Pale people who still use low SPF are idiots!

I'm on hols in the carribean and a pale white couple infront of us who arrived yesterday are putting on SPF 6, after 30 mins the bloke was already going pink and it was only 10am.
They are in early 30's so with all likelihood have been bombarded with the safe sun message for years.
Yes none of my business but why risk skin cancer for a tan/serious sunburn? I just don't get it!

Does anyone on MN find any holiday activity activity more enjoyable than policing other people's misuse of sun lotion?

I do.

But maybe I'm just weird.

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2015 19:45

Rogue repetition of activity there.

It's probably sunstroke.

sunshinerunner · 18/06/2015 19:45

Why do people take little babies to very hot countries anyway? We were in Arizona a week or so ago and there was a couple by the pool with a little baby, I felt so sorry for him/her as presumably they would risk overheating very quickly I would imagine.

I do love a tan though and wish I didn't. I always wear factor 15 and never burn. Put loads of suntan lotion on my DC's but not so much that they are in danger of developing rickets Grin!

I think it was your duty to stage an intervention sunshinerunner on behalf of the poor little chap/chapess

LuisSuarezTeeth · 18/06/2015 19:51

Go and tell them then OP.

DuchessofNorks · 18/06/2015 19:59

50+ for me. I'm going for full block this year though. It's not worth the risk. I'd rather be pale and alive.

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2015 20:03

Why do people take little babies to very hot countries anyway?

Presumably because some of them live in hot countries. Like parts of the US. Like Arizona, for instance?

SwedishEdith · 18/06/2015 20:04

I thought the difference between the factors once you got passed 30 was supposed to be negligible. Certainly not worth paying more for.

I love the feel of the sun on my skin (with protection!).

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2015 20:19

I think that too SwedishEdith

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 18/06/2015 20:19

I wish tanned skin wasn't seen as such a desirable thing. I never understand why people visit somewhere beautiful but spend the entire time attempting to become as Brown as possible. For what?! Praise and adulation on their return? Envy from their friends? The health risks combined with leathery skin are just not worth it in my opinion.

This year I'm trying to embrace my inner English rose!!

SmallMustard · 18/06/2015 20:24

I never wear sun cream in this country despite having pale skin. I've never burnt. Overseas I use factor 30/40/50 depending on the country. The DCs are olive skinned and tan at the drop of a hat, they used to wear factor 30 all day sun cream to school but protested so much and stopped, they only half to blink and they are tanned.

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2015 20:26

I also find the OP's idea of loving a bit of people-watching strange.

Why would you want to spend time observing other people and craning your neck to check out their SPF unless you were a social anthropolgist and getting paid for it?

Sounds a bit weird. But each to their own.

EauPea · 18/06/2015 20:42

Was it this couple When

tomatodizzymum · 18/06/2015 20:57

Avoid the sun between 10-3 whatever factor you have. Mad dogs are a thing of the past with rabies vaccine. Sadly there's no vaccine for being a miday sun worshipping idiot.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 18/06/2015 21:18

Er I'm not specifically checking out everyone's sun tan lotion choice...
Hard not to people watch when you are in a hotel full of people!

You noticed that they arrived yesterday, they are using SPF 6 and the bloke went pink after 30 minutes.

I'd say that was pretty heavily invested.

Do you not have a Kindle?

Strokethefurrywall · 18/06/2015 22:41

You presume a lot sunshinerunner - why would you feel sorry for babies that visit or live in hot countries? Neither of my babies have ever overheated by the pool or even on the beach when they were newborns, even though we do live in a year round hot country.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 18/06/2015 22:45

they were just infront of us and I'm observant. Don't think unreasonable to look at someone twice in 30 mins who is between you and the sea.
But maybe I'm just a nosy cow.
I have a kindle thanks but my book is a tad slow.

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2015 23:06

But maybe I'm just a nosy cow.

Mmm. You may be right.

Maybe other people were looking at you and judging.

Like the staff who got there even earlier than you but not to sunbathe.

After all, you rushed out to baste yourself before 10am – because that’s when you spotted the couple.

It’s not like you’re actively avoiding melanoma, is it? And it’s not just the palest people who get it.

Or are you going to tell me you went in before midday and took in an indoor tour of a museum? Maybe that’s what they did.

I wouldn't judge your choices but I'm sure as fuck going to judge your attitude when you comment disparagingly on the behaviour of others who are doing you no harm at all.

That's just mean.

Timri · 18/06/2015 23:17

I was just about to say do you feel sorry for all the babies that, you know, actually live in Arizona?
But I see a few people beat me to it

squoosh · 18/06/2015 23:20

I feel sorry for all the people living in Arizona. They're missing out on all the lovely soft drizzle.

SkippyTheBushKangeroo · 18/06/2015 23:38

I used to live in a hot sunny country and didn't get burnt in the 6 years I lived there despite spending a lot of time outdoors

Well, I've only gone and got burnt today. I was by the sea and with one thing and another didn't keep tabs on how long I was in the sun Blush

It's not too bad but my shoulders and chest are red. Sad Sad I didn't have any cream on except on my face. Can't believe I was so stupid as I'm usually so careful.

My face --> Angry

limitedperiodonly · 18/06/2015 23:53

You were sunbathing and trying to get a tan weren't you OP?

Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 19/06/2015 00:37

Well I was in the shade w hat and 50 on if that really matters and I've given up trying to tan and failing as a teenager.
Just using the couple nearby as an example about the spf message in general. They were very nice. My post wasnt a judgement on them individually.
Is that ok for you limited?
