Flight seats with 2yr old

We're taking Ds on a long haul flight with Virgin when he's almost 2. We can prebook our seats and I've just seen that there's an upstairs section of the plane of about 8 economy rows and 6 premium economy rows. WIBU to prebook these seats with a 2yr old? Or is this a genius idea to keep him out of the way and with a bit more room to sit in the floor and spread out?

I've sat up there, it's lovely.

Personally I don't think the upgraded areas or an equivalent area should allow children. If I pay extra to stay in an adult only resort I would like the option to fly (at least in a section of the plane) adult only

That said those ARENT the rules and only my preference as someone without children

If you can afford the upgrade go for it, I've heard upper class virgin is amazing (though not sure how much space there is for dc to play on the floor - having never seen it myself)

wtf did you read the OP at all? She said the seats are economy more than once! Go for it OP good idea.

It's not an upgraded area, or upperclass it's the bubble on a 747 (still economy).

Used to work for Virgin it is nice being upstairs but check with them if a 2 year old is allowed as a passenger has to be physically able to walk down the stairs incase of emergency - enjoy your holiday

actually bitta, if you had read the OP you would have seen that the area she is talking about contains economy and prem economy!

Airlines he really wouldn't allow you to sit baby/toddler on the floor for Heath and Safety reasons. But YANBU for wanting to book upstairs!

Ive never seen a misbehaved child including my 5 young grandchildren in either business or first.

I have seen loads of adults though who think being in business or first really is 'something' and a whole lot more than just a flat bed from A to B. They're very easy to spot. They're usually the ones taking pictures before take off when not on the phone to someone and saying 'oh my god, you'll never guess what its like.

They won't let him sit or sleep on the floor! Used to be allowed years ago but all the flights I've been on recently have made kids stay in their seats all the time.

Thanks everyone for your help. We were more thinking that a calmer atmosphere might help keep Ds calmer for the flight.

They're just economy seats but in a small upstairs section, no upgrade needed. In fact they're cheaper than the extra legroom seats downstairs.

Going to book them today, was going to wait as you have to pay to reserve seats now with Virgin but don't want them to go!

Oh and thanks for the info re extra seats, we've paid for a seat for him already as I didn't fancy a toddler on my lap all the way to the U.S.!

No, just a very honest answer to someone who thinks being in business or first of economy premium is such a big deal that children shouldn't be allowed to access them.

And yes, laughing at someone who's on a parenting forum telling parents children shouldn't be allowed in 'upgraded' areas of the plane. I expect there will be a whole lot of people here who raise their eyebrows at that.

This idea that its only for certain people is ridiculous and I wonder where WTF would draw the line when it comes to who she thinks she be allowed in or not. Would my son who is 24 and severely autistic, and has Tourettes, be allowed in or does she think he might also disturb her?

Flying isn't like the old days anymore and being in business or first or economy premium is about nothing more than being able to pay for it. Its a comfier way of getting from A to B and nothing more.

OP, we've been in the bubble in economy before (south African) and its a much nicer experience. There was a toddler too who slept all night...unlike the inconsiderate pair who talked loudly across the aisle for an entire night flight.... anyway!

Presume it will be the same with virgin but because of the curve of the roof, there's normally a largish storage box (for you) under the window which is a very useful bit of extra space. enjoy!

I have been first class once. It was lovely. And the stewards were fab, food v good and wine superb. Bed was lovely. I did take a pic . The bloke behind me snored and woke me up.

However, it's unlikely to ever happen again. If I was rolling in it, I'd fly first all the time, but we're not. So my kids are likely to be deprived of the experience until they can pay their own way.

My attitude has always been, if you don't want kids on a flight, fly private! Have a great flight and holiday OP. I find the noise of the plane makes toddlers drop off and sleep pretty well. Or maybe mine is just a very good traveller!
