The lifestyle does seem souch better, however I would stay legal-ish.

Am I being crazy to consider selling my home (will end up with 200k ish) to buy 20 acres for 100k and some kind of legal home on wheeles that I don't need planning permission for and can just move if council get assy.

Only thing that puts me off is not having a washing machine - guess I could get planning permission to a shed and most have water mains so getting some power should be somehow possible.

I could put up a yurt with a wood burner also as is temp so wouldn't need to demolish anything.

Am I being genious or crazy?

Crazy.

londonrach · 29/05/2015 08:41

Why? Pil built their house (proper brick one with planning permission) and it was hell. Ive never been so cold. you wouldnt believe the mud and where it gets. Kevin on grand designs romanticises it and thats brick. I cant image a yurt. If keen suggest you hire a yurt for a weekend on a rainy day in winter. If still keen its right for you. I know you can do yurt holidays. A friend staying in a gyspy caravan at the moment which looks amazing in the sun. Try before you buy op xxx

I think you may need to really really think this through from all angles.

However life is bloody short. Sometimes you just have to do what takes your fancy. Grin

FarFromAnyRoad · 29/05/2015 08:44

Do it. What could possibly go wrong?

Dowser · 29/05/2015 08:50

What about a static caravan. I would want proper plumbing in place though.

pettywitchinlondon · 29/05/2015 08:52

Rach why is there's so cold? Most modern builds are passive homes and easy to be toasty. I currently live in a 1930s and it can be cold however I only heat it by wood burner and the lounge is baking and the rest of the home nice if I have time for a fire in the morning and night.

I guess the mud would get annoying, I'd try to get paths and things to stop this.

I'd buy a cube type house with a proper kitchen and toilet / shower so it would be warm and insulated.

Yurt would just be for when the weather is nicer.

G'waaaaan do it! And keep us updated on your progress via real time thread please.

londonrach · 29/05/2015 08:58

Petty ...because they lived on site during the the coldest winter for years whilst it was being built. The house was open to the elements till the march i think. I try not to think of it as honestly it was hell. The house looks amazing now (like something in a magazine) but it wasnt worth it. It has had a major effect on mil health even 4 years later and have taken 4 years to recover from the stress. I do think a holiday in winter whilst its raining in a yurt is worth doing. It might it right for you. Try before you buy.

londonrach · 29/05/2015 09:00

Id love a 1930s house. Its my ideal house. We still renting. One day will buy.

pettywitchinlondon · 29/05/2015 09:01

uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/thinking-inside-the-box-10-000-cube-home-takes-just-four-hours-to-build-163432219.html

I'm so tempted. Not sure if its just due to relationship breakdown, hitting 40 or getting pissed off with noisy neighbours.

Would save 1.5k a year in council tax too

Ah I understand rach, I'm only thinking about a prefab so at most will be a day or twos building work. The mud I guess I could overcome by putting down gravel and I love traveling so could quite happily go for 3-4 months evey year in Asia or south america.

Just need to find away for my spare cash to work for me to provide an income.

OP posts:
londonrach · 29/05/2015 09:12

Try before you buy.. yurt-holidays.com By the way if you do go ahead you have to update and show us all photos. Its so much better from a distance than being knee deep in mud x

canweseethebunnies · 29/05/2015 09:27

Genius. Do it! Why the hell not? And write a blog.

pettywitchinlondon · 29/05/2015 12:04

Cheers each will have a look.

The final "home" I'm hoping will be warmer than my 1930s home.

I'm maybe thinking about just buying an acre for 10k to try, less bang for your buck but less money tied up.

If you do buy land check you have access to it properly.

Not bitter experience at all. Oh no.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 29/05/2015 12:15

Be very careful not to buy land in the green belt. There the Council will take action against you the minute you do something permanent (i.e. putting down hardstanding). Look at how travellers are treated if you have any doubts - Councils can be vicious about that sort of unauthorised development.

pettywitchinlondon · 29/05/2015 13:08

Oh madam I want to hear this?!

Yep I'm avoiding green belt and aonb. Although wish it was easy to see what is green belt land. Some of the people on that show had huge places that they were in for years, mine will be small and will be a grey area legally, they were all illegal. Wonder what it would take for them to allow me to be classified as a gypsy.

Lots have water mains so that's not a problem. The cube has solar panels.

Will have a mobile signal, I can deal with that and go somewhere else to download videos.

OP posts:
pettywitchinlondon · 29/05/2015 13:10

Ah I've found green belt. As I'm not going to be near a major city looks like I'm fine in Dorset!

TheCrowFromBelow · 29/05/2015 14:34

But even if you have mains water connected to the field you won't have drainage. What will you do with the sewage?

BMW6 · 29/05/2015 14:44

I was wondering about sewage too...........surely if you have connection to mains drains and water you are no longer mobile Confused

pettywitchinlondon · 29/05/2015 14:52

Composting toilet.

Planning on joining the gym to use their showers mostly.

Still can't see any holes in my plan Grin
