Discussing latest episode of GoT, will obviously contain spoliers

AIBU to not understand why there has been such uproar about the rape of Sansa Stark. In the context of all the atrocious stuff that happens in GoT it just didn't strike me as particularly significant - what am I missing?

Is it rape in general that is beyond the pale (if so, why?), or something more about the context?

I think sansa is playing the game of thrones and was well aware what would happen. She and littlefinger are preparing for manipulation to get winterfell back and get rid of the boultons. I dont know about her developing in the books but she is a very strong character, one time Miranda would have scared her bit now she put her nose well out of jointing and shut her up.

I think she'll kill Ramsey, probably in bed when he thinks he's in control and take back winterfell.

The books were so much worse. Most of thr comments I've seen on fb saying about the rape being a bad scene to add have been claiming it's because it's sansa who is now raped. Seems wrong to me that a worse serial rape would be ok of someone unknown but not of a known one.

The outrage is because it's the third (I think, happy to be corrected) time a central female character has been raped in the TV series where they weren't in the book.

Yes. And the stabbing of the pregnant Tulisa in the stomach is another one. I'm starting to feel the writers are enjoying the shock value of throwing in some curveballs a little too much.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 19/05/2015 18:52

Its not exactly the third rape that didnt happen in asoiaf though, ramsay does rape (as well as imprison and abuse in other ways) his wife.

That does happen, his wife just isnt sansa.

Sansa knew very well what marriage to Ramsay meant and she knew she would be expected to submit to sex on her wedding night. I'm far from a rape apologist but I don't really get the outrage over this storyline. Of course Ramsay is a vicious bastard but Sansa knew what would be expected of her and I believe she had the option to refuse the marriage.
None of it is nice and fair but she did make a choice.

Ataraxy · 19/05/2015 20:04

She made a choice to be married, not to be raped.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 19/05/2015 20:14

That's disingenuous as marriage = sex on wedding night in that culture so although I'm not saying she gave true and free consent she did agree to it happening.

bigbumtheory · 19/05/2015 22:07

She didn't chose to be raped, she chose to marry a nasty pos who raped and murdered women who were boring or pregnant, he flayed men alive and hunted people who were ripped apart. She knee shed have to shag that and knew he was sadistic. Sansa isn't stupid and she had a way out by lighting the rescue candle. She's playing the cards which will give her winterfell and revenge.

Ultimately rape was always going to happen unless she or theon killed Ramsey- everyone must have known that.

bigbumtheory · 19/05/2015 22:08

By everyone I mean the viewers.

Northernlurker · 19/05/2015 22:19

I thought it was a pretty nasty scene - and it should be. Rape is a terrible crime. We shouldn't ever watch a portrayal of a rape and feel comfortable. What I thought was well bought out was hopw helpless the character must have felt. Watching it you knew there was nothing to be done about it, just was going to happen. Justified in terms of the story? Well........Sansa has been pretty Teflon coated up to now. She's seen all sorts of nasty stuff but evaded it all personally. She's been scared and upset and in fear of falling through the moon door but basically ok. That's not sustainable in Westeros. I think it will be very interesting to see what her reaction is. And I agree actually that what happened to Theon was pretty nasty too.

sashh · 19/05/2015 22:21

The uproar is because it doesn't happen in the books and doesn't seem to be adding anything to the story.

It did happen in the books, it happened to a different character though.

Actually where is Theon's sister now? I remember she set sail to save him after she received his cock. But is she still on her way?

Nope, she turned up, he refused to come out of the kennel/cage and she declared him no longer her brother.

UsedtobeFeckless · 19/05/2015 22:43

It was worse in the book. It just wasn't Sansa it was happening to. I agree with the PPs who pointed out she's playing the game ... Marry vile scumbag and get your hands on Winterfell and the North ( And chuck said vile scumbag to his own horrible hounds, with any luck ... )

I know GoT is strong stuff and bad things happen to good characters - but you can always turn it off!
