It's not that bad and once you've had it that tooth will never hurt again.

The one I had done was third from the back too. I'm considering having it pulled because three months after a very expensive root canal and filling, the back of the tooth broke off. I had it patched up and then a couple of months ago (about two years later) most of the front broke off. I'm left with about 20% of the original tooth above the gum and he wants to do a crown but I'm sick to the back teeth (pun very much intended!) of the hassle I'm getting from it.

I had 2 done last year. I was dreading it but apart from jaw ache from keeping my mouth open for so long it really was fine. My dentist is absolutely meticulous about enduring I have good pain relief which I think is what made the difference! I actually fell asleep at one point and he shouted "VELVET!!!! Oh my god! I thought you'd fainted!" I actually dozed off, it was a nice bit of me time!!

I was terrified when I was told I needed Root canal treatment because I had heard so many horror stories. I even considered having the tooth out instead but my Dentist was shocked I would do that instead.
I had a bit of an infection that I had to take antibiotics for a week or so before and then had the root canal done.
I was shocked how easy and painless it was. I would never be scared of it again but having said that - mine was straight forward and I have been told it can be worse if you have an abscess or if it is on a tooth with large roots.
I think though that fear always makes you imagine pain is worse.

It was nothing compared to the agonising pain I had from the infected root. I had never known pain like it and couldn't wait to get it dealt with. The experience wasn't too bad. My dentist also has a TV fixed to the ceiling with subtitles turned on so it was a distraction. He also has a jukebox. No wonder it is so expensive....
The cost wasn't funny. You will need a crown a few months afterwards, as the tooth is weakened from having the nerve supply removed.
