Some changes to housing benefit to stop it pushing up all rents would be good.

Also I'd like to see some kind of land tax to replace council tax. Then all the overseas people that buy properties to leave empty would be hit. Also this could hit buy to letters and remove some of the unfair tax breaks that encourage it.

What would you like to see?

that sounds like workhouses seriously do you know what life was like in them? Confused

I do agree with lower corporation tax rates as it makes the UK really competitive for global businesses locating here

It's bloody depressing that our country is reduced to becoming a tax haven.

Of course hb increases rent. It increases the demand for housing, therefore what it costs.

in fact there are studies showing that rent for HB tenants went up faster than rents for people who don't get HB. it is simple supply and demand.

I feel for people as rents are ludicrous in London, but I don't think HB is the answer, and I also don't think people have a right to live in central London (if so, I'd like to know how to get it). the answer is to increase supply.

Rents soared astronomically under Labour when they happily paid whatever London LL asked without question - sometimes many thousands a month.

It isn't, so you can strike that off your worry list.

I certainly wasnt suggesting that anyone would be forced to live there! As I said, I just saw a program about people in London having to pay extortionate rent for a tiny room in frankly appalling conditions of damp and decay, one house had an actual literal open sewer running actually under the floor! It seems crueller to me that as a society we say "either you live here and pay for it, or you spend years in an overcrowded b&b hoping a council place comes up".
I just wondered if it might be an option like a kind of youth hostel thing, where its a more caring setup to give people some support while a place comes up or they work towards a better-paying job so they dont need it any more.

And yes, I would much rather have that as an option than a slum house room costing me half my wages.
