To have cried whilst ordering the last Discworld novel

Because it struck me; this is it, last one, no more, end of the line Sad Ordered the hard cover one with the dust cover, gorgeous. How will I ever live without them?

YANDBU.

When my dad died, DH stood in a book queue for ages to get me books signed by TP. He explained what had happened to me, that my dad died on my 21st birthday, and he wrote a short message in each one for me.

It helped so much that someone so witty and wise took their precious time to make me feel better, and now I can never say thank you for that.

I don't know how I can read the last book, but I must.

I believe he wanted Rhianna to take over writing his books, but she didn't want to, I can understand why. He did ask her to write for the TV series of the Night's Watch, and I hope she will do that. It won't be the same though Sad.

Agreed, I have no issue with someone else adapting them as long as they get Sir TP and who else better. She'll stop anyone removing Death from Mort as I'm sure Sir TP once said an American production company wanted to do.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/06/2015 16:05

YADEFINITELY NBU.

I will too. I cried on and off for several days when he died; every time I saw the threads on here, in fact. And again on May 25th.

I have all his Discworld books, and some of the others - and am heartbroken that there will be no more. :(

FiveExclamations · 07/06/2015 17:29

My kitchen drawer got just got stuck and I prayed to the Goddess Anoia, what a legacy...

Idontseeanydragons · 07/06/2015 17:40

Cardigansforwinners that's a lovely image Smile
I read an interview with Rhiannon Pratchett a while ago in Metro saying that she is working on the Night Watch series (she called it a type of CSI: Ankh Morpock Grin) and the Mew Tomb Raider game. That was around 18 months ago though and not seen anything since.

Idontseeanydragons · 07/06/2015 17:44

Rhianna sorry Blush
And I am talking bollocks, there are loads of rumours online but not much concrete

QueenStromba · 07/06/2015 18:05

She said on her Twitter recently that she won't be writing any more books (or allowing anyone else to) as they were precious to her dad but that she will be getting involved in adaptations etc.

FyreFly · 07/06/2015 18:11

When my cousin was younger, my uncle took him to get a book signed by Sir Terry. My uncle asked Terry to tell my cousin though that he must read it in bits and not sneakily read all of it under the covers after lights out.

Sir Terry replied that he would do no such thing Grin

I have not ordered the book. When it comes out I may consider buying it from my local book shop, but like someone upthread has already said, I think I will hold off reading it... There will always be One Last Book!

Discworld101 · 07/06/2015 18:12

I simultaneously can't wait and am dreading the new book - once it's read, that's it Sad

I haven't pre-ordered it yet either. All the other ones I was on it as soon as I got the email; this one...

WhenMarnieWasThere · 07/06/2015 18:16

Preordered.

With a lump in my throat.

Not only have I been an avid reader of his fabulous books since The Light Fantastic came out, but they've always come out just in time to make a birthday present for my DDad. He's loved the books as much as I have, and we've had some funny conversations sharing the books.

Dad has an aggressive form of cancer that isn't responding well to chemo and is not operable. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he will still be around to read the last book when it comes out.

Sad times. Sad

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 07/06/2015 20:29

Marnie Flowers I really hope he pulls through and gets to read Shepherd's Crown

It's not that I think the characters are gone, they're all still there, I just wish as others have said that I could read about Young Sam growing up, whether Carrot ever has to keep his promise to Angua, whether Moist really was being groomed to replace the Patrician, whether Tiffany eventually becomes a witch as great as Granny Weatherwax, whether CMOT Dibbler ever finds that one last great business plan that means he shall never again inflict his wares on the unsuspecting....

I cried as it wasn't just him dying but sam vines, captain carrot, the unseen university, granny weatherwatch, nanny ogg etc, etc, etc.

This. So this. ^^ And I'm crying again because this expresses exactly how I feel; that they've all been cut off in their prime... It's a sort of mass mourning (both for all of them and all of us Sad )

Somewhere out there in the Everett - Wheeler continua, the Archchancellor is investing the new Professor of Narrativium Studies. Gown, mortarboard, omniscope, Hex terminal.

"Not exactly what I was expecting, Mustrum".

"Least we could do, old chap. We've been looking over your shoulder for a while now, as you've been looking over ours. Young Stibbons says it's all about recursing".

" Recursion , Archchancellor".

"Turtles all the way down, eh? Anyway, got plenty of ink? Plenty of coal? Good man, dinner's in 10 minutes".

BelleOfTheBoys · 07/06/2015 21:24

I can't do it. I just can't order the last one.

Maybe I'll buy The Colour Of Magic in hardback and just try to string it all out for another 20 years...

Yep. Totally. I just can't get my head around the enormity of it. It's kind of how Douglas Adams describes how Arthur Dent can't imagine the Earth destroyed, but Can begin to get cross at the destruction of Lords Cricket ground.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 07/06/2015 22:41

Aww Drumknott, beautifully put.

I tried to read it out to dh but I've got such a lump in my throat that I'll probably cry.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/06/2015 23:11

As its a Tiffany book I may get it for DD at Xmas - the Tiffany ones are on her bookshelves along with Maurice, and also the bromeliad trilogy and the Johnny ones.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 07/06/2015 23:20

Disgrace That made me Smile

MsAdorabelle Thank you Blush I was in denial about their stories being at an end until I ordered the book. DP, who is a Pratchett fan, looked at me like Hmm when I burst in to tears over it. He prefers the earlier books and never took to Moist, as it were, so hasn't continued with the more recent stories, which is why he doesn't quite get my mourning their loss. takes refuge in some if the more respectable pieces of fan fiction to help with the mourning process

HerrenaHarridan · 07/06/2015 23:30

:(

ErrolTheDragon · 07/06/2015 23:41

Maybe some fan fiction could be seen as a product of the strange workings of L-space? (Ive not read any myself)

GoringBit · 08/06/2015 00:09

I have to ask, did he know, when writing it, that it would be his last book?

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 08/06/2015 09:02

Errol Yes! That is the excuse I will be using from now on Grin

Goring I haven't seen anything to confirm either way

Coffee and Fyre Thank you for those tales. Classic PTerry Grin

I got the feeling with Raising Steam that he probably knew that was the penultimate - it seemed to reference a lot of the characters from the past except for the witches. Presumably they will figure in the new one.

BrittaTheNeedlesslyDefiant · 08/06/2015 09:44

There are very few friends I've had from my teens until now and Terry is one of them

This is beautiful, and I feel the same way.
