Just come in from work where an elderly lady was made to rush having a poo because someone wanted to get home

I hate reporting people; I'm going to have to aren't I?

If you don't feel like you can approach management, use the whistle blowing scheme. This isn't acceptable.

I don't condone what your colleague did at all but I do think it's managements fault if they don't pay overtime and expect people to work past time on an hourly rate out of the goodness of their hearts.

So do management pay overtime if time with clients runs over?

Maybe if a carer's salary was decent it would a) attract people who want to do it for the right reasons and b) make it worth people's while to go above and beyond.

I don't think your colleague was right but I can understand the sort of beaten down and unappreciated mindset that might have led to it.

I know a couple of people who work in care homes because they couldn't get or find anything they were interested in and knew that carers are always in short supply. Neither of them are remotely suited to the job. They're bored, frustrated and underpaid and the people they have to care for probably know that.

Most staff would stay the extra 10-15mins needed to look after her but clearly this one doesn't understand the care part of the job title carer.

Yeah but Laurie we were actually finishing early and anyway if she'd said - I need to get home I would have stayed.

There was no need for rushing her like that.

Given the extra info you've just posted about actually finishing early then yes, she was entirely in the wrong.

I'm shocked that anyone would even think about overtime pay, or what their hourly rate is, when an elderly lady simply needs a few extra minutes to do a poo. My mind boggles at the lack of empathy, the lack of dignity for the poor woman.

This is why I cannot ever go back into care work, the pay is very poor now, and the type of people it seems to attract has changed. I have encountered some pretty unpleasant characters and no amount of complaining/reporting to management make any difference. It appears that if you make any kind of complaint against staff , they seem to find a reason to find fault with you work, a few of my friends have recently been suspended after blowing the whistle on fellow members of staff.

When I was job searching I was asked by my job helper if I wanted to go to an 'open day' on care work. Not something I'd considered before but worth the effort to look into it as I was looking to retrain completely in order to find stable work.

70% of the people there were under pain of benefit sanctions. I.e. go and apply or we stop your money.

Husband and I have a pact about when one can no longer look after the other and it doesn't involve care homes and helpers.

I am definitely reporting that. I think email might be better so there's a record?

Thats so sad, it actually makes my heart ache for the poor lady.
