To think low carbing whilst on Slimming World is dangerous?

PlayingHouse · 18/06/2015 17:08

I have started Slimming world - which is essentially a lot fat diet.

I have seem a lot of people who are also on SW saying they are cutting carbs to help weight loss.

I thought that a low carb diet meant high fat in order to still get the nutrition you need.

So AIBU to think a low carb + SW diet is just dangerous and lacking in essential nutrients?

And a 'diet' which condones and encourages 'unlimited' is s bit crap. Encourages disordered eating imo

Muller lights have fructose, a load of weird chemicals and sweetener in them...which is why they taste nasty, but the point is that for some people they're a better option if you're trying to lose weight than what they'd normally go for.

As for disordered eating, it depends what triggers you, I can do SW because I buy pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit, veg, eggs, pulses, soya and quorn (I don't eat meat) and then I just make fairly normal food from them.

If I have to weigh, measure and keep track of everything I get obsessive, really unhealthily obsessive and I don't eat properly.

It's not actually supposed to be eat as much as you can, but more, don't think of things as forbidden, here's a list of ingredients that'll end up with low calorie meals if you follow the guidelines.

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2015 08:56

Well I'm sceptical of the whole slimming world money making exercise ( do they still say you don't need to actually exercise to lose weight?)

You can buy processed slimming world 'meals' now!! Full of crap! Just eat more protein and fat and you will be properly, naturally full!

tobysmum77 · 19/06/2015 08:58

I disagree re unlimited, I think you have to eat enough to not be constantly hungry. You will be slimmer/ have better eating habits if you eat more filling but lower calorie food than if you try to cut portions then end up bingeing because you are starving later.

Muller lights/ salad dressings are a red herring. Low fat doesnt have to equal high sugar if you choose lean meat and naturally low fat foods.

tobysmum77 · 19/06/2015 08:59

You don't need to eat lots of fat anyone.

tabulahrasa · 19/06/2015 09:03

They encourage you to exercise...but it's not essential to lose weight but that's backed up by lots of people, that losing weight is mostly diet related.

And yes of course they're a money making exercise, they're a business...

For some people it isn't as simple as just eat x or don't eat y...which is why I needed to join something to lose weight in the first place Grin left to my own devices I pick some faddy diet that lasts for 3 days, then put on more weight because I feel deprived.

On SW I eat real food, way more fruit and veg and I've lost a lot of weight, I'm now a healthy BMI for the first time in years.

maggieryan · 19/06/2015 09:03

Ive lost 3,stone in slimming world and lost it in four months. Having said that I completely cut out bread and potatoes and pasta and I can honestly say the weight fell off. I dont miss them at all from my diet. I've never felt or looked better and that's the first time I've said that since I hit 40(44 now)

LazyLouLou · 19/06/2015 09:12

Exercise is not a mechanism for weight loss, but is essential to maintain loss, but that reflects the psychology of it more than the physiology. It should be recommended for health only.

Of course you can lose weight via exercise, but it would be all consuming and dangerous Smile

tobysmum77 · 19/06/2015 09:16

my dh lost a stone from exercising. He runs about 35 miles a week Shock . It's much easier to watch what you put in is my opinion...

tabulahrasa · 19/06/2015 10:05

LazyLouLou - they do encourage exercise, for both boosting weight loss and just for its own health benefits, but they do also tell people that they will lose weight without it, because well, they will, lol, and for a lot of people it's too much at once to sort out their diet and start exercising at the same time.

I couldn't have exercised more than I was (I always walked) when I first joined as it was hard when I was that overweight and really really daunting. I started to build it in after I'd lost a few stones.

LazyLouLou · 19/06/2015 13:14

That's what my DSis found too, tabulahrasa. She has really enjoyed SW and has lost a shed load of weight (literally Smile). She too started exercise after a couple of stones had magically disappeared.

HelenaDove · 19/06/2015 14:15

I lost ten stone on SW over a decade ago. Did the pasta and mullerlights thing. Lost 10 stone in 18 months. I lost a stone a month for the first seven months and got gallstones from losing weight too quickly.

I gave up smoking in 2005 and gained 4 stone.

It has taken me the last two years to lose 3 stone 10 on SW. This time i cut my portion sizes and carbs and sugar because the old way just wouldnt work again and the loss was a lot slower but im older and have no gall bladder and my body is used to dieting.

Anyway its not a quick fix. All this has taken me since 2002. I dont drink or smoke or eat takeaways at all. Not arsed about food any more. But we have members starting now who want to lose 2 or 3 stone in 6 -8 weeks to get into a bikini thinking its a quick fix and basing it on looks alone. When its really about a lifestyle change and being healthier.

HelenaDove · 19/06/2015 14:18

I dont deprive myself though. I do have cake on my birthday and chocs at Christmas. But only do this on special occasions which works out about 4 or 5 times a year.

PlayingHouse · 19/06/2015 14:38

I can't imagine not eating potatoes or pasta or rice.

What do you eat??

This is my meal plan this week;

Fri - Pizza made out of sandwich thins with a few chips, salad and homemade coleslaw and corn on cob

Sat - Pulled beef in wm roll with salad, homemade coleslaw, sweet potato wedges.

Sun - Roast

Monday - homemade chicken curry with rice

Tues - homemade spag bol

Wed - Jacket poatao, tuna & sweetcorn with salad

Thurs - veg omelette with salad.

If I removed carbs, I would have no dinner ...

The "unlimited" is not stuff as much as you can until you are sick, it is eat what you need until you are full. Like people who aren't dieting do. No need to weigh and measure, just eat what your body needs. Incredibly sensible and I would think promotes the opposite of eating disorders - I would think obsessively weighing and measuring everything is much more likely to lead to disordered eating.

WaferInMyCoffee · 19/06/2015 23:24

playinghouse my SP days look like this

Breakfast porridge and fruit

Lunch bread roll with ham and salad, cherry tomatoes and mixed fruit

Dinner is meat and sauce and veg. So a chilli or a curry served on a huge bed of mixed veg.

But if I were cutting out bread I don't know what I would eat for lunch!

HormonalHeap · 19/06/2015 23:45

I have a friend who lost 5 stone on sw without cutting carbs.. But she stuck to it by the book

HelenaDove · 19/06/2015 23:49

I stuck to it by the book I still had to cut the carbs the second time.

WaferInMyCoffee · 20/06/2015 07:32

HelenaDove in my experience I've found anyone who has lost weight with SW and then gained again and revisits finds it so much more difficult 2nd/3rd whatever time. I know several people (including myself) who joined, the weight just "fell off" then over time for whatever reason, the weight has crept back on and rejoining group again it just doesn't work so well second time round. For me I think SW was a completely different way of eating so it kinda jolted my body into losing weight. Now all my meals that I cook are SW ones, but other factors have meant I gained some weight back (for me it is emotional stuff, eating between meals, not cooking for myself etc) and revisiting SW it just doesn't fall off like it did before. It works, but so so slowly. And becasue I am still battling the emotional stuff every time I manage to lose a few pounds something happens to sabotage it and it goes back on! (But that is for another thread)

When I first did Sw it was the straightforward EE, I didn't always follow 100% and I lost nearly 2 stone in 3 months. Now I struggle to lose 2lb in that time!!

alphabettyspaghetty · 20/06/2015 08:52

I've lost nearly 5 stone on sw from January. I eat by the plan.

Someone mentioned the sw meals up above but if you actually look at the ingredients that make the meals up you will be surprised -there are far far less additives in them than you think. Slimming world also encourage you to make your own by providing the recipe for that meal on the back.

DisappointedOne · 20/06/2015 10:09

I can't imagine not eating potatoes or pasta or rice.

What do you eat??

I don't eat it those things, or meat. Meals here include:

*cauliflower pizza
*butternut squash and spinach curry with cauliflower rice
*paleo granola

  • veggie scramble - peppers, mushrooms, onions scrambled with eggs and topped with cheese
  • almond bread
  • soup
  • quiche with crust made of ground almonds served with homemade coleslaw
  • baked cheesecake with almond crust
  • berries
  • salad with feta/nicoise
  • creamy fish pie topped with sweet potato and butternut topping
  • tiramisu
  • omelettes with salad or veg
  • tuna steaks with veg
  • veggie cabbage carbonara
  • stir fry with prawns and nuts

Thanks just what I can think of off the top of my head.

HelenaDove · 21/06/2015 01:29

Wafer Ive heard many ppl say its harder the second time. Ive lost more slowly this time but the weight is staying off a lot easier. Smile
