'I've been married to my husband (or wife) for 26 years'

Ridiculous?

Of course you're married to your husband. Who else would you be married to?

I hear this a lot and it always annoys me Grin

I also read about someone who married herself (probably in Grazia Blush) (though she did say she wasn't necessarily ruling out marrying someone else later! Committed eh.)

Egg omelette would annoy me.

I do say "wAffle" but only as a joke pronunciation (when accusing family members of waffling on), is that OK?

SistersofPercy · 19/05/2015 23:48

That I can live with cat Grin

When the kids visited she would ask if they wanted waffles and beans and they would just look at her confused. She calls a duvet a 'dove ay'ay' (emphasis on the ay) as well. I think she secretly harbours a desire to be hyacinth bucket Grin

SistersofPercy · 19/05/2015 23:49

There was an extra ay in that Blush
'Dove ay'

MammaTJ · 20/05/2015 06:53

I think I am probably more unreasonable than you OP. I did a YTS, in the years it was running. Loads of people called it the YTS scheme, which is saying the Youth Training Scheme Scheme! Why would people do that?

Totally unnecessary use of an extra word!

NormaStits · 20/05/2015 07:49

Sisters of Percy, how do you pronounce duvet?

OP I don't mind that sentence, I agree it qualifies having been married to the same person, plus it denotes gender though I imagine most straight people aren't using it for that reason.

DontOpenDeadInside · 20/05/2015 08:04

I pronounce duvet Doo-vey

AdeleDazeem · 20/05/2015 10:19

Doo-vey vs Dove-AY

Stress should be on the penultimate vowel. That's true of Spanish anyway I'm sure it's similar for French.

O/T the word 'penultimate' bothers me slightly. What's wrong with 'second last'? And people generally don't use "ultimate' to mean the last or final of something. It doesn't stop there though. There's a word for 'third last', 'fourth last' etc. but they get much less frequent mention.

RoboticSealpup · 20/05/2015 10:19

Not sure... it sounds like a pretty normal choice of words, although the 'husband/wife part is a bit superfluous.

On the other hand, I absolutely hate the phrase 'they both really love each other'. There is no need for the 'both' at all. It just sounds ridiculous.
