to consider giving up secure tenancy for extra bedroom & garden [title edited by MNHQ at OP's request]

I have name changed for this, only as details are very much likely to out me.

I live in a 2 bedroom flat. There are 5 of us, and we fit here when we moved. I was pregnant, and dc3 slept in our room when born, & dc1 & dc2 shared the box room (they fit in nicely, with space left)

Fast forward a few years. My dh & I are sleeping in the lounge, dc1 now has the box room to themselves, and dc2 & dc3 share the slightly bigger room.

Now, I am desperate to move. I want a garden, and our own bedroom back. However, our rent is reasonably cheap (we would be looking at an extra £200 / £300 per month if moved) the flat its self is lovely ( and the flat building only has 2 flats, so is us & our downstairs neighbours only - its not a big block IYSWIM?) And our tenancy is as secure as it could be (rent from a family member)

So, AIBU? To move just for the garden / extra bedroom? What would you do in this situation?

Perhaps my title should have been 'to give up a secure tenancy for an extra bedroom & a garden' Grin

Anyway I can change that?

Tis why we moved, I'm reminded of what a good idea it was every single time the DC play out in said garden.

It's nice to have a garden, but if DH and I had to sleep in the living room, my main reason for wanting to move would be to get an extra bedroom for us.

Your current sleeping arrangements may work now, but I think it's likely to get more awkward as your DC get older.

So I'd move now (if affordable) - get the extra bedroom, plus the garden while the DC are still young enough to get lots of use out of it.

We love our garden. The children play outside in it whenever they can and I think it's great for them. They are out all seasons in wet gear if necessary digging, playing ball or just running about. If it doesn't cause you financial hardship then definitely move for an extra bedroom and some outdoor space.

So mainly votes for move, with a few stay and save up to move thrown in.

Obviously, the black and white answer is to move. Of course. Extra bedroom, garden for the dc, bit more room with it.
Its just the extra money, and the security that worries me. and of course the rip off estate agents fees If it wasn't for that, I'd be packing to move now!

Why don't you go and view a couple of properties and get the feel of them, might help you decide if it's worth the extra cash! x

Do your downstairs neighbours have a garden? Do they have the same landlord?

UnoUno · 27/05/2015 14:18

Not a bad idea Pippa12

No, downstairs doesn't have a garden either.
