Is there a source for this statistic?

AnyoneForTennis · 28/05/2015 22:18

Die of what?

PattiODoors · 28/05/2015 22:19

The working conditions there are appearing to be pretty awful.

QueenBean · 28/05/2015 22:19

Do you have a source for this?

There have been several press articles about it. It's pretty accurate. It's construction industry in a developing country. H&S standards are almost non existent. Lots of people in this country die in the industry still

funnyossity · 28/05/2015 22:23

I heard on BBC radio today a quote about 2 deaths per day on building sites in Qatar. (Not sure if it was only World Cup related or overall? Either way it's a serious issue surely?)

AnyoneForTennis · 28/05/2015 22:23

What are thereby of Qatars working conditions like compared then?

SurlyCue · 28/05/2015 22:28

Link?

moanybollocks · 28/05/2015 22:29

A pretty shocking story and graph here www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/05/27/a-body-count-in-qatar-illustrates-the-consequences-of-fifa-corruption/

someone is dying every two days

PattiODoors · 28/05/2015 22:30

bbc article, Feb 2015

MoreBeta · 28/05/2015 22:31

Working conditions are no worse in Qatar than in most countries outside the OECD. Its a worldwide issue. Most of the goods we buy have either been made in or have raw materials sourced from Developing countries with very poor health and safety records.

The gravel on my drive came from a quarry in India. Pretty much all our clothes, much of our food and many household goods even our children's toys are made in factories which would not meet EU health and safety standards.... yet we all like a bargain!

katienana · 28/05/2015 22:33

same as in dubai a shocking number of "workers" who have had their passports removed die to construct those skyscrapers. the Olympics in 2012 was I think the first fatality free build.

AnyoneForTennis · 28/05/2015 22:35

Don't spoil it morebeta you know MNers love the chance to blame football for everything they can!

Charis1 · 28/05/2015 22:36

what are you talking about. Who will die, how?

Mopmay · 28/05/2015 22:40

Katiemana you are correct - the 2012 Olympic build was unique in that no workers were killed in the construction of the park and facilities. The pp post who pointed out that very many of our goods are made in hell holes in developing countries is also correct. It's cheaper to make abroad due to low wages and appalling worker conditions ....

Sunsoo · 28/05/2015 22:42

FIFA need to take a stand here. If one big company kicks up a fuss, then everyone else will follow.

Happybodybunny12 · 28/05/2015 22:42

Anyone huge huge family of football fans.

Links above and source BBC.

Euphemia yes dear the spelling is the issue here of course.

Charis the immigrant workers constructing the stands.

Yes Katie agree and also agree Mop

Behooven · 28/05/2015 22:45

There is exactly zero chance of FIFA doing anything about it. Their corruption is why the World Cup is being held in Qatar

Roseotto · 28/05/2015 23:16

FIFA need to take a stand? Did you miss something - the fact they've been filling their boots for the past ten years (and are responsible for the corrupt award of the World Cup to Qatar in the first place) for starters?

funnyossity · 28/05/2015 23:25

moany thanks for the correction.

It's appalling.

I also regularly rant about the fact I can't buy school trousers for my children that aren't made in a Bangladeshi sweatshop (where the management have likely locked the bloody doors.)

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 28/05/2015 23:30

Yes I think in a ideal world the organisation should be setting standards around the things that go along with hosting one of these types of events. Just because shit happens doesn't mean that an organisation which could impose higher standards shouldn't bother.

OP that is a shocking stat and I hadn't heard it before and absolutely an event with such a lot of money behind it and with the world watching / participating and the huge prestige and income from hosting it, the body who choose where it goes should be saying these are the terms under which you get this special thing.

But yes they're all corrupt so same old it's all fucked really.

uglyswan · 29/05/2015 14:07

MoreBeta - I won't argue with your point about incredibly dangerous working conditions around the world. But the conditions in Qatar are exacerbated by the legal system, especially the so-called kafala, which ties work permits for migrant workers to a single employer. This is not just a case of labour laws failing to protect workers, it's government collusion in the exploitation of migrant workers.
