Just been for a walk to the shop and then along by the sea towards home.

I bought some shopping, and had opened a large packet of crisps for me and ds3 to share as we were hungry. Bag in the shopping basket under out buggy.

Parked the buggy by the prom and went down to sea with ds3 very briefly, while ds1 near buggy (he is 12). Some people go by him with loads of dogs.
I swap with ds1 who goes down to the sea with toddler while I return to buggy to get something, and I reach into the crisps and find they are rather wet [bleeee]

I realise this was likely a dog - ask ds1 when he returns and he confirms a dog had stuck its face into the crisps.

Am I unreasonable in wanting dog owners to keep their blimming dogs' noses out of other people's pushchairs, shopping, picnics and anything else a dog is liable to try and eat from?

I've had to ditch the whole bag now and I was enjoying those Sad.

YANBU but I still eat things that my dog has licked Grin

Was the dog on a lead?

Pootles2010 · 21/05/2015 12:48

Yuk that is disgusting! Very Envy of you walking by the sea on your way home though! totally misses point

Snozberry · 21/05/2015 12:51

I hate dogs so I am biased on threads like these but yes keep your dogs under control people! I've had similar before with dogs sniffing around the buggy and the owner casually walking by with a chuckle "what is he like". Put it on a fucking lead and keep it to yourself.

chaletdays · 21/05/2015 12:52

YANBU. People should keep their dogs on a proper lead when out in public. Those extendable leads are pointless if some dog owners never bother to retract them.

upduffedandworrying · 21/05/2015 12:54

what about those of us who thoroughly enjoy dogs coming over for a fuss? Genuine dilemma.

OrionsAccessory · 21/05/2015 12:55

Yanbu but my dog would have done that Blush I do my best and we haven't had any accidents with stealing food outside of the house yet but he knows when there's food around loooong before I do so it could well happen one day!

Pootles2010 · 21/05/2015 13:00

Does anyone enjoy their crisps being licked by a dog? DS knows to ask before stroking a dog, same should work other way - owner should check you want to say 'hello'!

OrionsAccessory · 21/05/2015 13:01

Also the dog could well have been on a lead and still managed to get the crisps, the owner wouldn't exactly be looking out for open packets of crisps under other people's pushchairs but the dog most definitely would have smelt them!

upduffedandworrying · 21/05/2015 13:01

I don't enjoy it Pootles, no, but I can't say it bothers me to the extent I'd post on MN about it.

YY to this

SoupDragon · 21/05/2015 13:05

YANBU but your DS is 12. Why didn't he stop the dog snaffling the crisps?

chaletdays · 21/05/2015 13:05

He should have been on a lead short enough for the owner to take action if he started running towards someone's shopping.

How would dog owners like it if I let my dribbling toddler run over and rub his face all over your groceries?

Pispcina · 21/05/2015 13:05

I know in an ideal world the crisps would have been unopened and in a properly organised shopping bag, but I don't really see that it is my responsibility to keep all food wrapped up safely so that no one can access it, particularly if it's in a buggy shopping basket, not left randomly on a bench or something Smile

I was hungry. It was basically my lunch.

Not sure if dogs on leads. There were about four of them all very close round the owner.

It must've been a very restrained dog. If my lab was able to get that close he'd have eaten the lot including packet in the time it took to lick them.

Pispcina · 21/05/2015 13:08

Ds is a bit scared of dogs, so he would probably have flinched away a bit, also he wasn't right next to the buggy, they looked to sort of push in between him and the buggy as they were 'coming through'.

I doubt he could have done anything tbh.

Which probably means dog owner couldn't have either, but not being a dog owner I'm not sure what the protocol is!

If I'd been there I'd have said something.

Snozberry · 21/05/2015 13:09

The owner should be watching what the dog is up to and pulling it back before it has the chance to have it's face underneath a buggy eating someone's food. I don't like them sniffing round my buggy even if there's nothing to be licked.

OrionsAccessory · 21/05/2015 13:10

Of course it isn't your responsibility but accidents happen Confused in an ideal world the dog wouldn't have nicked your crisps but this is real life.

Gottagetmoving · 21/05/2015 13:15

I think you are daft to leave food open under the buggy. Yes dog owners should pull their dogs away from buggies or other peoples stuff but Dogs are curious and want to smell everything, The dog owner wasn't to know you leave opened foodstuffs under the buggy. In fact - it would have attracted the dog.

Pispcina · 21/05/2015 13:15

I think the thing is, if my toddler (who can be unpredictable) went and dribbled all over someone else's picnic, I would be effusively apologising and I would offer to pay, at least.

But because it was a dog I think some owners tend to say 'Oh well, it's an accident, naughty dog,' and you're meant to suck it up in return for the sheer pleasure of sharing your world with dogs.

I think that's what bothers me.

ender I have a lab too and know exactly what you mean, they are such foodies!! Mine can eat a full bowl of dog food in about 30 secs!

OP yes yanbu to be annoyed, the owner should have their dogs under control, whether that be good enough recall to come back at a voice command even when faced with temptation or be on a lead if not. My lab boy is an ex gun dog so his off lead recall is brilliant but I still put him on his lead if we are passing other dogs who may not want to say hello or are somewhere busier than the countryside we normally walk. In your situation, if we were on a prom he would be on his lead, on an empty beach off his lead.

I'm sorry for the loss of your crisps!

RB68 · 21/05/2015 13:18

Open packet of crisps at ground level, prob unseen by owner whether on lead or or not. Personally I keep dogs away from buggies with or without kids in BUT the dog owner may have just noted an interest and pulled them away - it takes a fraction of a second for a dog to lick so they may not have realised they did. I think two things, next time fold up the crisps and leave in a bag if under buggy - its just too much temptation for a dog - they are just animals and it is food. and err don't leave the buggy unattended which is practically what it was if 12 yr old not minding it properly. But as to yuck - yes I agree and I would have been annoyed and ditched them and I am a boisterous dog owner. Dogs are a bit like kids some times they are well behaved and sometimes not - no matter how much you train them. As to toddlers running around wiping grimy hands and faces on people - it does happen and they are forgiven well unless its silk.... and yes you apologise and feel guilt - so do most dog owners if their dogs are naughty.

upduffedandworrying · 21/05/2015 13:23

I work in central London and in school hols you can't bloody move for children running around, falling on top of you, walking very slowly down the street in front of you, riding their scooters into your ankles and generally being a PITA and all you get are benign smiles from doting parents as in 'ahhh bless'.

I remember a post on here once where someone was talking about this and she got absolutely flamed for being horrible about poor wickle children.

Similar situations with dog owners I know but there seems to be a lot of loathing for dogs on MN and I don't quite know why.

upduffedandworrying · 21/05/2015 13:25

off tangent there, sorry OP. Gist was no, YWNBU but everyone please stop hating on dogs :(

Gottagetmoving · 21/05/2015 13:33

upduffedandworrying

There is nothing wrong with Dogs - or children,..but there is plenty wrong with some adults/parents/dog owners.

Pispcina · 21/05/2015 13:48

Thanks all - I appreciate the virtual apology!! Smile

I think it was just the feeling of 'Oh. Well I can't have these now, there's nothing I can do about it, and no one cares' that made me post...not a dog hater, but yes some owners drive me insane!

Some however are wonderful of course. I will make sure never to leave anything edible unwrapped in future as there are a LOT of dogs round here. And I think it would be wise.
