To think folk don't nick washing off lines

We've let the laundry slide so two loads tonight...and in the absence of enough space on the airer, I check the forecast and peg the second load out. Two sheets, a couple of towels and a (cheap) pair of DH's underpants. DH pulls a face and says he'll get it in as it'll most likely be nicked otherwise. AIBU to think my OCD DH is off his rocker?

As a child we had stuff stolen from our washing line
As did most of the neighbours
A group of travellers had just arrived so my mum was convention nced it was them, as were the rest of the neighbours
It never happened again after they left
I have had underwear stolen by someone who was later arrested when we lived in married quarters
I know people who have had designer sports wear stolen when I lived in the NE
It does happen
Guess it depends how desperate people are

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 04/06/2015 14:06

I say that as my sister had the lid stolen off of her wheelie bin.

jeee · 04/06/2015 14:07

When I was a student I had all my bras nicked off the washing line. The police laughed at me when I reported it.

Str1p3yl3af · 04/06/2015 14:07

Oh god I'm laughing so much at this:

We had loads of washing stolen off the line in our back garden a few years ago - enough to claim on insurance. The stuff left behind was mainly mine. I was a bit offended...

We had stuff stolen off a line at my mums house that was left out overnight. It was football shirts and other branded stuff like nike, so I think towels might be ok :) and your DHs undercrackers should definitely be ok!! I do it now, but we've a 6 foot gate, no one can see into the garden and it's surrounded by other peoples gardens so I take my chances to avoid using the tumble dryer!

Who on earth would steal washing from a washing line Shock ?

curlyweasel · 04/06/2015 14:15

Who on earth would steal washing from a washing line?

Thieves would be my guess.

Str1p3yl3af · 04/06/2015 14:18

'Thieves would be my guess' Grin

This is mumsnet at its best. Sorry but this is hilarious.

But a very real crime.

Str1p3yl3af · 04/06/2015 14:20

Luckily he was given a nighttime curfew.

bastard

ouryve · 04/06/2015 14:20

Some people would steal anything. Used to have my washing machine in an outhouse. I put a load on, once and went into the house to get something. Ended up taking longer than I thought and when I went back, someone had stolen 2 big tubs of detergent and a kilo bag of hamster food.

Suggesting that no one would steal washing off a line is like suggesting that no one would steal charity bags. If it's easy to nick and you could get a couple of quid for it, it's fair game, to some people.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 04/06/2015 14:20

Shock shocked so many people have had washing stolen! Mine is often left out overnight.

ouryve · 04/06/2015 14:21

curly :o

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 04/06/2015 14:21

Str1p3yl3af Not pegs in hand. Poor pegs on the line with nothing to do and you point at the empty space with your best sadface on.

Str1p3yl3af · 04/06/2015 14:21

Oh yes. Always pointing.

Owllady · 04/06/2015 14:21

I live in the country and have had stuff stolen :(

MissMooMoo · 04/06/2015 14:36

wow I didnt know this happened! !!
I often peg mine out at night before bed so it dries when the sun rises at 5. it is always dry when I get up at 7, hope it doesn't get nicked in the future! !!

curlyweasel · 04/06/2015 14:42

I live in the country and have had stuff stolen

Heaven forefend! Thieves are thieves, are thieves, are thieves... whether burglar, snurge, sheet rustler or whatever. People are dicks.

Owllady · 04/06/2015 14:45

I meant off the line Blush

I mentioned the country bit as its open gardens so easier to Nick I suppose

I'm more worried about the rats at the moment though Angry

TranmereRover · 04/06/2015 14:48

you do sometimes get those amazing news stories about rogue tom cats or dogs who go walkabout and steal knickers off washing lines.

curlyweasel · 04/06/2015 14:49

I was only joshing Owl. I don't think main roads, or towns or living in country has anything to do with it.

We're all at the mercy of shitheads who think they can steal our stuff.

I've been burgled twice. I don't care about the stuff. I care that someone thinks they are entitled to take MY belongings, that I paid for. I care that they saw I obviously had fuck all, but took the little that I had any way. I care that DDs toys were nicked.

Horrible bastards.

ActiviaYoghurt · 04/06/2015 14:51

my Mum had laundry stolen, it was fancy knickers,

MonstrousRatbag · 04/06/2015 14:52

From the knicker nicker link:

"Wilde, who was held after being spotted in a passageway acting suspiciously in Welshpool..."

For some reason this bit is really making me laugh!

ditherydora · 04/06/2015 14:53

according to a friend of mine who is a criminal lawyer it does happen. some like to specialise in women's underwear of course - a knicker nicker!

CatthiefKeith · 04/06/2015 15:05

I lost a gorgeous Animal dress of a hostel washing line in Australia.

My dm had 6 mastectomy bras nicked off her line last summers. Her garden is completely enclosed, and very few people are aware that she has had surgery. Go figure.
