had my postnatal check and he'd had his first set of jabs. I don't think he had norovirus jab though. He loved it and lasted about 20 mins. I got him a wetsuit gong for the next time we went and we'd go for 30-40 mins from then on. He's now nearly 7 and we still go swimming least once a week.

I had slim babies- both felt the cold and were visibly shivering within 10 minutes of being in the baby pool- but all babies are different- and all pool temperatures are different.

DS went in the pool at three weeks for the first time, but it was my own pool at home and heated (and it was 40 degrees outside). This is in Australia though, so our kids are in the water early and often. I live near the beach, so it would be very unusual for any child to come to school without already have well developed swimming skills. It's seen as one of the most important things a child needs to learn around here.
