To think it's rude to turn the telly up when you have guests?

This has happened twice in the last week with different friends.
1st friend who I haven't seen in ages, arranged ages ago to Bob round for a coffee and catch up, really looking forward to seeing her and finding out about what she has been up to. Teenage daughter comes in the room after about an hour (they have a separate snug type room and her dd was in when unmarried) plonks herself down, gets the remote, turns on MTV then turns up the volume.
It was very difficult to talk, my friend says nothing, just carries on trying to talk.

2nd friend, last minute thing, I popped.in with a bag of stuff for her, arranged a day or so previously, her dh was in the room, he normally disappears to another room on his gaming thingy, but instead while we were talking, the Simpson's came on so he turned up the volume so we could no longer talk.

OMG it's occurred to me while I was typing that maybe they wanted rid of.me!!!!!!
I can't see that this is the case!! Lol been friends for over 20 years!

Rude yes?

That is really rude, it's the same in our house now dc are older, guests equal TV off, no excuses.

Although when DC were small if I had a friend round I might have put on TV to keep them entertained for 10 mins but it was on low.

tabulahrasa · 10/06/2015 08:53

TV gets paused if someone just turns up...even if it's not me watching it, when the DC were little I might have left it on Cbeebies or something because then it keeps them occupied, but at a volume low enough that conversation is fine.

Dawndonnaagain · 10/06/2015 08:55

It goes off if you have guests, even if they turn up out of the blue. Off. Otherwise it's just rude.

Rude! Yanbu, OP.

Tv off for any guests here, unless it's the in laws. Their tv is left on and turned up no matter who comes. They also ask for ours to be on and just stare at it for their visit. Meh, it saves me having to make conversation with them.

BringMeTea · 10/06/2015 10:28

Very rude indeed. I would be annoyed at my friend aswell as the actual tv turner upper.

jimijack · 10/06/2015 13:33

Just to clarify, teenage daughter was in another room with tv & computer on. Left them both on, came into other room, turned tv on then the volume up.
I am neither loud nor out stay my welcome EVER.

I did leave minutes after both of these scenarios.
Next time I shall arrange for them to pop to me. No blaring tv in my house.

In that case I would agree that your friend should have told her to go back to the other room if she wanted to watch tv, as that wouldn't be at all inconvenient. Also tv on when no-one is watching is very annoying! I would also have told the husband it was too loud.

If your friends aren't usually rude though, I'd just assume they didn't notice the noise. If you're not bothered by background noise then you won't know when other people are unless they say. I often see people cover their ears and look in real pain at a car alarm when I just think it's a bit annoying - either they're all attention seeking or people just vary in their sensitivities. Like my MIL, who cannot eat the mildest of spices.

I would stop watching tv if a friend called round of course, but if we had a separate kitchen and the only tv was in the living room, I wouldn't expect a child or adult to stop what they were doing for me and my visitor, I'd just go and make them coffee in the kitchen so everyone is happy. As our flat has a kitchen/living room all in one it's a bit tricky, but I agree Jimi if they don't just have another room, but another tv it doesn't make sense at all!

Theycallmemellowjello · 10/06/2015 16:23

I don't think that if one person in the house has a guest, it's rude for someone else in the house to watch tv. Ideally it shouldn't be in the same room but some people have small houses. It's annoying if it's loud, but I'd think of it as just the background noise of a busy house - same as you'd have background noise anywhere you went. I have family who have the telly on all the time in the background, including during meals. I hate it myself but for some people (especially the older generation, maybe especially working class people) I think it's normal to have it on in the background.

jimijack · 10/06/2015 16:30

They turned UP the volume over our conversation.
Rude.
