Got Lego Catalogue today. Looking through at all the exciting and colourful stuff for boys. Got to the Lego Friends page. Looking at the nice plane, check the figures.........

FLIGHT ATTENDANT SANDRA and PILOT DAVID. WTAF! Why is the pilot a bloke?!

Did no one at Lego has the wit to say 'errr women can be pilots'?

AIBU to be seriously unimpressed by this? Makes me bloody cross.

Crusts you are the only person to mention being inferior.

I just don't understand why Lego didn't just extend the City range to include the vomit inducing Friends range. Then children would see it as a toy rather than a girls toy.

HermioneWeasley · 04/06/2015 21:55

undoubtedly I had 2 action men and countless Sindys and Barbies. My action men saw a LOT of action! (My sex education all came from Dynasty)

undoubtedly · 04/06/2015 21:56

I've just noticed "I need the pilot to be male"

You're either a troll or a twat. I'm going to bed now because luckily I don't have to care which it is.

changeshow · 04/06/2015 21:58

sorry undoubtedly, I was joking, to illustrate how crazy it was. I forgot the [hmmm] face.

Why should a toy that is made for a broad market where female pilots are few and far between have one? Its a damn toy. If women want to be pilots im sure they will, then the toy will show one.

JassyRadlett · 04/06/2015 22:01

Some jobs just remain that way they are due to most boys liking things like that and girls not so

Interesting. What's your reasoning for why this genetic programming is much more evident in British children than in children elsewhere?

It fucking does my head in that lego in this country is seen as 'mostly a boys toy' to quote one poster.

crustsaway · 04/06/2015 22:03

I also like my British culture and not sure why you would want to knock it.

chippednailvarnish · 04/06/2015 22:04

Seems that Lego used to be more forward thinking...

What culture are we talking about here then Jassy? Tell me about your "culture".

changeshow · 04/06/2015 22:06

Lego have bought dinosaurs back to life but they can't have a female pilot because it has to be a refection of reality.......

What the actual fuck?

T-Rex yes. Pilot Sandra NO, you are going TOO FAR.

arrghhhh made myself cross again.

It's a bit hard to make one figure representative of the entire population. What about their whole range?

changeshow · 04/06/2015 22:07

Sad for the advert. Girls aren't allowed to look like that in adverts now.

Because the interplay between cultural expectations and daily life is a two-way street! Because toys showing girls that girls are flight attendants shapes the expectations they have of themselves. Culture doesn't just reflect reality, it shapes it.

Read Delusions of Gender.

CinderellaRockefeller · 04/06/2015 22:10

They've released two planes. Pilot is a boy in one, girl in the other. Although hopefully it is pretend water she's drinking, not vodka.

crustsaway · 04/06/2015 22:10

No need to read delusions of gender, I don't have any Grin I have a huge sense of fair play and don't get bent out of shape over a toy, nor their ads. Buy the friggin thing if you want, don't buy it if not.

standingonlego · 04/06/2015 22:10

Not lego....but I have to add this to the pink toy hall of shame

An assumption that young boys read the catalogues the most is far more sexist than a toy that has a man doing a job that lots of men do, as is the idea that because a toy is for a girl, only female characters should be represented in it. So, in order for my children to not be restricted to outdated gender expectations, I need to pretend that men don't exist?

crustsaway · 04/06/2015 22:11

what a lovely colour, you'd probably moan if it was blue Grin

Fromparistoberlin73 · 04/06/2015 22:13

Correct me if I am wrong but lego sales are booming - and lego friends is hugely popular - so clearly there is a huge demand - what's the incentive for them to change ? None

That said - I have ds not dd - had I dd i would get more riled

My all time favourite customer review page for Bic for Her...

www.amazon.co.uk/BiC-For-Her-Medium-Ballpoint/dp/B004FTGJUW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Including classics like;
Q: I am a man. Is it safe to use this pen?
A: No - definately not. It will either shatter in your powerful hands, or cause you to get your period.

workhouse · 04/06/2015 22:13

This has made me so cross I could spit. Friends Lego is an abomination, even my 11 year old son would recognise this as being sexist CRAP.

Why why why, could they not have made the pilot a woman. As someone very succinctly put up thread, Lego isn't exactly realistic anyway.

I have been walking around recently, with my DD aged 17, who has just finished her As level exams. When people ask her what subjects she does, and she says Maths, people invariably go oooh, with a surprised face, it makes us mad.

Fromparistoberlin73 · 04/06/2015 22:14

But surprised though - expected better from the Danes

stolemyusername · 04/06/2015 22:14

Hovis But the point is that Lego have gendered this toy, pretty explicitly...

This made me snigger more than I care to admit. Perhaps I am too childish to appreciate the issue.

Surely though in real life children are exposed to the fact that people are male or female generally? Regardless of them being a pilot, shop assistant, police they are usually make or female? These are toys, I wouldn't have an issue with my DC playing with any toy, it's really only the parents who introduce gender specific rules. My DC never saw a girls/boys aisle in toy shops, just a Lego/dolls/cars etc aisle.

HoVis2001 · 04/06/2015 22:14

crusts

Just thought you might be interested in some actual, evidence-based research into those essential differences between men and women that you're so confident exist.

Fromparistoberlin73 · 04/06/2015 22:15

Why is chipped screaming at crusty ? Stop fucking asking her what her job is - just cos she does not agree don't bully her ffs
