Round lasagne

haveabreakhaveakitkat · 21/06/2015 16:37

I've made lasagne for tea. I grabbed the first pot I could see to bake it in. It's round. All four members of my family have separately walked into the kitchen and said 'round lasagne?!'

Is it that odd?

I'm thinking of making a square apple pie to go with it Smile

Though you can apparently cook an omelette in one as it is sometimes more convenient that spending the three minutes in takes in a pan Confused

I'm happy to report that DH's lasagne was delicious, if a little too cheesy on top.

Not at all squishy.

I look forward to leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Reheated lasagne is the best.

SillyStuffBiting · 21/06/2015 19:35

Everyone is coming from a different starting point in their cooking. Some of the results people post on pages like slow cooked wonders might genuinely be a big deal for them. I wouldn't sneer, just scroll past.

There's some good stuff in amongst it all.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 21/06/2015 19:46

too cheesy on top??? you cant have too cheesy on top when it comes to lasagne. I had a delish pub lasagne yesterday. There were lovely crunchy cheesy bits all round the edges ......mmmmm

Noodledoodledoo · 21/06/2015 19:57

Will also recommend using Tortillas - I had whist in Mexico with a chicken based mix and it was delicious. Have served it to many since I came home and they all love it.

No soggy tortillas here.

DustBunnyFarmer · 21/06/2015 20:00

Nice lasagne has structural integrity and stacks tall and proud on the plate, but round is just as acceptable as square or rectangular.

Fish - If there was a like button on MN, I'd like your post it on the strength of that ^ statement alone.

Behooven · 21/06/2015 20:04

So the cannelloni tubes are all standing up instead of lying down? Confused

Round lasagne, square apple pie, tortilla wrap pasta, I'm reporting this thread....

DustBunnyFarmer · 21/06/2015 20:15

That is correct Behooven. Unorthodox, but effective. Granted it is not as easy to dish up neatly, but the distribution of pasta:filling is good and - like the OP - I can rarely be arsed if I have to stuff it myself. Prefilled doesn't work for me as I like to freestyle/get creative on the fillings.

haveabreakhaveakitkat · 21/06/2015 20:27

Needs a bit of slop to dunk the garlic bread in Smile

Didn't we all have square apple pie at school? Big rectangular trays with the pie cut into squares?

I don't think lasagne should have structural integrity and reach for the skies - lasagne should not be firm and stand tall nor flaccid ans slop lazily over plate, it should ooze languidly in it's own sauce like Mata Hari sliding out of silk underwear.

Behooven · 21/06/2015 20:29

I am definitely going to try that dust

The5DayChicken · 21/06/2015 20:51

Lasagne should definitely ooze. If it stands in a perfect square then the filling is too dry. It just is. Neither lasagne soup nor lasagne bricks are ok! Heathens.

reni1 · 21/06/2015 21:37

Round lasagne Shock ! What next, triangular fish fingers? Shocking.

Anotheronesoon · 21/06/2015 22:03

I'm Italian. Lasagna should definitely slop a bit.

curlyclaz13 · 21/06/2015 22:13

I really want lasagne now.
I have also tried the tortilla lasagne, veggie mexican version from nigella, it was very nice. Although not really lasagne

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/06/2015 22:16

No.
I'll have to square to circle I'm afraid.

DustBunnyFarmer · 21/06/2015 22:20

Anotherone How do Italians get so many layers of pasta into their lasagne? Is the trick ground (rather than lumpy minced) beef? My sauce is always too lumpy to get more than a couple of layers in.

The5DayChicken · 21/06/2015 22:27

Same here DustBunny. I couldn't get my meat layer any thinner but it's just really bloody chunky no matter how many hours I leave it to cook down.

CatMilkMan · 21/06/2015 23:28

Are you cooking the mince in batches so it has room to break down before adding the tomatoes.

goldopals · 22/06/2015 08:29

All of my lasagnes are round. I do not have a rectangular dish

cleanmachine · 22/06/2015 10:27

No no no. Lasagna should not be erect. It should be soft, most, oozing.....

KatoPotato · 22/06/2015 10:31

How do you make a stiff lasagne? Please share!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 22/06/2015 10:38

surprisingly wraps work pretty well, not soggy at all. I have done it once but a fave meal in the family is leftover spag sauce chillied up with added beans put in wraps in a dish and topped with sour cream or creme fraiche and chedder then baked.

CallMeExhausted · 22/06/2015 11:51

I am always doing "non-standard" things with food. Round lasagne (slice it like a pie), apple pie with the apple as the pie shell and crust over the top, meatloaf muffins... The kids get a chuckle out of mum not "following the rules".
