Last night Dd aged 10 had a seizure. Fell to the ground with a twitchy leg and stayed like that unresponsive for three minutes.

I took to A&E by car where we waited four hours to be seen. The doctor then told us A&E not necessary for a first seizure unless it lasts over 5 minutes. She can just go to GP next time.

She really hurt her neck when she fell and had a numb arm.

Seriously, is there any Mumsnet parent who wouldn't have went to A&E?

That dr is talking rubbish of course you go to a&e for a first seizure. There are numerous reasons why a person adult or child would have a seizure and it is an emergency situation.
My ds has epilepsy but in the early days before diagnosis we went to a&e lots of times mainly as he had large clusters of seizures. The only time I now call 999 is if I have to give him his emergency medication and it hasnt worked.

I'm a nurse and I would have gone too. YANBU.

Paeds doc...would have gone to A&E as well. There's stuff that needs testing for after a first fit.

A few months back, Dh collapsed in the street after a strenuous spin bike session and had a fit of some sort. We went home and pondered what to do before eventually deciding to go to A&E. We didn't want to, it was a Saturday afternoon and we had better things to do.

The consultant was horrified and said we should have called an ambulance.

CookPassBabtrigde · 09/06/2015 19:22

I would have without doubt gone to A&E. Especially for a first seizure, wouldn't everyone? It must have been really scary OP. Hope she's ok Flowers

Biggles398 · 09/06/2015 19:25

I can't think of anyone who wouldn't go to A&E with their child if it was their first seizure with an otherwise healthy child?
Hope your daughter's ok now.

Please report that Dr. Being stressed is no excuse for that. I honestly think this a no brainier and his attitude is completely unacceptable.

theflyingpig · 09/06/2015 19:36

Maybe not "right" as such but not unreasonable either, imo. The minute you get to A&E they assess the urgency of your case. Someone with a very minor injury would never stop a generously injured person from being seen.

Dd had a fit 2 weeks ago. We took her to a and e where she was admitted for observations. We have since had an mri scan and eeg. I actually asked the paediatrician what we should do if it happens again and were told we should go to a and e so that they can try and build up a pattern of events.

MrsTedCrilly · 09/06/2015 19:41

Definitely would have gone too OP, you can't be too careful with this stuff. Some drs think we're all as clued up as them..

JammyGeorge · 09/06/2015 20:01

I would of dialled 999 no hesitation.

Carrie5608 · 09/06/2015 22:50

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. Dd has been absolutely fine today. I will definitely take her back if I need too.
