To think that Kingsmill isn't actually bread

I rarely buy white bread but it was all that the local shop had in stock yesterday. But this stuff (Kingsmill, Soft White) cannot really be classified as bread can it? Apart from not feeling like bread (it feels more like it has been sprayed with plastic to keep it rigid), it doesn't smell or taste like bread. Is it bread? Am intrigued as to who would buy this stuff out of choice.

Chorleywood process = Art of Making Water Stand Upright Wink

I buy waitrose essential - fits in the toaster.

Processed bread is so disappointing these days - but the white stuff which is stripped of anything natural is the worst by a long shot. Burgens soya/linseed is lovely and toasts well but I stick with Lidl/Aldi own brand for a cheaper alternative (with no risk of getting seeds stuck between your teeth).

Though the shitty wax paper fatty has probably got more goodness in it than the bread.

Surlycue Try the Waitrose or Sainsbos pure rye or Spelt bread is like it's from another planet, it's how proper bread should be!
Though there's a problem it doesn't come sliced; you have to use a good bread knife to cut it! The toast is out of this world when it's a day or so old too.

ImprobableBee · 16/06/2015 16:00

pearpotter, oh dear. Hmm

fattymcfatfat · 16/06/2015 16:06

ppeat possibly but my DD would rather eat the bread, and considering she normally loves shoving paper in her gob I don't think she much likes it Grin

nigelslaterfan · 16/06/2015 16:10

YANBU, Kingsmill isn't bread imo. It's a factory food product, processed beyond any hope of positive nutrition.

fiverabbits · 16/06/2015 16:11

We buy brown bread from our local Lidl which is 300 yards from the Kingsmill factory which is always busy so someone must buy it. I prefer the crusty rolls from Morrisons which is 500 yards from Kingsmill we are spoilt for choice as there is also a Tesco's next to Kingsmill and they sell Kingsmill and Warburton's. No-one here eats white bread though.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/06/2015 16:15

Sometimes only crappy white sliced will do, I buy alsorts depending on what I want it for.

noddyholder · 16/06/2015 16:16

lovely toast though

BigRedBall · 16/06/2015 16:16

I like the Kingsmill 5050 bread. I used to like their wholemeal but it tastes sweet for some reason Confused.

I haven't had a good white toast with melted butter in a looong time as DH only likes brown or seeded breads. My sister is a fan of the 55p Lidl bread.

alrayyan · 16/06/2015 17:04

I will not hear a word, not one word I tell you against British bread. I buy it at about 8 quid a loaf here and there is nothing in the.world.like it.
Qatari bread is holey and powdery and goes.mouldy after a day.
The grass is always greener Wink

someonestolemynick · 16/06/2015 17:39

This is my thread Grin.

I grew up in Germany and the absence of proper bread is one of my major complaints about this wonderful country.

wankerchief · 16/06/2015 17:43

Nothing beats a fishfinger sandwich in crappy windmill with ketchup!

ppeatfruit · 16/06/2015 18:00

Aah but someonestolemy It is possible to get good bread in Eng. esp. in central London, but you have to know where to look as I said upthread , the large Waitroses' do very good artisan bread with wheat, rye, spelt, Kamut etc.

We live 50% in Fr. and don't eat wheat so we bring over their rye bread. You CAN get it in Fr. but it's a bit weird, the Kamut and spelt bio is good here too.

AwakeCantSleep · 16/06/2015 18:09

someonestole Same here!! Very little of what can be bought in the shops in this country passes as bread by my standards. It is a tragedy.

As a result I have started to make my own sourdough bread, which it turns out isn't hugely complicated but very, very satisfying. Only three ingredients: flour, water, salt. Lovely crumb, good texture, tastes delicious, keeps ages in the bread bin. There is no going back.

DoTheDuckFace · 16/06/2015 18:17

Wow I love processed white bread, I eat it plain all the time. It started when I was pregnant and craved it all three times but now I can't stop.

I am wondering what I am missing out in now though.

SaucyJack · 16/06/2015 18:19

I love cheap, white bread smothered in butter. But I don't class it as any more "real" food than a Happy Meal.

I'm not sure any bread is that good for one really. Every time I start eating toast and pasta again, I look six months pregnant by the end of a week.

Icelandicsuperyoghurt · 16/06/2015 18:20

YANBU. All bread in packets bears no resemblance to bread imo. I've decided the only way to get hold of anything properly bread-like is to find a bakery, go to Waitrose or make your own (which I can't be bothered to do). I wish our local shopping parades had bakeries on like they used to have. I am always goggle eyed when I visit family in Germany and on the nearest shopping street are 5 proper bakeries all selling different types of loaves (sigh).

123Jump · 16/06/2015 18:23

When I first moved to the UK years ago, the lack of proper bread really got to me.
Thank goodness Brennan's in now available.
If I could get some Kilmeaden I would be delirious.

Greenrememberedhills · 16/06/2015 18:29

Awake, can you post the recipe for the sourdough please?

CorBlimeyTrousers · 16/06/2015 18:32

I like Vogel bread. Bonus is that I can eat soya and linseed bread and keep my blood sugar levels within limits (I have gestational diabetes). Rye beds would be good for this too but I find it too hardcore.

I do like sliced white for a bacon sarnie. Healthwise I think brown bread is no better than white so you might as well enjoy white if that's what you fancy.

When I lived in Southern Germany I craved white slice sometimes but the nearest I could get was American style bread which was awful - crumbly almost and sweet.

LongDistanceLove · 16/06/2015 18:34

Well its better than American Bread shudders

I like all different types of bread, sometimes only a cheap plastic loaf will do.

LillianGish · 16/06/2015 18:34

Living in France so no shortage of fab bread here, but I must confess to popping to M and S occasionally for a sliced loaf which we keep in the freezer because sometimes only a piece of classic English toast will do (especially if accompanied by baked beans from the same source). Funny what you miss - I'm sure if I was back in Blighty I'd be feeling your pain.

Orangedandelion · 16/06/2015 18:36

My favourite basic white sliced loaf is either from waitrose or the co-OP as are their grain type loaves. And of course any of waitrose premium type loaves are always delicious IMHO.

I love making sourdough bread which I freeze and toast in the mornings so it lasts as long as I want it to. Obviously we eat it fresh as well that day but what's left over gets sliced and frozen.

Green Will do when I get home tonight.
