So this morning after dtd, DP and I realised that the condom had split (probably because it was a year or so old which I hadn't realised). I'm not on the pill or any other form of contraceptive so this now means I need to get the morning after pill, fine. Except our local sexual health clinic is only open on Wednesdays from 5-7pm... Why a Wednesday???? And I can never get a doctors appointment for blood nor money and there's literally no other family planning clinics etc. around locally everywhere would be a pricey train ticket or a 30 min drive into a busy town. I couldn't get anywhere on time anyway due to work. My only option is to buy it which is fine, I know I'm not owed it free. But my town has a huge school and college in it so AIBU to think that somewhere with plenty of young, sexually active people should have far more accessibility to a family planning or GUM clinic? And what about people who can't afford the costly £25 for a morning after pill? What would they do? Is it like this where you are??

I wouldn't take it for free because it's my responsibility and I can afford it. I hate the idea that if you can find a way to get something free on the NHS you should, the NHS is completely overwhelmed with cost at the moment.

There just isn't the money available for more access to specialist clinics. Its not open a few hours a week because its been decided thats all people want, but because thats all they can manage.

Walk in clinics offer it too. I noticed a sign in Asda pharmacy yesterday mentioning them doing it

MistressChalk · 01/06/2015 18:26

I went to get it at supermarket pharmacy during lunch, cost £28 and I did ask if they provided the free service and the very helpful pharmacist said they didn't and he wished they would (or at least sold it cheaper) as he knew how hard it Was to get emergency appointments at my GP centre and agreed the nearest sexual health clinic was miles away. Apparently it's a local authority thing and they decide whether to put the scheme into local pharmacies. The more I think of it though it's not just getting emergency contraception, we are always told to get checked out regularly and visit sexual health clinics etc. but if there's only one locally available one night a week for 2 hours what would people do? Wait weeks for a GP appointment or visit A&E (ridiculous) which is only accessible by driving 40 minutes or taking 3 buses and a walk. To clarify, it wasn't that I had trouble or gripe getting MAP, I was commenting on how much trouble it must be for people who don't have a car or a lot of money to spare.

There are loads of places you can get it for free. The reason you don't know this is because you're not part if the vulnerable demograph who needs to be able to get the MAP for free. Hope you get everything sorted ok Smile
