'So'

I'm not sure if this has been happening forever, or if I'm only noticing it (and finding it irritating) now.

When I see/hear people being interviewed on TV or radio they often start answers to questions with 'So,... '

For example.

(Interviewer) 'Tell us about your new show'

(Interviewee) 'So, it's based on a true story..'

I think we could clear the national debt if we put a tax on every utterance of the words 'like', 'so', 'yeah' and 'good'. I'm sure GCHQ would be up to the task of monitoring us all for tax purposes.

If I worked in a coffee shop, I'd be so tempted to say 'Yes, you can' to that question and then just stand there. I might tap my fingers a little and say after a short pause 'Did you mean "May I have a coffee?" '. I expect I would be sacked but it would be worth it.

Gasp0de I may have been known to say "no... but if you ask me nicely I might get it for you", or "don't worry, I'll get it" in my line of work. Usually gets me this face Confused but it makes me feel better!

I pull the kids up on 'can i get' .. I hate it. More than so..! Sounds rude.

Songlark · 27/05/2015 15:59

MermaidAvenue I'm tempted to say "yeah what?" when they say that.

MrsNextDoor · 27/05/2015 16:15

In Australia it's "Look" which sounds really aggressive to me..."Look...I know that you used to sell kids watches...has that stopped?"

I don't like it.

Arrgh I though I wasn't guilty but I think I do it sometimes. For example:

Friend: "I'm off to do [insert something exciting], back in a mo.
When friend returns:
Me: (excitedly) "So, how did it go then?"

Another thing I realise I do sometimes is if the roles were reversed and I replied:
"Welll, the door was hanging off it's hinges and Jo almost peed herself laughing".
No need for the "well" so why I sometimes say it I have no idea.

I've thought of another one!

'Listen' usually said by the interviewer to end the interview.

'Listen Madonna, thanks for coming and good luck with your new album'
