To want to get rid of extractor hood

Sorry for dull thread and not really an AIBU subject but looking for advice.

We have a Smeg extractor hood connected to an outside wall. I don't think it's ever worked properly and no matter how often I clean it or change the filter, it stinks!
Cooking smells don't seem to be sucked away, rather they just collect and sit on the removable lid (which regularly goes through dishwasher).

It's gross, you can smell it as soon as you walk in the kitchen. We've checked everything is connected properly and no holes in the extractor tunnel thingy (!!) so I'm flummoxed. I think the kitchen would be less smelly if I just got rid of the thing.

Any ideas?

There might be an "in or out" switch inside that is set to "inside". It's not unlike the fan in your car that sucks air in or just circulates it only this sucks air out. Does that make sense? On our extractor, if you take it apart as if to replace the filter the the switch is to the right of the fan.

Had a good look inside but can't see a switch

Im trying to get rid of mine.

I remember the days there were no extractor fans and hoods, people just opened the window or something.

I find them extrememly unhygenic as all the stuff collects on lid (removeable or not) and its awful to get off.

Plus in last place we lived at (private landlord) he wouldnt remove it and there were flies getting into it through the vent outside and I had to move the cooker (thankfully an electric moveable one) along as I could envisage droppings and stuff from them! ewww.
