Leg pain that becomes agonizing when it rains(?)

What is it?

It's mainly knees (and hands in fact).

I was having trouble walking normally yesterday and then it kept me awake.

Is this something that happens in mid-life? Is everyone popping pills and quietly flinching?

Or is it GP-worthy? )Not sure I can face the krypton factor style procedure to secure an appt)

Oh shit this AIBU. I meant to post in chat.

Ok then; "AIBU to wonder what this sodding leg pain is all about?" Smile

I get sore knees but I'm sure its connected to my weight and if your hands are sore that obviously isn't your issue.
No one should have to endure unexplained pain. Please give your docs a ring and get an appointment. I think its only krypton factor if you want to be seen urgently.

Arsenic · 20/05/2015 13:25

It's all 'phone on the day between x and ten past x'. They won't book ahead

I have gained weight recently, but as you say, it's the hands too Hmm

Is there an open/ walk in type clinic at any time?

MaxPepsi · 20/05/2015 13:36

I have rheumatism, had since it a baby - or so the GP diagnosed.

I can always tell when it's going to rain, my joints absolutely bloody kill sometimes.

Could it be that?

Arsenic · 20/05/2015 13:41

Hmm. I've had manageable aches for eons.

I was saying to DH last night that I can remember saying to adults when I was a young teen that I knew when rain was coming because my knee-ache started.

Maybe it is time to see someone.

I might change GPs actually.

Thanks chaps Smile

Rheumatism was my first thought as well.

sadwidow28 · 20/05/2015 13:42

I am suggesting the same as Maxpepsi. I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was 17 yrs old and I know exactly when it is about to rain. Knees feel like they have gravel in them; my neck 'burns' at the top of my spine and fingers don't like to work properly.

Get it checked out. There is good medication for rheumatism that will alleviate the pain.

Arsenic · 20/05/2015 13:46

So the rain thing is a recognised phenomenon? Nice to know I'm not being weird/going mad Grin

So glad I read this. I have pain intermittently in my right hip whenever there is cold damp weather. I was told years ago it was rheumatic pain.

Osteo or Rheumatoid Arthritis??

You need to get it checked out, there is a lot of helpful advice and medication out there.

Just a thought but do you wear different footwear when it rains that might be exacerbating the problem?

Timeforabiscuit · 20/05/2015 16:42

I had this agonising knee pain, especially in cold damp weather - I was mid twenties at the time so didn't go to the doctors but had some reiki therapy.

Its a bit woo (and I am not a woo person, a friend of a friend suggested it) but it worked, had no pain until I had kids and now a bit of a twinge but nothing so bad for me to actually sort out iyswim.

Arsenic · 20/05/2015 16:46

Butter you should be on the stage Grin

Serin even before I've got dressed or left the house, it is worse on wet weather days. Much worse.

Thanks Time. Worth a try.

I did some cautious googling and it seems joint pain (of any cause) can get worse in the rainy weather because of the drop in atmospheric pressure, which makes fluid in the joints expand.

So that explains that, at least.

Barometer knees are very common.

OPtions include

  • raynauds
  • arthritis
  • gout
  • being overweight putting joints under strain (for me 5lb is the figure I have to stay within)
Arsenic · 20/05/2015 22:38

Smile @ 'barometer knees'.

I doubt it's 1, 3 or 4.

Hmm

I've had this since I was very young. It's a bone gnawing ache in my case, either elbow to hand or knee to foot. DM has always had the exact same too...nobody ever seems to recognise it though when I've described it. It really feels like it's the actual bone.

MajesticWhine · 20/05/2015 22:49

I have joint pain in bad weather, mainly the fingers but also the elbow and other joints. It's been bad the last few weeks. DM's the same. Once when it was bad I got the test for rheumatoid arthritis and it was negative, but I understand it is a fairly unreliable test with both false positives and false negatives.

Arsenic · 20/05/2015 23:00

Maybe it's just middle age exarcebating things then.

I get this in fingers and toes, mild pain but stiff and drop stuff!

snowglobemouse · 21/05/2015 02:39

I get awful headaches when the pressure changes. not woo I swear!

Coyoacan · 21/05/2015 04:42

Would aspirin help? And the other one is magnesium chloride, I have been told it is very good for sore joints.
