Ab out the price of cherries

In the supermarket with DS (3)

He says "May I have some cherries"

I say yes and pick a punnet up and then clock the price. £7!!! for a small punnet of normal cherries!

Is there a shortage? Have I missed something or AIBU and this is normal and cherries are now only eaten by city bankers and Russian oligarchs?

I very rarely buy cherries for this exact reason. They're not even that nice anyway, certainly not worth the extortionate amount they are. Even when they're in season they're £2 for a tiny punnet that contains about six cherries. Definitely stick with blueberries.

BrianButterfield · 17/05/2015 16:05

I love them. But it's early in the season so my cynical side thinks they're expensive in order to be sold as half-price all the rest of the year...

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 17/05/2015 16:07

$7 a pound here in Texas, still crazy expensive and they're heavy so a pound doesn't last long either Sad

TheGirlFromIpanema · 17/05/2015 16:09

I only discovered a couple of years ago that they grow wild on trees near me and haven't bought any since Grin

Mmmmm to the cherry vodka last summer Wink

I bought a bag of organic Ranier cherries last year; they were expensive, but they're only available for a few weeks a year, so I decided to get them. I ended up paying $18 for a 3 lb. bag! The thing that gets me is that half of a cherry is a stone, that you can't even eat.

RingtheBells · 17/05/2015 16:13

I picked some up in M&S and put them down again. There is a time in the summer when they are not so expensive for about a week or so. Asda do punnets for a pound at some point of the small cherries, well they did the last couple of years, they are quite nice and affordable, not quite on a par with the big M&S ones, but still nice.

Dawndonnaagain · 17/05/2015 16:17

So glad I have a tree!

lunar1 · 17/05/2015 16:24

My cherry tree was £15, had it in 5 years now and looking at it I'm going to have a couple of thousand cherries by the end of next month!

We used to live in Azerbaijan and buy black cherries the size of golf balls in plastic buckets by the side of the road. They cost about 50p for probably a couple of kilos.

blueshoes · 17/05/2015 17:49

Cherries are expensive, whatever the season but particularly out of season. I worked that our pdq when I first arrived in UK 15 years ago.

Shame as I love cherries.

whois · 17/05/2015 18:37

Out of season, but they are still expensive in English cherry season.

Jux · 17/05/2015 22:05

Allinson, do you not net the trees then? My aunt has cherry trees, damsons, all sorts. They're all netted.

TheMaw · 17/05/2015 22:11

I bought a punnet in Asda for £1.50 today. Waitrose wanted £4, no chance.

misscarlar · 18/05/2015 10:24

i only ever buy them in season from the market so much cheaper

Germgirl · 18/05/2015 10:33

I know it's not the same but I bought some frozen cherries from Sainsburys yesterday, £2.50 a bag. They're bloody lovely!
I'm drinking mine in smoothies at the moment as I'm not allowed solid food, but ill be eating them once I'm allowed.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 18/05/2015 10:45

They are still expensive where I am in the south of Italy and we export them north. Not full season for about another 3 weeks.

SomeSortOfDeliciousBiscuit · 18/05/2015 10:53

I'm another one who'll only buy cherries from M&S because I can guarantee they'll be nice. I discovered cherry trees near my house, on a piece of grassland in-between a small dual carriageway and easily accessible thanks to a crossing. I've gone out in the evening with a step ladder for the past two years and got loads. Grin

Like PP I was going to mention Picota cherries - they're always more reasonably priced but blink and you'll miss them, they only appear for about a week in our shops and then they're done. In a peculiar way, I quite like the reminder that they're seasonal fruit and it makes me appreciate them the way I did when I was a child. I'm old enough that I remember when strawberries were only available for a few weeks in the summer, and we were so excited to get them for pudding. My DC, on the other hand, are so blasé about strawbs because they're in the supermarkets all year round (although only the ones in season taste like proper strawberries, IMO.)
