To think it's ridiculous that the council cant provide a bigger recycling bin...

But they can afford to replant the copius flower beds and hanging baskets in the area every new season.

I know it's two different departments, but it's all the same council.

I rang up today to see if I can get a bigger, or another recycling bin, as for the past few months our recycling bin has been overflowing (as in 2 or 3 extra boxes next to the wheelie bin) by the time of our fortnightly collection, while the rubbish bin is only half full. We're a 4 person family, so we can't be the only ones with this problem. They told me they no longer provide larger bins as they don't have the money, so we need to put the extra recycling in white bin bags (more rubbish) or boxes. Ignoring the fact that we have limited space and our neighbours have commented on the overflowing boxes in the bin area.

Obviously we just need to get another rubbish bin to put it all in and take the White bags out on bin day, but Aibu to think that their priorities are a bit messed up if they can afford thousands of plants but not bigger recycling bins for those that need them? They also don't provide food waste disposal facilities, but that's another discussion!

I asked before about recycling and general rubbish. If our area you need to be a family of 5 to get the bigger or second bin. I offered to pay but nope. So now the rubbish goes in whatever bin has space as the council also moan if we leave black bags/clear bags of rubbish outside.

We live in a small community on the edge of a town. We don't get any recycling bins, just one ordinary refuse bin which is emptied weekly. We have to recycle by taking everything to the recycling facility in town.

My DH has contacted the council many times about getting recycling bins. The steading at the bottom of our road (but on a council maintained road) has them so we know the lorries come along to collect there. Our 30 or so houses are on a private road which the council claims is "not suitable" for the bin lorries. Hmm This road is fine for the normal bin lorry, and for the many council vans which go up to maintain the park nearby, and delivery lorries and tractors which go up and down regularly. I

t is all such bollocks. Our road is better maintained than the council maintained roads and it is wide enough for two cars to pass, and there is a massive turning area at the top.

Councils, in my opinion, just say whatever they want to suit their own ends. As long as they are meeting their recycling targets they don't care that your bins isn't big enough or that we are inconvenienced by not having any recycling bins.

I don't know how to change it though or have any solutions for you OP.

My council has green bags for recycling, you can have as many as you want and a food waste bucket. Also green bins for garden waste. In July we are going from 240l rubbish bins to 140l to encourage more recycling, I can't think of one single thing that goes into my rubbish bin that can be recycled. ANYONE want 90,000 black rubbish bins second hand ? The other areas that had black bags are having red and white bags but only 3 a fortnight and you will not be able to buy them or put rubbish in any other container. All this is going to cost 2.2 million even though our council was 86million in debt. It will lead to more flytipping which we council tax payers will have to pay for. I think that the 50,000 students we have in this city should have to pay for rubbish collection and be fined if they don't recycle.

Absolutely shocked that some people have NO recycling service! That's awful!

I've just gone and got into our recycling and had a good stamp Grin it's reduced it by about a third so that's pretty good! Thanks for the suggestion! Although I'm slightly worried that it's not so compacted it'll never come out!

At least you have a bin. We've got pathetic little boxes that hold hardly anything. I don't particularly want yet another bin but. I'm fed up of having bin bags full of recycling in our tiny garden for the best part of two weeks. Our closest recycling centre is over a mile away and I don't drive so can't really take any myself so I'm stuck with it lying around between collections.

There's six of us so quite a lot of recycling, mostly milk bottles and food packaging which we can't do anything about. I'd happily pay for a bin but we're not allowed. It's horrible when it's windy on collection day as the contents of the boxes go everywhere and it just gets left by the majority of people.

It's ridiculous how provisions varies among local authorities. We have recycling bins and can order additional ones online for free. However, garden waste now has to be paid for in order to be recycled and we can't recycle black plastic (unlike in the borough of Ealing where garden waste was taken for free and all plastics were recyclable Confused).

ThomasRichard · 05/06/2015 14:34

Our council brought in a scheme a few years ago where you can order giant stickers to swap the general waste and recycling bins. So the bigger general waste bin becomes the recycling bin and the smaller recycling bin becomes the general waste bin. Maybe you could make this suggestion to your local council?

Floggingmolly · 05/06/2015 14:35

You can't really have two bins, though. You can technically; but round our way they insist on putting one bin back, no matter how many they took in the first place.

It's a right pain in the arse.

Justusemyname · 05/06/2015 14:42

We have fortnightly collections, a green box for paper and tins, green bin for food and garden waste and a grey bin for rubbish. We have to drive to take the plastic and glass to the recycling place and when i did that last week discovered they are being removed. I'll have to drive further now. A nearby council area takes plastic at the road side. Ours takes paper and cans only so we have to take glass and plastic. We have been given two bags for garden waste as our bin was full and we had used black sacks for the overspill. We could get another bin we wanted.

KittyLovesPaintingOhYes · 05/06/2015 14:46

Don't worry, it always comes out even when you climb in and stamp on it Grin We have a standard size recycling wheelie and a tiddly half-size general waste, and with four of us this is a regular fortnightly ritual, we keep a special bit of wood for bashing the bags into the bin with!

Our council has stopped emptying the green garden waste bins unless you pay extra, but hasn't taken them away - thinking of charging them rent...

I used to live on a road the bin lorries couldn't get down, we still got the full service, we were just expected to drag all our crap to the end of the road every week. Some councils are just making excuses.

LurkingHusband · 05/06/2015 14:49

Our council (which is wheelie bin free) has quite a relaxed attitude to recycling, and not too arsey about boxes/bags. So as a rule we put all our paper recycling into a cardboard box (never a shortage of those with MrsLHs medical deliveriesd) and leave that out. We oput all our tins/crushed cans/bottles and plastic into an old carrier bag, and when that's full tie it up and use another. When it's collection time we tie those into a big bundle and leave them next to the black bags.

RandomMess · 05/06/2015 14:49

We have 3 small boxes for recycling every fortnight, not allowed more and there are 6 of us...

Driving me crazy!

5madthings · 05/06/2015 14:59

Our council are happy rotate extra recycling, bur not rubbish. They also gave us a larger bin no problem. Ours still gets too full, I tens to get one of the bigger madthings to climb in and jump up and down/stamp on it. Also squash everything before putting it in. Despite being squashed in it still all comes out. Dh did worked on the bins when we were students, if rubbish is sick there is a button that make the lifted up bin sort of shake about and the rubbish does come out.

timelyreminder · 05/06/2015 15:01

YABU to blame it on the plants, which will brighten up dull areas for many people.

GatoradeMeBitch · 05/06/2015 15:43

In my area you used to be able to buy a regular sized green bin, or a large. They've done away with both now, and only stock 'slimline' bins. We can cope, we don't use a lot of packaging these days, but it must be a struggle for families f four and over.
