To not quite trust what the Dr is telling me?

DS2 (5) and DH started being sick on Sunday. DH recovered quickly and is now fine. DS though was sick lots that day and into the night. He stopped being sick around midnight. However he has almost continuously been complaining of pain or actually in tears. He's been on calpol four hourly and occasionally ibruprofen too when he's been hot/in pain.

He wasn't sick at all Monday but was very distressed. Today he was still in a lot of pain and then he was sick again several times. I phoned 111 and they advised to get him seen the same day by the GP.

I took him and the Dr looked him over and announced it was viral and he'll recover in a few days. He thought he might be a bit dehydrated so prescribed the rehydration sachets. Advised that DS continues to eat/drink as he feels fit to and to continue with painkillers.

I said that I have been giving him calpol but it doesn't seem to help and the Dr sort of brushed me off and said just to continue that. Also I've been getting him to drink but the Dr thinks he's dehydrated. I can't make him drink more than he already is and now he's being sick again he's losing more fluids still. I tried rehydration drink but he won't drink it, he says it's horrible.

I'm just not sure if I am panicing over nothing or if I should take him back again. I've three DCs and have dealt with this before but this time seems different. He just seems so unwell and I can't seem to help him. I don't know what I expect the Dr to do, can they give him better pain relief than calpol?

Thanks if you've got this far. I'm just so very worried.

You say he is in a lot of pain Where is the pain? Does the calpol stop the pain?

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/05/2015 20:24

where is the pain? tummy/throat?

maybe he has pulled a muscle or hurt his throat with all the vomiting?

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/05/2015 20:24

or maybe its a headache because he's dehydrated?

Allinson2014 · 19/05/2015 20:25

Sorry. The pain is in his stomach. It is there all the time, increasing until he's sick and then easing but there all the time. Enough to make him cry.

Allinson2014 · 19/05/2015 20:27

No the calpol doesn't seem to help at all really, he's distressed all day. He's had a temperature and it does bring that down but it doesn't seem to help his stomach ache.

If he is coherent/'with it', makes sense when he's talking and knows whats going on round him, can smile at a fun TV show, is not running a fever, and is not too drowsy, then it probably IS 'just a virus' and nothing more. But any sign of him getting worse, do ring NHS for further advice.

londonrach · 19/05/2015 20:27

Poor lad. Re the liquid anything is better than nothing. Would he keep flat lemonade down. Cant help you with anything else but i think i might be asking for second gp. Wheres the pain.

ChuffinAda · 19/05/2015 20:27

Where's the pain? Could he have appendicitis that's coincided with your husbands bug?

IAmAShitHotLawyer · 19/05/2015 20:28

in all likelihood its just a nasty virus like the GP said.

No point giving any pain relief at all if he's being sick so don't know what he could have that's better than calpol anyway.

Hope he feels better soon.

VivienScott · 19/05/2015 20:29

Take him to A&E, happened to my sister once, she'd had a stomach bug, thought her son had the same. She did have a stomach bug, he had appendisitis. I may well be over reacting, but it doesn't always present as right sided pain and it really is better to be safe than sorry.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/05/2015 20:29

did DH have the stomach pains when he was ill? it is most likely they both have the same thing and DS is just taking longer to get over it.

Is there anything they ate that you did not? could it be food poisoning?

jalopy · 19/05/2015 20:29

Give him frozen ice lollies/ice-pops. It will help to rehydrate him and be a nice distraction too.

Allinson2014 · 19/05/2015 20:29

I forgot to say, sorry, he's hardly weeing. I think he had one wee today. I told the Dr this but he just said up his fluids. He is sipping water continuously, I don't know how to get more into him.

TigerWhoCameForGin · 19/05/2015 20:31

The rehydration drink is grim, but it will help of you can get him to drink it. My patients say the blackcurrant flavour in summer fruits squash makes it OK.

Is he sleeping at night?

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/05/2015 20:31

if he's been dehydrated, he might also have a UTI on top of the sickness bug ?

VivienScott · 19/05/2015 20:32

You can sometimes test for appendicitis yourself by watching where his stomach clenches if you touch it. One sign is that where ever you touch it the muscles on the right hand side over the appendix will clench or guard. And with my sister it was that sense this wass different to a stomach bug.

VivienScott · 19/05/2015 20:33

The weeing thing was the other thing with my sisters son. Please take him to A&E, even if it's not appendix, he is seriously dehydrated by the sound of it.

TigerWhoCameForGin · 19/05/2015 20:34

In light of the lack of wee, take him to A&E. GPs are not infallible.

Kids dehydrate really fast, and that lack of wee could impact his kidneys.

EugenesAxe · 19/05/2015 20:35

If your husband's been sick too it's likely to be the same bug. If it was isolated sickness with pain then there might be more to worry about. The pain isn't anywhere I'd worry loads about - appendix is obviously the main one in that area but the tummy is often inflamed/firm to touch if that's the case, and perhaps doctor ruled that out looking at him.

I don't know - tummy aches do hurt a bit; unless could it be something they ate? Gastroenteritis is lots more painful... not sure what they can do for that. I'd probably put salts in juice and try again to get him to drink them. They tend to help flush bugs when I've used them.

Hope all gets better soon x

crazykat · 19/05/2015 20:35

If he's started being sick again it may be that he's not fought the original bug off yet and that would explain why he's still been in pain. Dh, the dcs and I have all come down with a sickness bug at the same time and ds1 and dd have bounced back within a day, dh and I have been okay after two days apart from sort throat and stomach muscles while poor ds2 was really ill for over a week.

I would do as the gp suggested and keep up with the pain meds , at his age they won't give anything stronger. As other in the house have had a sickness bug I wouldn't be overly worried as it's most likely that he's just having a harder time fighting it off. Keep pushing fluids, those rehydration sachets are vile and made me sick again from trying to drink them. Ice lollies, caused ice and flat coke and lucozade sport are usually good when my dcs have these kinds of virus.

If the pain is localised to the right side of the stomach I'd be more likely to get a second opinion just incase.

TigerWhoCameForGin · 19/05/2015 20:36

Not 'impact his kidneys' But 'have an impact on his kidney function'. Sorry, typing too fast!

Allinson2014 · 19/05/2015 20:43

Thanks everyone. He's asleep. It's rare that he's slept since Sunday so assuming he's ok tonight I'm going to see how he is in the morning. I have a baby that I'm still BF in the night so it makes a bit of a dilemma for am very concerned about his lack of weeing. What would you do, would you go back to the gp? Or go to a&e?

OP posts:
Allinson2014 · 19/05/2015 20:44

Sorry that was meant to say I'm still BF the baby in the night so it's difficult to know what to do if anything tonight. Easier to wait until the morning as long as he's ok

OP posts:
mamasilla · 19/05/2015 20:45

Trust your instinct and take him back in please!

PurpleDaisies · 19/05/2015 20:47

Could you ring 111 or the out of hours gp service for some proper medical advice?

It sounds like he's dehydrated from the bug and if he's not drinking that isn't going to help.
