To think this is something dodgy?

I was just asked to take in a parcel for a neighbour. I had to sign for it. Label on top states it is from a reasonably local clothing company. I assumed clothes for their kids or something. Box is massive (like 3ft high) and was partially open at the top. Thought nothing of it as we are both in random hours and often take in parcels for each other.

Neighbour comes home and is puzzled. She opens box and it is.... a huge ugly floral lampshade. Second hand at that as it has light bulb burn type marks inside it. Packed badly hence box totally collapsed at the top.

Not something she ordered. Not something she wants in her house. Closer inspection shows only courier labels which state a clothing company as the sender. There is NO name on it (I hadn't noticed that at first, it was wet and I thought the delivery was mine...) no delivery note, no personal note NOTHING.

Has anyone heard of this? Could it be someone has sent a "fake" parcel and there was something dodgy inside it which courier has removed? Just using a random address on the route of a known accomplice?

Dh thinks its hlarious I'm bothered because it's been signed for by me and they asked for my surname. Thinking maybe just take some pics of the box/label and make a note of day/time of delivery just in case anyone asks?

Neighbour is going to call the company but I very very much doubt they sent it.

Oooh ... Does sound a bit suspicious!... You say it had no name on it but that the courier said it was for your neighbour... Did the courier say your neighbour's name? And what exactly did you sign? A paper or one of those machines? I'd be inclined to contact the sender and find out who exactly they are. Careful with what info you give them though til you're sure!

CatsCantTwerk · 27/05/2015 16:30

Can you type the tracking number in the courier website? It should say where it was collected from and who sent it.

CatsCantTwerk · 27/05/2015 16:31

Or call the courier office and they will be able to tell you the sender.

FujimotosElixir · 27/05/2015 16:36

this is wierd ! i second calling the courier office

YsabellStoHelit · 27/05/2015 16:39

They just said parcel for next door. Was a legit company with legit van and I signed a machine.

If there's no name or address, could it be for a different neighbour than the one you first thought?

Plexie · 27/05/2015 16:47

Does the packing look pristine or has it been reused? If the latter might it be something that's been bought off Ebay but sent to the wrong address? Ebay sellers often reuse packaging and don't enclose a note - you just get the item in an envelope etc.

Aermingers · 27/05/2015 16:56

I suspect it's an EBay thing gone to the wrong house too. You're massively overthinking it. If the courier was waiting for something dodgy in a packet he would just have faked a sig and dumped the stuff. Your neighbour wasn't waiting for anything, so she would have been none the wiser.

The only other thing I can think of is if somebody is trying to find out who lives next door.

When I first moved into my house the previous occupants former partner had form for trying to kidnap their daughter and take her overseas. He tried a few rouses to try and find out if they still lived here. Could be something similar?

LilQueenie · 27/05/2015 17:08

sounds like an ebay parcel reusing old packaging. possibly the seller mixed up address and items.

PeppermintCrayon · 28/05/2015 09:09

It's nice of you to take parcels in but you should refuse if they're wet and partly open in case the item is damaged.
