to ask vegetarians if they would eat lab grown meat?

The cost of lab grown meat has apparently come down from over $300,000 to $11. If this could replace meat harvested from the killing of animals but would still use animal genetics at a microscopic level to grow these burgers (without harming live animals), would you eat them? The same goes with genetically produced milk, grown by combining genetically modified yeast?

I'm not a vegetarian and I would definitely eat lab grown meat. I think this is the future of food.

Yuck yuck yuck. And I'm a carnivore.

SaucyJack · 18/06/2015 19:00

Hell yes- although I'd regard it as junk rather than "real" food.

I'm veggie because I don't like chewing through the flesh of a murdered previously-living creature. Lab grown "meat" wouldn't be an ethical problem for me.

Ipigglemustdie · 18/06/2015 19:01

If they could grow a huge chunk of meat that looks like chicken and tastes like chicken without bones or ligaments and they get the skin to crisp nicely when cooked and it was cheaper than real chicken then yep.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/06/2015 19:02

Vegan. No. I just dont think I could eat meat now, even if lab grown

RedCurlyTots · 18/06/2015 19:04

No.

Elllimam · 18/06/2015 19:04

It would be good to get the nutrients of meat without the cruelty though. I massively struggle to get enough iron in my diet.

ImprobableBee · 18/06/2015 19:06

YABU for lumping all vegetarians together as if they all care about the welfare of food. There are a lot of reasons a person could choose to be vegetarian. This one gets a particularly bad rep and I happen to resent it.

2cats2many · 18/06/2015 19:07

In principle, no. In practice, yuk!

Reminds me of the Chickie Nobbs in Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood and that book didn't end well as far as human life on this planet is concerned.

noeffingidea · 18/06/2015 19:08

No I wouldn't eat it. I don't eat meat because I think it's rank, rather than any ethical reason so it wouldn't make any difference to me.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 18/06/2015 19:13

No. Haven't eaten meet for over 25 years and it's just not food to me anymore.

SylvaniansAtEase · 18/06/2015 19:16

No - urgh.

I think it's the last possible thing that will be the future. Great in theory, will undoubtedly fall flat on its arse because people will instinctively think VOM.

So not the future, more like the Sinclair C5 of the food industry Grin

littlejohnnydory · 18/06/2015 19:54

I wouldn't. Not for ethical reasons, it's just so long since I ate meat that I wouldn't fancy meat at all.

I would be pleased if dairy products weren't so cruelly produced and would definitely use alternatives.

TedAndLola · 18/06/2015 19:55

Yes, I would eat it.

Been vegetarian for eight years.

CindyEcstacy · 18/06/2015 20:00

I would deffo eat lab grown meat if it had the exact same texture/taste/molecular structure/scientific makeup

The same scientifically IYKWIM

80sMum · 18/06/2015 20:03

No, I wouldn't eat it. I don't eat meat because it is better for ones health not to, so whether it's grown in a lab or not would be irrelevant.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2015 20:03

My DH (veggie for more than 30 years) says he would have no ethical problems with eating it if live animals weren't harmed.

He also says that if he had to eat it for health reasons he would.

But he doesn't 'fancy' it and probably wouldn't eat it unless he needed to.

I (not veggie) wouldn't eat it as I don't eat over processed food so I'd have to check how it was made before I did.

RhiWrites · 18/06/2015 20:04

I am 38 and have been a vegetarian since age 10. I might try at grown meat but I doubt I'd like it much as I love well prepared tofu

Poofus · 18/06/2015 20:07

Yes I think I would try it. Have been vegetarian for 25 years but can't see any animal welfare issue with this.

LittlePeasMummy1 · 18/06/2015 20:36

Been veggie for 15yrs for ethical reasons and would absolutely eat this.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 20:39

I'd rather turn vegetarian than eat lab grown meat.

silverglitterpisser · 18/06/2015 20:46

First original question I've been asked around vegetarianism in the 30+ years I've been one!

Interesting but I wouldn't eat it, no. Not for moral reasons but because I wouldn't be able to stomach it. Some meat substitutes even make me nauseous if they r too similar to the real thing so I'd have no chance with this.

dominogocatgo · 18/06/2015 20:56

Presumably they have to stop it growing by killing it.

StackladysMorphicResonator · 18/06/2015 20:59

Chuck, this is for you in response to your delightful comment.

to ask vegetarians if they would eat lab grown meat?
longlistofexlovers · 18/06/2015 21:02

I would. I'd take a lab grown organ too. Doesn't bother me.

Ausflug · 18/06/2015 21:17

I'm not a vegetarian, but no way would I touch it. I'd rather become a vegetarian (and I love meat).
