Posting here for traffic.
I was preparing tomorrow's dinner and as i was cooking the meat, it got me thinking about animal testing.
grim in so many ways, i know.
i think its really time for me to seek out cosmetic products that are not tested on animals.
going vegetarian is another day's work but i'm keen to know any cruelty free brand names that MN folk can recommend.
thanks.

Urban decay are owned by L'Oreal I think so unlikely to be vegan but happy to be corrected.

mileend2bermondsey · 29/05/2015 20:27

saskia if the company sells thier cosmetics in China they are not crulety free as Chinese legislation dictates all cosmetics must be tested on animals.
Urban decay for example are vegan as they withdrew their products from the Chinese market and refuse to sell there until the law is changed.

Molton Brown have recently achieved leaping bunny status if you're looking for high end stuff

Rattitude · 29/05/2015 20:40

I was about to recommend Pure Nuff Stuff but sparechange has beaten me to it.

It is excellent value for money. You can get very cheap samples and request customised products too.

Waitrose sell cruelty free household products.

Winterjoy · 29/05/2015 21:20

Readily available on the high street - M&S own brand is cruelty free and contains lots of reasonably priced lines, and I believe they only carry cruelty free external brands.

Waitrose were recently awarded the Leaping Bunny for their own brand products - am using a lovely shampoo/conditioner from there at the moment.

Superdrug own brand products are Leaping Bunny certified (have saved a fortune over last few years since swapping many of my 'branded' toiletries for superdrug dupes!). And they stock GOSH which has become my 'go-to' brand for foundation and mascara since going cruelty free - without a doubt I found make-up the hardest transition (former die-hard MaxFactor devotee here!). I have had success with many of the Barry M nail polishes, although find the finish can be hit and miss depending on the colour.

Holland and Barrett stock lots of cruelty free toiletry lines.

You can even pick up cruelty free goodies with the weekly shop - Sainsburys own brand personal care products are certified.

Interesting info here about how big brands get around admitting to testing: www.uncaged.co.uk/animaltesting.htm

This part especially stuck with me "If you look at a product that makes no mention of animal testing - be suspicious. If a company can make a claim, no matter how meaningless, they usually will." Very true!

Since opening my eyes and researching a little my mind absolutely boggles that now, in 2015, these testing practices continue and are largely accepted as the 'norm'.

Good luck on your cruelty free mission OP

I thought probably incorrectly that whilst the final products are not tested on animals, many of the ingredients were?

icelollycraving · 29/05/2015 21:41

Years ago yes, historically many ingredients would have been.

corgiology · 29/05/2015 22:24

Astonish for all cleaning supplies.

It's cheap, amazing and ethical!

corgiology · 29/05/2015 22:26

Also Sainsburys has a wide range of own brand toiletries not tested on animals.

So it doesn't have to mean it is more expensive!

poppym12 · 29/05/2015 22:50

household items you can be sure of are co-op own brand, m & s own brand and astonish.

i'm very particular about cruelty free make up as many companies use the 'we do not test on animals unless required to by law'. all of these companies are off my approved list as their response to the cruelty free question is so fluffy. plus, many parent companies do test on animals so although a particular brand may say that they are cruelty free, they could be owned by one of the companies that do test.

not sure what kind of make-up you prefer price-wise but all superdrug own brand is cruelty free (toiletries too) and carries the leaping bunny symbol. barry m, lily lolo, m & s......quite a few to choose from but if in doubt, always look for the leaping bunny symbol on the packaging as it will be BUAV approved.
