Fecking scooters during the school run

Due to family circs, I've been picking up my nieces and nephews for the past 2 weeks and will be picking them up for the foreseeable future.

The main gate is at the top of a hill, on a quite narrow but quite busy pavement. The road is also quite busy, especially at pick-up time.

Every single day groups kids have been whizzing about on these scooters- IMO it's a case of when an accident happens rather than if.

One child went straight into the back of my legs today and the mother looked as if it was my fault!

AIBU to ask my sister or BIL to raise it with the school? Or to mention it myself?

Ya sooo nbu!! I hate it but I have no problem with saying to kids 'slow down' 'stop' etc especially when they grunt 'scuse me' when there is clearly no room to 'scuse' them to.

Ah rant relief!

tobysmum77 · 12/06/2015 19:11

The bit that makes me utterly Confused is the admission that people can't get children to walk.... tell them they have to, assuming there is no physical impediment all sorted.

Yanbu op. Scooters are ok sometimes but to only travel on wheels is utterly ridiculous.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2015 19:14

there's no way their parents can grab them when a car is reversing out, and some of them are so small, it must be hard for the drivers too spot them.

If a car driver can't be arsed to check properly before reversing onto the road, they should reverse on to their driveway.

I switched to reversing on to my drive when I realised how much the privacy glass at the rear cut down visibility in darker conditions.

I find scooting far more tiring than walking! However, scooting is more fun.

fredfredgeorgejnr · 12/06/2015 19:19

If it will be unsafe when one goes under the car - ban the cars not the scooters surely?

You wouldn't say it was the kids fault when one petted my tiger and got eaten, the same applies to cars:

YANBU. There's a kid who comes zooming up behind us almost every morning and shouts "excuse me" as he hurtles past (without waiting for us to move). I never move for him. There are also two sisters who turn a corner scooting at top speed side by side. More annoying though are groups of parents standing on corners holding loads of scooters in such a way that they are all crisscrossed and stop you being able to get past without stepping out into the road.

So, so, so annoying.

tobysmum77 · 12/06/2015 19:20

But that's kind of the point life isn't always fun and children need to learn that.

No, but you put bloody strict guidelines in!

Scooting pedestrians(' parents) must take responsibility for their actions too.

Absolutely.

But they mostly don't reverse onto their driveways, and yet parents still let kids as young as 3yrs, scoot way ahead of them.

There's no point discussing the merits of reversing onto a driveway, while your toddler is laying in a hospital bed.

Seriously??

BettyCatKitten · 12/06/2015 19:24

They're the bain of my life on the school run too, Yanbu! I also live near the school on a hill, last year a child got knocked down.
What with fecking scooters and a cars parked all along the pavements it's a wonder we make it home in one piece!

holdyourown · 12/06/2015 19:24

YANBU it makes me anxious when I see little kids careering towards roads with the parents miles behind. I'm amazed more accidents don't happen actually. Very dangerous. I've seen kids scootering round coffee shops which seems to me a bit daft given potential elderly people carrying trays of hot drinks etc.

tobysmum77 · 12/06/2015 19:25

Yes seriously Hmm

SoupDragon · 12/06/2015 19:27

You could say that about every incidence of driving without due care and attention.

Yes seriously

What a sad, dull life.

My DC scoot to school and have a whale of a time doing it. Should I stop them because they are having too much fun?

WorraLiberty · 12/06/2015 19:31

The point I'm trying to make is that since parents can't second guess every driver's ability to see their small child, scooting along the pavement when they're trying to reverse, it would be far better to supervise their kids properly for their own safety.

Allowing a 3yr old to scoot way ahead of you on the pavement in a road full of houses with driveways, is not supervising that child properly imo.

Scooting is fun but it belongs in the park or other wide open spaces, away from traffic and busy pavements imo.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2015 19:31

You can't scoot on grass.

KneeHighScooterBruises · 12/06/2015 19:33

Errr, yes, if they aren't doing it safely.

I didn't say they could scoot on grass, did I? Confused

Every park I've ever been in has pathways that kids cycle and scoot along.

idiuntno57 · 12/06/2015 19:36

my four kids (5-10yr) scoot to school every day. It is a two mile journey. They know to move to the side and to stop/slow down when necessary. They do this without fail because they scoot every day and have learnt pavement etiquette.

They get a bit surprised when people see them from afar and sort of panic. I think there is an assumption that kids on scooters will be a nightmare. IMO it is a million times better than tons of cars clogging up the school gates and emitting toxic diesel fumes for a relatively short journey.

ChrisMooseAlbanians · 12/06/2015 19:36

Arrrgggggggggghhhhh scooters in supermarkets drive me INSANE. And those bloody wheely trainer things.

Penfold007 · 12/06/2015 19:39

I was collecting a very frail, elderly friend from St Thomas Hospital in London the other day and had to protect her from kids on scooters inside the hospital. Then a adult male in a suit and carrying a briefcase whizzed past us in the car park. Bit unnerving.

KneeHighScooterBruises · 12/06/2015 19:39

They know to move to the side and to stop/slow down when necessary. They do this without fail because they scoot every day and have learnt pavement etiquette.

The problem is that upwards of 100 kids haven't learned this and they're all going down the same stretch of narrow pavement with their parents, carers or siblings.

And it's dangerous.
