AIBU to think that just because your friend doesn't like cats (or dogs) and you have one, it should not effect your friendship as long as they don't go out of their way to show their dislike.

No, I wouldn't break off a friendship if my friend didn't like cats as long as she wasn't horrible to my cat.

I have a friend who always brings his spaniel-sized dog out with him when we meet. We sit outside places.

She's lovely and I don't mind endlessly throwing a tennis ball for her to bring back to me. But I don't want to stroke her because she's little bit doggy-smelling and whenever we meet it's for dinner and I don't want to keep washing my hands. Not that I worry about a health risk, just that the smell of dog on my hands would put me off my dinner just as a whiffy glass puts you off your wine. I can cope with the tennis ball because she's not a dribbler.

He interprets this as me being scared of dogs.

I've just remembered. He lives in Spain. They brought in an indoor smoking ban a few years ago but before then people were far more tolerant of clouds of cigarette smoke than a small dog sitting quietly under the table.

I'm not a smoker btw and we didn't play fetch indoors. That would have been annoying. Wink

I have a cat. I love my cat! I also have friends that don't like cats. If they come to my house then I put the cat in another room, because she does that typical cat thing of making a beeline for someone who dislikes cats and ignoring anyone wanting to interact with her.

I have a friend who openly hates cats. I simply don't discuss my cat with her. I don't think I could be friends with someone who was actually cruel to cats, or any other animals though!

We love our cats that's me,dh, dss and dds. Me and dh now have grand cats we feed when ds and ddil are away.

You are welcome in our house as long as you are not cruel to our cats. A cruel act might result in me or mine punching the crap out of you.

If you don't warm to then that's fine

Sounds like she was generally a bit unhinged.

Im def a crazy cat lady!
However aslong as you don't hurt my cats (or any other of my pets) then i wouldn't stop being your friend.
One of my best friends hates animals in general! She looks at my pics and just says she doesn't understand why people have pets!
She doesn't like the fur or the smell etc we will have a laugh and a joke about it.
She will show me amusing outfits for them.
Each to their own. She doesn't like them. She's not cruel to them, doesn't change her as a person she's still my best friend.
Be boring if we all had the same interests.
If she comes over she doesn't expect me to lock them away. Unless someone is allergic i wouldn't.
It's their house, they come and go as they please.

I wouldn't drop someone as long as they didn't do anything directly to them - shoving one off you would include that. You can gently push, or ask me to take him, but I will do my best to keep them away in they first place. Two are scared of people, but the other will want to just come say hello, then will settle down. He can be quite insistent about this hello, so it's him I'm usually diving on over and over!

But I can't lock them away - mostly because there isn't anywhere. We have an open plan living room/kitchen area. If I locked them in a bedroom they would just sit and scratch the door and the same if they were put outside, as they're mostly indoor cats.

So it does get a little awkward in that way.

At school i had a friend who acted very silly. She would come to my place, point a finger, and shout -- Aaaaargh, YOUR CAT!!! Of course, the kitty, who was peacefully siting and doing nothing, would turn her ears backwards and say psssssssssss

Funny enough, the silly friend grew up to own two hissy cats herself
