you don't start a bonfire at 4pm on a sunny day, especially not sunday

My asbo type pensioner neighbour below me, has just started a bonfire. All the house windows were open, I was enjoying being in the garden and I had washing on the line.

Now my washing stinks, house stinks and can't sit in my garden.I know I'm nbu, is there a law against this?

Is this neighbours with the trees?

It doesn't sound very pleasant but I have limited sympathy for someone who refers to an "asbo style pensioner"

There isn't a "law". Have you looked on your council website? There's usually info about what they recommend and it varies from council to council. It's pretty antisocial of him but then I'm not sure there's ever a good time to have one if you live in an urban environment?

Oh, does he actually have an ASBO? Is it to do with bonfires?

Wonder if you live near us, we have had to shut all windows and doors and stay inside so it doesn't kick my asthma off

Does this also apply to BBQs? Because I'm just about to light ours .

I like peace and quiet - me neighbour is cleaning his car and playing the radio - on the other side the kids are on the trampoline and the BBQ is on the go

The local rumour is he has an asbo for hitting children with his cane that played in his front lawn. Doesn't matter how old anyone is, just giving reference to the character. Very much a live lived here 60 years so I trump everyone else and can do as I please type.

This is on a par with people in pubs complaining because they can smell the cigarette smoke from outside whenever the outside door opens. (I don't smoke.)

YANBU. For a bonfire at this time of year I would say much before 7pm is a bit U and before 5pm I'd be going round to have a polite word.

Kill him when you kill his trees. Or whatever the story was. Just kill everyone. Job done.

Its really annoying especially on a sunny day but theres not much you can do unless this is a regularly recurring activity unfortunately.

Take the washing in ,close the windows that are affected and try to ignore . Thats the best way all round .Anything else will just escalate and you may end up being the loser.

Our neighbour in a row of closely-packed South London semis, for god's sake was happily stoking their bonfire at 11 am this morning, as I hung out my washing (yes, I'm a slattern; my mother would have a fit if she knew).

I was peeved. Last time I cat-sit one of their scrawny moggies!

I live opposite an estate and it looks like they're having a little party on their green with booming music and a bouncy castle. Pretty annoying when I want some quiet peace!

My neighbour has started a fire too, I'm not pleased. No warning. All windows now shut, washing stinks and we cannot use our garden. Cheers mate.

You can't compare a whiff of cigarette smoke from a beer garden, or barbecues on a sunny afternoon, to a bonfire IMO. The volume of smoke is dramatically higher and the kinds of things burnt on a bonfire often produce foul-smelling smoke. I've come across bonfires you could smell a twenty minute walk away (yes, really - one of the big million-pound houses with grounds to clear, and some particularly damp smoky garden waste). I've also struggled with breathing within 100m or so of some bonfires. Unless you're quite isolated I feel they are pretty much always antisocial.

Anyway they should save it up for bonfire night

YANBU. Bonfires in urban environments should be banned in the summer months if not all year round.
