I believed up in till earlier today that the ads were awful but my colleague changed my mind.

He argument was that brands will always put a skinny model or beautiful person on their ads.

If that makes you self conscious then so would the skinny and beautiful people in real life.

I don't like the ads but I can't see why that ad caused such uproar when similar ads have been around for ages. I today saw an advert promoting milkshake with a topless man that said 'Aussies suck'.

I think we need to except that people naturally aspire to look a certain way.

This one is giving the message that women should cover up at all times unless their bodies are perfect and mark free.

Yabu, The model lives on a diet of pea protein (apetitite suppressor) and berries

Yes of course. That's exactly how she gets her body. Nothing else. Pea protein and berries. Hmm

Jacobsmum1972 · 19/05/2015 18:00

That's what the article says she is vegan who lives on a diet of pea protein and berries. She runs over the sand dunes everyday on the beach.

Jacobsmum1972 · 19/05/2015 18:00

Oh and let's not forget the Breast implants. Vegan when it's suits.

NRomanoff · 19/05/2015 18:01

If they start banning ads like this, I would like them to ban all adverts with girls with long hair. My hair dresser burnt my scalp, my hair doesn't grow past my shoulders...it makes me feel bad to see a girl with long hair in an advert.

kali110 · 19/05/2015 18:04

This is not a goady thread. really irritates me when posters pick on an op about a nc or because they are new.
We were all new once!
Just because someone doesn't like a thread do people just go nose through their history? No wonder there are namechanges!

NRomanoff · 19/05/2015 18:05

Well if it says it in the article it must be true.

Eating pea protein and berries is different to living on them. She eats them, as do I, she doesn't exist on them.

kali110 · 19/05/2015 18:05

I actually relate to that bio advert. I hate my stretchmarks! I also hate some scars.
It really helped me.

Jacobsmum1972 · 19/05/2015 18:16

It said she exists on berries, salad and tofu.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/05/2015 18:45

Like a vegan might do, Jacobsmum?

agentEgypt · 19/05/2015 18:46

They should be banned as the model is vegan so would never touch the shit they are trying to sell.

fatlazymummy · 19/05/2015 18:50

agent models don't have to use the product they are being paid to promote.

Jacobsmum1972 · 19/05/2015 18:59

Models don't have to use the products.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/05/2015 19:03

On that basis agent, Rimmel adverts should be banned because I'm pretty sure Kate Moss has never used the stuff outside of adverts and photoshoots!

NRomanoff · 19/05/2015 20:05

Jacobs what is you point. She does exist solely on that food. Who wrote the article, her mother? How can they possibly know? But forget that what's your point?

Because to me you are putting her down. She works hard to look the way she does and spouting 'its cause she only eats pea protein and tofu' totally disregards the fact that she puts work in. How is it not ok to not want companies to use her in an advert because we don't want to make people feel bad. But we can claim this girl has an eating disorder and simply forget all the work she puts it? Let's just explain it away with ' she only eats pea protein' it's ridiculous and is a complete double standard.

mynameisvivienne · 19/05/2015 20:34

Well there you go. An overweight vegan is only overweight because they can still eat junk - sugar is not vegan and quite a few crisps are vegan.

Eating a plant based diet is what gets you very lean and being consistent with exercise.

Jacobsmum1972 · 19/05/2015 21:21

Because a diet of pea proteins and berries is not achievable for most people. To consist on those foods in my opinion is unhealthy.

I know many vegans who will eat a variety of foods (within a limited amount of foods).

wiltingfast · 19/05/2015 21:45

To me the ad was offensive due to the manner in which the woman was presented. She is not all happy and sexy looking gorgeous on her way to the beach is she? There's no sign of any beach whatsoever. She is not smiling. In fact her face is weirdly expressionless but her mouth is slightly parted. And then she is standing oddly, it is not a natural stance. The whole effect is to strip the woman of her humanity and leave you with this doll instead. She is not engaging with anything or anyone, she is receptive only.

In other words I find it an overly objectifying image, she is presented like a blow up doll as if her only role in life is to get beach ready and be presented for inspection. It is incredibly negative and I think people have reacted instinctively to it.

If she 'd been shown jumping around the beach actively enjoying her body the ad probably wouldn't have raised a murmur.

FarFromAnyRoad · 19/05/2015 21:54

sugar is not vegan

Really?

kali110 · 20/05/2015 01:58

Some sugar is vegan

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 20/05/2015 02:17

Wow. Today I learned that cane sugar is often whitened with charcoal from the bones of cows.

Not sure how one whitens something with charcoal, but then again I'm quite tired right now.

I really hope that's what the vegan sugar posters were on about and it wasn't another 'cream particles in the bloodstream'* moment.

great reply wiltingfast - agree completely

But she doesn't live on these. She may eat pea protein. But she doesn't exist on it. That's my point. You are writing off any hard work she does with the excuse of 'she looks like that because she only eats pea protein.' Because the daily fail says it, it doesn't make it true. But I suppose its easier to say its she looks like that because she is staving herself, than accept she looks like that because she works damn hard for it.

I find most models aren't engaging or smiling, even plus size models. Still doesn't bother me.
