To feel hurt that my lovely dog licking someone caused such distress.

He's just a big affectionate softy, the only trouble is he thinks everyone loves him. We went for our walk this morning in the park and sat down on a bench for a rest. We'd only been sat down a minute or so and this woman sits down next to me. We were just chatting about the weather when all of a sudden she jumped up shrieking, "ahhh the dog just licked my leg"
Now I know not everyone loves dogs but i thought it was a bit of an over reaction. I did apologise but I felt kind of sorry for my dog, who seemed to have a bit of a hurt look on his face. Wabu to have felt sorry for my dog or should I have felt more sorry for the woman?

Thank you Hawkeye and Usual for the much needed common sense.

I would have been utterly horrified to have been licked by a strange dog as I absolutely loathe dogs and am terrified of them due to a childhood incident.

Costacoffeeplease · 21/06/2015 20:01

Then I guess your husband would have been a bit more careful about sitting down next to a dog eh cookiemonster?

Costacoffeeplease · 21/06/2015 20:01

And I doubt you would have sat next to it too mothers?

usualsuspect333 · 21/06/2015 20:02

The pile in , on this thread is fucking horrible. But that's MN all over just lately.

I'm sure your husband wouldn't be so daft as to sit next to a dog then,MrsCookieMonster.

sweetgrape · 21/06/2015 20:03

I haven't ignored the answers though Cookie I've stated I've taken them on board, but the pack want blood, they don't want me to admit I'm being unreasonable. If everyone on AIBU didn't bother posting for the reasons you stated there wouldn't be the site, so it's a bit pointless to say that to anyone tbh.

I like dogs but i dont want to be slobbered over by a random one tbh. Was she ignoring him? If she petted/stroked him then you expect it , but otherwise I wouldnt expect or want that tbh. I am around strangers dogs often on the tube /in the park and they dont randomly lick people minding their own business who they are sat next to. Thats a behaviour issue frankly. He needs to learn to sit and not bother strangers.

MrsCookieMonster · 21/06/2015 20:12

Fair enough Sweet, like I said I think you have had a hard time. I certainly wouldn't sit next to someone on a bench with a dog, her reaction was a bit OTT but she prob just got a fright.
Not relevant here but unfortunately a large number of people think you want their dog to jump all over you and even if you say my DH is allergic please call your dog away they will say he wouldn't hurt a fly, really I don't give a shit how would you like it if I jumped up and licked you!

usualsuspect333 · 21/06/2015 20:12

Maybe her ankle smelt like pedigree chum and he couldn't help himself.

MrsCookieMonster · 21/06/2015 20:15

To all the people saying well he wouldn't sit next to a dog on a bench, yes obviously he wouldn't. The point I was making that is not always a straightforward as people being scared of dogs, finding them disgusting etc it is sometimes more serious so maybe dog owners could consider this. Mind you the ones who would care are probably the ones who act responsibly in the first place and the other people think that people should love their dog as much as they regardless of the reasons that they don't so I'm probably wasting my time.

usualsuspect333 · 21/06/2015 20:17

I don't have a dog, but I wouldn't get hysterical if one licked me.

Dog threads on MN are bonkers.

Binkybix · 21/06/2015 20:22

I would sit next to a dog on a bench and not expect it to lick me. TBH if it did though and the owner apologised I wouldn't really care.

However if the owner had an attitude like the one OP is giving off on this thread then I would be a bit pissed off.

I hate it when dog owners say you should not go near their dog in a public space if you don't want to be licked etc. No - you should stop your dog doing it or keep your own distance, even if that inconveniences you a bit.

Hurt doggy feelings FFS.

mummytime · 21/06/2015 20:30

I would be cross if your dog licked me (and I have no allergies).
My DD would freak out - she has ASD.

Your dog should be under control, and that means not licking strangers. I can cope with sniffing, but wouldn't expect licking.

sweetgrape · 21/06/2015 20:32

Fwiw my dog would never jump up and start licking someone's face. I actually asked if IWBU for feeling hurt that my dog has caused such distress. Ive been told I was, but not in the light hearted way I meant it to be. Some of you need to seriously lighten up and not be so ready to have a go.
In regards to those that told me to "control my wild or disgusting" animal, I take exception to because he is far from wild and to call my beautiful kind dog disgusting is hurtful and unneccessary and it wasn't answering what my thread was about. He is a well trained obedient dog and I don't think any dog is perfect but that's his only fault, which I admit he shouldn't do but as one poster said its what dogs do and have done since time began. It's obviously my fault for letting him do it. But I've never met a dog yet who was perfect, far from it so I'm not going to worry too much.

Ergh strange dogs. Would have urged if was me. Happened to me train. Posh retired couple enquires if I was was allergic. I am not, but did not want to be LICKED. Incidentally I allergic to flea bites. Bloody dog must have been crawling as my ankles are covered in revolting sores a week on Angry

usualsuspect333 · 21/06/2015 20:36

I'd hide this thread if I was you, Sweet.

It's one of those threads were more and more posters will just pile in to give you a kicking.

Wine for you and Biscuit for your licky dog.

Costacoffeeplease · 21/06/2015 20:36

So now a dog licking someone isn't under control - beyond hilarious, this is the thread that keeps on giving, can't wait for the next batshit crazy idea to pop up

You're all absolutely priceless, thanks for the best laugh on here for ages Smile

usualsuspect333 · 21/06/2015 20:38

A dog licked my ankle once and my leg fell off. True fact.

coffeeisnectar · 21/06/2015 20:40

I love dogs and I don't mind them licking me either. I positively drive dh mad by stopping to talk to and pet every dog we pass when out. If I get a lick on the hand I think of it as a gesture of doggy friendship :o

We have a small house and two cats so we have to stick to borrowing neighbours dogs to take for a walk.

sweetgrape · 21/06/2015 20:42

Usual I think I'll have to, they're all out tonight aren't they Grin Costa I know it's hilarious isn't it. I always say, if a robber came into my house he'd probably get licked to death Grin , I'd probably get sued by the robber. Grin

I'm not surprise usual are you sure you didn't catch rabies and distemper too?

Binkybix · 21/06/2015 20:43

Well you actually asked if you were being unreasonable to feel sorry for your dog, not for being sorry he caused distress.

Costacoffeeplease · 21/06/2015 20:44

No don't hide it op, you'll miss some absolute gems, I'm sure!

Happfeet2911 · 21/06/2015 20:44

Stupid bitch, I love dogs and trust them more than most humans, some people are just too precious, sorry but my money is backing the dog! X
