no you don't bring flowing non busy traffic to a standstill to let someone out

This happens a lot where I live. Your behind another car going 30-40, they decide to let a car out so bring themselves and you to a standstill to do so. The other car doesn't react quickly to what is happening so waits a bit longer until they join the traffic. I can understand if its busy or stuck in a q, but all the time it happens where the road is free behind or one more car behind. So if they just carried on they could go after we pass. The only thing it does is delay everyone and waste fuel.

YANBU. As you say, when it's busy it's a nice gesture, but it's pointless and irritating when it's not at all busy.

InnTheJungle · 21/05/2015 18:18

Well if you are doing 40, chances are you are breaking the speed limit anyway, so YABU.

And YABU to be angry about someone being considerate and delaying you for 5 seconds.

PuntasticUsername · 21/05/2015 18:19

YANBU. It's really dangerous.

ChuffinAda · 21/05/2015 18:21

Polite drivers are my pet hate.

I live on a main road with lots of side roads off it. I have to get out before a neighbour because they let every driver off every drive and out every side road and will sit and wait if they spot someone leaving their door heading to the car. It can add ages to my morning commute.

Polite drivers and drivers who are unaware of other road users (yes twat going 30 down a major a road slip road) Hate them both.

ilovesooty · 21/05/2015 18:25

What is the speed limit on the road in question?

LividofLondinium · 21/05/2015 18:26

Oh, and I dislike it when I'm waiting at a junction and I'm invited out when I can clearly see there is bugger all traffic for a long stretch behind the car behind the one that's stopped for me. They clearly don't look in their rear view mirrors.Hmm So instead of being prepared to go after 2 cars I suddenly have to get my arse in gear and go NOW. Of course I always wave a thank you whilst inwardly rolling my eyes but I wish they wouldn't. As I said, wonderful if the traffic is busy, PITA when it's not at all.

BitchPeas · 21/05/2015 18:28

People who do this think they are wonderful drivers ime. Makes me stabby, it's so pointless.

cardibach · 21/05/2015 18:32

In the situation described it isn't being considerate, though Inn. It's breaking the very sensible rules of the road which keep everyone safe and moving. In stationary traffic it is considerate, but not if it is flowing and not busy.

InnTheJungle · 21/05/2015 18:46

"It's breaking the very sensible rules of the road which keep everyone safe and moving"

Which rules would they be?

Welshmaenad · 21/05/2015 18:55

At a stab, the ones in the Hufhwy Code that outline who has right of way?

Welshmaenad · 21/05/2015 18:55

What the fuck?

HIGHWAY code...

SoupDragon · 21/05/2015 18:56

delay everyone

By, I would guess, less than a minute.

Coincidenceschmoincidence · 21/05/2015 18:58

Do you live in cornwall? If not, don't ever move here. Wat you describe is common practice along with giving way on roundabouts where it's your priority.

Dp wore out a car horn within a year of moving here.

Coincidenceschmoincidence · 21/05/2015 18:59

What not wat. As you were.

InnTheJungle · 21/05/2015 18:59

"At a stab, the ones in the Hufhwy Code that outline who has right of way?"

And which ones would those be?

patterkiller · 21/05/2015 19:00

Dh does this as he lived in a city where traffic was slow long queues, we have lived in the countryside for 15 years and he still does it on 60mph single carriage way quiet roads. My eyes jump to the mirror when he slows expecting a car up our arse.

SoupDragon · 21/05/2015 19:02

Dp wore out a car horn within a year of moving here.

I'm guessing he doesn't know the rules about when you are meant to use the horn then :)

Welshmaenad · 21/05/2015 19:02

Given that you have time to be pointlessly PA for no reason, Inn, why don't you scamper off and check for yourself? You could start by looking up what you're meant to do when you come to those funny dashed white lines on a road.

InnTheJungle · 21/05/2015 19:03

"Given that you have time to be pointlessly PA for no reason, Inn, why don't you scamper off and check for yourself? "

I did - and I couldn't find any, that's why I am asking you, I don't believe any such rules exist.

Houseworkavoider · 21/05/2015 19:04

Coincidenceschmoincidence
Totally agree. Dh found this utterly frustrating when we first moved here. I learnt to drive here and am quite used to it. In fact when we go up country, I get nervous because everyone else's driving seems quite aggressive!

BitOutOfPractice · 21/05/2015 19:04

WelshMaenad I think "hufhwy" is the noise the OP makes when someone lets another driver in Wink

I was just about to say it sounded Welsh then I saw your name!

SoupDragon · 21/05/2015 19:15

I can't find anything relevant in the Highway Code either, although I did only skim read.

silverglitterpisser · 21/05/2015 20:05

Makes me barmy as well, OP. Yanbu!

Sidge · 21/05/2015 20:25

Conversely I get cheesed off when crawling or stationary traffic blocks the junction to a side road where you can see cars obviously waiting to pull out.

Why not leave a gap so they can safely pull out instead of stopping across the junction, stopping them from pulling out, despite the fact you're going precisely nowhere?!?

Welshmaenad · 21/05/2015 20:30

You can't find anything about giving way at give way lines?
