fuming for being sent a bill for an imaginary speeding ticket

Renewed my insurance last month. When doing the quotes I did one for a made up 3 points for speeding just to see how much it would affect it. Obviously didn't buy this one. Finally bought one and clicked all the boxes to say everything is true.

Today I receive a bill for 80 pounds because the car insurance people have found another quote where I had a speeding fine, so they've assumed the policy I bought is incorrect so without even asking me or the dvla have adjusted it and sent me a letter to say they will be taking this extra money from my card!

Seriously what are they on? I will have to call an expensive number mon-fri probably wage loads of money and time to fix this ridiculous assumption they've made!

Ooh I did this.. caused no end of hassle. Like you I wanted to see what would happen if I got in a accident that was my fault.

Took 2 letters to get it sorted. I had to get a letter from the previous insurance company saying I had no accidents in the past year. Nightmare will never do that again!

Ah alphabet they are nobs aren't they!

They are the ones wanting to charge us more, it should be on them to prove we have points!

Hopefully I'm within the cooling off period and can cancel the insurance.

what ilovesooty said, i play around with the excess and occupation and so on, as DH's is never actually listed on there, but i have never listed a conviction neither of us has.

DisappointedOne · 07/06/2015 10:15

Certainly they would have pulled your driving record before they sold you the policy, wouldn't they? If the points are not on your license, they're not on your license.

I'm not aware of a single insurer that does this.

pettywitchinlondon · 07/06/2015 10:42

I'm quite shocked at the amount of people that think I'm in the wrong for getting a quote to see how much a speeding fine costs. Billionaire business owners would be proud of you.

I've just read the t and c of the comparison website and all details sent on there are purely for the use of providing a quote. The insurancers are clearly in the wrong and in breach of the data privacy act.

I will be raising this illegal activity with the watchdog.

ive constantly played with the car insurance quotes and i haven't even passed my test yet i need to know if they type of car im looking to buy will be affordable and if i can pay monthly or if i need to save more money to pay outright

they are making worry now i will be charged for all these quotes

Petty - I wonder if you could get some back up from one of the newspaper problem pages or money saving expert - this is a policy that needs to be changed.

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 07/06/2015 10:58

What a strange thing to do. Why would you need to know how it would affect you until you got a ticket.

Aridane · 07/06/2015 10:59

Hi, OP

YEs, this does sound strange...

Try 1) Admiral / confused.com first to rectify - and, if that deson't get you anywhere, 2) the Financial Ombudsman Service = insurance complaints regulator or 3) Information Commissioner (data protection regulator).

Note though that you have to go through Admiral's complaints process before the FOS will entertain your complaint...

ChunkyPickle · 07/06/2015 11:07

It's a quote! You can say anything you like for a quote, no laws broken, no lies told - I've tried quotes all sorts of ways for imaginary cars/houses when idling on my laptop.

If OP'd lied on the actual policy that would be different, but it's just an auto-generated quote.

It feels dodgy that they might use it to adjust your existing insurance, this feels like a mis-use but I don't know if it's actually illegal. It's not on to take money without just asking you first - as we've seen here, plenty of people play with these things.

OrlandoWoolf · 07/06/2015 11:51

I've altered quotes - just to see the effect.

Male or female...

Makes a difference of about £30.

LurkingHusband · 07/06/2015 13:02

Sounds like you tripped the anti-fraud engine all insurers now use online. Things will improve when the DVLA database connection is available, and license numbers can be checked in real time.
