...you are in somebody else's country and your guide has just told you this is a massive cultural no-no in the place where you are?

I mean Malaysians manage to come here and visit places in the UK without shitting on the cenotaph, "how do they do it" etc.

I'm actually annoyed by this, because it doesn't take much to not actively insult somebody else's culture and traditions, and it reflects on us as a country when our kids do this stuff abroad. I want to ramble and rant about what's going on with our young people but the thing that annoys me is that when my kids want to travel, people like these these prats have gone ahead spreading bad will.

I mean it's not exactly a difficult situation to avoid, is it? Am I being too harsh?

I don't really understand what possessed them to do this. I mean, you wouldn't climb Snowdon and take your kit off at the top, would you?

She wasn't a young teenager, she was 24. Ridiculous. I suspect peer pressure played a big part. "Banter" etc

GoringBit · 11/06/2015 23:26

Apparently, tourist naked selfies (and posting them on facebook, of course) are the Latest Big Thing. Hmm

Grin

This guy probably wouldNaked rambler

But, unbelievably, he has already spent about 10 years in prison for just getting his kit off.

Bet their parents are so proud!

Kampeki · 11/06/2015 23:31

More fool them. They should be ashamed of this behaviour.

Notcontent · 11/06/2015 23:34

I don't consider myself that old - I am 40 - but maybe I am, because I just don't understand what you would do that, anywhere... Are there no rules anymore?

I live in Malaysia

While they were obviously stupid and disrespectful, they will have the proverbial book thrown at them because the Malaysian judicial system is fundamentally corrupt.
Also, Malaysian politicians have jumped on this, which is why it is getting so much publicity here, because until the story broke the authorities were getting such a hard time about getting aid to the region. The Prime minister was getting a whole lot of grief because he didn't visit Sabah on 5th June because he was going to the King's birthday celebrations on the 6th. He must be so relieved about this story deflecting away from him.

So blaming naked foreigners for the whole thing is the kind of political nonsense that goes on here. None of them really care about whether the local people have been offended, they just want the blame deflected from them. Sabahans are treated like second class citizens anyway, not a single Malay politician cares about them unless it is to their political advantage.

But YANBU - of course you shouldn't disrespect the local customs and strip off!

What I find offensive is the treatment of this news on BBC radio at least. Totally the opposite of the opinions expressed here, in fact. I think the BBC is getting less and less representative of public opinion.

Unfortunately people think they can do what they want where they want.

When I have gone on holiday to Muslim countries I have always ensured I dress appropriately outside the hotel. When we went to Kenya we were advised to have knees and shoulders covered. While out we saw many people ignoring this.

Last year we went to Egypt and went on a trip that involved visiting mosques and churches and were asked to have knees and shoulders covered again, as this is a requirement in religious establishments. We were the only people on the trip that adhered to this.
