To think its UR to be able to do this without my consent?

Long and short. ExDP, 'A', and I living together until we break our lease. A pays the gas and electric. When we get the bills they are adressed to both of us. I never once spoke with this company nor have I had anything to do with them. When A set up the account/payments he just decided to put my name on the account too. How can they do this without my knowledge or consent? For all they know I could be anyone, how do they know I even live in the property and use the ultilities?

If A was for whatever reason to decide not to pay the bill I assume they would come after me as I am named on the account? But I never gave my permission for this. Is it just me or is it UR that this is possible? Confused

Why is he not on the council tax? All adults in the property should be.

In my last rented place the agents gave the utility companies our names.

ThatBloodyWoman · 03/06/2015 16:22

I believe this could be in your favour.
When you split, and you need utilities in your sole name, you will have a proven track record of payment.

He isn't on the council tax?

So you are getting single person's discount?

Not necessarily - the council tax bill comes in my name because I set it up, but we pay full whack.

mileend2bermondsey · 03/06/2015 16:25

redsky that might be an explanation actually.

We pay regular concil tax, not single persons discount. I told the bloke on the phone who dealt with it that we were 2 people, 2 people named on the lease etc. He said A needed to ring/organise himself to be registered at the property but he could never be arsed so didnt.

Having lived in a variety of shared houses, any bill you are on jointly with other people can have your name removed from it without stopping the utility or their connection to the billing, just by phoning the company up and asking to be removed.

There is something in law about if you benifited from using that utility then they can claim money from you whether or not your name is on the bill

Use this to your advantage as you should have an excellent credit rating

It's a moot point whether you're named on the account anyway.

this is from the CAB website: Anyone who is legally responsible for the property can be pursued for an energy debt if the person whose name is on the bill doesn't pay it.
